Did they do their own singing in Falling for Figaro?

Of course Max and Millie do not stay enemies in “Falling for Figaro,” and that reveal should not be a spoiler of any kind. Instead, the film benefits from the ensemble’s steady, committed performances and director Lewin’s well-staged singing scenes.

Does Danielle Macdonald actually sing in Falling for Figaro?

Despite not doing the actual singing in the film, Danielle Macdonald and Hugh Skinner needed much training for their roles. They had to learn the songs and take voice lessons, so that it could be dubbed easily. Macdonald spoke of how terrifying it was for her to simply sing badly and not worry about how she sounded.

The Tourist’s Danielle Macdonald ‘I love roles where weight isn’t mentioned

interview

Harry and Jack Williams’ dramas are reliably disturbing affairs, whether it’s Angela Black’s domestic abuse, the grievous loss of a child in The Missing, or the serial killer thriller Reversal of Rellik. Her latest film The Tourist is perhaps the most disturbing of all, sending Jamie Dornan’s nameless protagonist into the Australian outback, where he loses his memory after being run off the road by an oil truck.

The man must reassemble his identity with the help of a local barmaid (Line of Duty’s Shalom Brune-Franklin) and a new cop (Danielle Macdonald) against the vast, unforgiving environment; It was not for nothing that Wolf Creek was shot nearby.

So thank goodness for Danielle Macdonald, who’s as down-to-earth as her character, Helen Chambers, a green but enthusiastic probationary cop and ex-traffic cop who seems determined to see The Man through his ordeal by showing good cheer and can- make wits, crack bad jokes, lend him money and be visibly thrilled when he succeeds in making an early breakthrough.

Macdonald went from lockdown in Los Angeles to the vast, Covid-free lands of South Australia for over two weeks: a bewildering experience.

“There were two pubs in the town where we lived and that was it,” she says. “Everyone first met at the pool table. Jamie’s a damn good player but he’s been very nice and coached me.”

Helen is perhaps the least enigmatic and ambiguous element of The Tourist, the only person seemingly without side or mystery, and evokes Fargo’s Marge Gunderson as a good person trying to do a good job in a bad world. Although, as Macdonald reminds me of Zoom from London (an Australian expat in LA since 2009, staying with Brune-Franklin during the promotional tour), Helen is trying to do a good job that she has just started.

“She’s been a cop for a week so she hasn’t found her footing and doesn’t quite trust her instincts. It’s really interesting to see her grow and find inner strength throughout the series, especially as she’s someone who doesn’t really fit into a world that other people fit into.”

A counterbalance to the work is her engagement to the reliable Ethan (Greg Larsen); Both attend the “Trim Team” to lose some weight before the wedding. I ask Macdonald if she prefers to play characters whose size doesn’t matter – are weights in scripts a red flag?

“I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way as long as you’re comfortable with the way it’s being portrayed,” she says with characteristic confidence.

“I love roles where it’s never mentioned because it’s not the main focus of who I am and it’s not brought up most days in my life. But it’s a focus in a lot of scripts because it’s a focus in society and there’s pressure on people. The tourist finds that balance.”

Similarly, she found the 2018 drama Dumplin’, in which she played a die-hard Dolly Parton fan alongside Jennifer Aniston, her mother and former beauty queen, “so cathartic for my 16-year-old in a way I”. She says.

“When you’re that age, you’re so focused on it and you think that’s all, then you grow up and live a little bit and you realize it’s not.”

Macdonald grew up in Sydney, the daughter of an Italian accountant and a Scottish shipping manager. With musicians and writers in the family but no actors, she followed a neighbor to acting classes because they loved “playing sham together,” only to find that it helped her overcome her innate shyness.

“In my first year of performing arts I just didn’t talk to anyone, but I was able to speak and perform when I was in character – it was almost easier than being yourself. I’ve learned to become more confident over time that it empowers me to share more of myself and my story. You own your truth and there is nothing wrong with that.”

Still, moving to LA at just 18 to pursue acting was a risk, not least when the job she had eyed fell through due to visa delays. But Macdonald still went all in despite not knowing anyone.

“I moved in with a girl I met once at a workshop in Australia, I had managers who were new to me, and I was trying to get around LA on public transport, which was a nightmare. But I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I knew the realities of the industry: growing up and not seeing oversized actresses on screen…”

She pauses. “No that’s a lie, there was Hairspray – oh look there’s a movie I can see myself on screen and it’s this really talented singer that I could never be because I don’t sing can! I was aware that jobs were few and far between. But acting has always touched me so much and broadened my horizons. It’s such a tough industry, if you don’t love it, why do it?”

It took a while for the work to flow, but the jobs she landed were memorable: guest spots on hit shows like Glee and Pretty Little Liars, and a role in Rachel Weisz’s directorial debut, a short called The Thief.

It wasn’t until 2016 that she broke through as a rapper wannabe in Patti Cake$, the first of several musical roles for someone “without any musicality whatsoever.”

But Macdonald is nothing but a game. Learning to rap was “one of the most frightening but exciting experiences of my life – it pushed me to a point I never thought I could reach physically or mentally.”

Dumplin’ followed, and with it the chance to duet with Aniston and Parton himself when the latter insisted they sing on the film-inspired album (“I don’t want my character to be a great singer, so that was fine.”) Her singing voice was replaced with that of a true soprano when she played an opera singer opposite Joanna Lumley’s retired diva in “Falling for Figaro,” but “I was just like, ‘Turn it up really loud so no one can hear me, it’s awful.'” She laughs confused. “These musical roles just follow me.”

This was followed by key roles in the lively Netflix series Bird Box, Unbelievable and Easy, while future work includes a project with Fresh Off the Boat creator Nahnatchka Khan and, if Covid-19 and schedules permit, a collaboration with Bo Burnham, an acquaintance of her days in LA, helped him sell Eighth Grade to the studio by filming a few scenes with him. Both offer the mix of characterizations she found in The Tourist, one that she hopes now reflects a more inclusive Hollywood.

“These days you see a lot more people represented, but there is always more to do. The old “it’s what sells” mentality has finally changed because those in power are realizing that there are all kinds of people. As long as we keep moving up, things will change.”

The Tourist begins New Year’s Day at 9pm on BBC One

Danielle Macdonald on the Wild Thrill Ride That Is The Tourist

Danielle Macdonald was so excited when she first read the script for The Tourist that she didn’t care if she got the job. She just had to know how it ended. “I can’t remember the last time I was so excited about a script,” she tells me over Zoom. “I couldn’t put it down.” Having just finished the show myself, I can understand her feelings. From the genius minds of Harry and Jack Williams – the duo behind thrillers like The Missing and Baptiste – The Tourist is an amusing cat-and-mouse hunt that doesn’t let up until its latest shocking revelation comes to light.

Of course, Macdonald got the job — and the plot details she was looking for. “I literally cried when I got the part,” she says from her home in Los Angeles while surrounded by her brood of rescued animals. “It’s been a long time since I cried when I got a part, but I was like, ‘Ah, it feels so good because I’m so excited about it.'” Following is the six-part genre-bending series An Irishman (Jamie Dornan), suffering from amnesia following a horrific car accident, must embark on a deadly journey into the Australian outback to discover his true identity. Along the way, he’ll be joined by a cast of offbeat characters, including the lovable Helen Chambers, played by Macdonald. The actress is perfect as a slightly awkward but lovable probationary officer who conducts her own exploration of self-discovery while embroiled in the mystery man’s troubled affairs. She’s the heartbeat of the show, the one person you keep cheering for.
