Paula Abdul spoke to PEOPLE about her experience giving back to her longtime dance teacher and friend on CBS’s Secret Celebrity Renovation
Paula Abdul is all about passing it on — and she doesn’t mind getting dirty in the process.
The 59-year-old is the latest star to roll up her sleeves on the CBS makeover show Secret Celebrity Renovation. Abdul has teamed up with contractors and designers to spruce up the Los Angeles recreation center where she grew up and surprise her childhood dance teacher, Dean Barlow, with a brand new studio.

Ahead of the emotional episode, the Grammy-winning choreographer and choreographer spoke to PEOPLE about how Barlow was a “no-brainer” when it came to deciding who to surprise.
“I knew exactly who I was honoring and it was Dean because Dean is such an important part of my life,” says Abdul. “He taught me to love dance. And he’s such a kind person, such a great teacher, he’s carried over into everything in my life.”
Abdul has known Barlow for decades — he’s been her coach since he was 7, and they later won an Emmy award together. She says he has become an integral part of her personal and professional life, serving as a mentor to both her and her sister.

To kick off the renovation of the San Fernando Valley recreation center, Abdul and the show’s contractor Jason Cameron renovated several rooms, creating spaces for arts and crafts, a staff lounge, and a dance studio. She called the extensive work a challenge but says she enjoyed every second.
“I hammered my own finger in with a sledgehammer and it’s still healing,” she recalls with a laugh, noting that she learned to use a variety of tools and gadgets to get the job done. “It was a lot of work. I kept saying, ‘My talent is in my feet, guys. It’s not in my hands.’ But it was so much fun and so worth it.”
She continues, “It was so unreal to see this place that was so much part of my childhood landscape and be able to change it, update it and make it a beautiful place for kids to dance.”

Abdul integrated floating dance bars, sound systems, video cameras, stage platforms for teachers, seating areas for parents and more into the studio, transforming it from “an absolute shell” into a “state-of-the-art studio”. After she did, the “Opposites Attract” singer surprised Barlow with the big reveal, something she didn’t think was possible.

“Dean is one of the nicest and most humble cake guys you will ever meet. And it’s hard to surprise him. So the fact that we did it was so much more special, he was really surprised. It was very sentimental for him,” she explains of the sweet moment when Barlow was told the new dance studio was now named after him.
“He had a little bit of tears in his eyes and in the studio we also hung pictures of him when he was young and dancing. Just seeing the joy in his eyes and his face is worth everything,” she continues. “He’s a big part of the legacy I’m going to leave behind and I just wanted him to know how special and how important he was.”

For Abdul, completing the renovation was more than just a tribute to Barlow, it was a way to pass it on — something she says her entire adult life has been devoted to.
“I remember going in and out of these parks and recreation spaces as a young kid. I was a student there. I was a camper. So I think it means a lot to be able to give something back to future generations, learn to align their hearts with passion,” she tells PEOPLE.
Secret Celebrity Renovation, hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Nischelle Turner, follows celebrities who are giving back to the people who helped them get where they are today through home improvement projects. Aside from Abdul, stars like Lauren Alaina, Eve, Chris Paul, Anthony Ramos and Wayne Brady have also surprised loved ones in the celebrity makeover series.

Former University Dean Barlow ’46 Dies at the Age of 87
Former Wesleyan Dean of Studies and University Dean Mark Barlow ’46 died June 23 at the age of 87 in Hanover, N.H.
Born in 1925 in Utica, New York, he graduated from Wesleyan with a degree in mathematics after serving in the Navy. He received an M.A. from Colgate University and a PhD in Education from Cornell University. He married Jane Atwood in 1954 and became Dean of Undergraduates at Wesleyan in 1957 and later Dean of the University. Because of his age, students nicknamed him “The Boy Dean,” but he quickly gained a reputation for treating students’ academic and disciplinary problems with humor and an appreciation for individual personalities. At the height of the Cold War, students stole the monument from Douglas Cannon and presented it to the head of the USSR United Nations delegation as a “symbol of peace, brotherhood and friendship.” Barlow drove to New York to retrieve the cannon and explain the prank to the Soviet delegation. When students tried to steal it from the basement of Barlow’s home, he quipped, “There were so many students coming in that we had to leave flashlights around so they wouldn’t use matches and start a fire.” He supported select students who during of the civil rights era when Freedom Riders participated in the South. He later served as a trustee at Wesleyan and received an Alumni Award in 1981 and a Service Award in 2011.
In 1965 he returned to Cornell as vice president for student affairs and subsequently became vice provost. During the tumultuous demonstrations of 1969 when African-American students occupied the fraternity, Barlow was known for his ability to converse with students on both sides of the barricades.
In 1979 he became principal of St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Mass., where he was popular not only with students but also with faculty and alumni. During his tenure, applications surged and he ran a successful capital campaign.
After retiring in 1988, he spent a year in Cyprus accompanying his wife Jane, who was studying Cypriot archeology on a Fulbright scholarship. A lifelong summer resident of Big Moose Lake, New York, with family ties there, he co-edited a history of that community, Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks, published by Syracuse University Press. After moving to Kendal, a senior community in Hanover, NH, in 2008, he volunteered in the ER at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and later served on the volunteer board there. He was an enthusiastic participant in the Dartmouth adult education programme, particularly a number of courses on constitutional law. At the time of his death from cancer, he had just completed a one-year tenure as President of the Kendal Residents Council.
He is survived by his wife Jane, son Andrew Barlow of Carlisle, Massachusetts, daughters Sarah Barlow and Libby Barlow of Houston, Texas, and four grandchildren.
