Considered one of Hawaii’s most popular entertainers, Robi Kahakalau, or as many of us call her “Sistah Robi”, is undoubtedly one of our most versatile singers. She has won multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards for excellence in the Hawaiian recording industry. Her distinctive voice, creative energy, and command of seven languages (one of which is Hawaiian) put her in a class of her own.
The audiences that see her live performances are captivated by the enthusiasm and sheer joy she exudes. Her unpretentious demeanor, bright personality and infectious smile are all assets that complement her as an artist and allow her to bridge the gap between young and old, as well as cultural, ethnic, language and certainly musical barriers.
As a third-generation Hawaiian musician who was born and raised in Germany, the “Hapa Hawaiian – Half German” first moved to Hawaii in 1980. “The moment she stepped off the plane,” Robi knew, “she had found her new home.” She was determined to study and soak up everything about her Hawaiian roots. Little did she know that 10 years later she was a teacher in Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawaii as well as a successful recording artist.
Robi began singing professionally in her late teens. But it wasn’t until she began recording and singing lead for the Hawaiian Style Band in 1990 that her distinctive voice was widely recognized and her musical talent admired throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
In 1995, Kahakalau released her first solo project entitled Sistah Robi, which became an instant favorite on the local charts. Robi shows her creative energy and versatility by choosing songs that present an image of old and new, Hawaiian and Haole, gentle and wild – like Robi herself.
Her second solo CD, Keiki o ka `Āina, released in 1997, further revealed Robi’s ability as an accomplished singer, reflecting her wide range of musical styles and her ability to bring together some of Hawaii’s finest musical talent.
For Millennium, Kahakalau released her third solo CD. “All I Want”, which clearly expresses Robi’s aloha for diversity and her talent as a singer and skilled linguist. It also showcases Robi’s natural talent for harmonization, well known to her live audiences everywhere. What’s even more amazing is that this CD reveals her talent as a top-class aspiring arranger and producer. Sistah Robi says, “All I want is to share my songs with anyone who enjoys the different styles of music that reflect who I am.”
Between her own CD releases, she has been busy touring and performing with some of Hawaii’s finest musicians and singers – including the Mākaha Sons, the late Dennis Pavao, “Auntie” Genoa Keawe, Fiji, Sean Na’auao, Cyril Pahinui, Jeff Rasmussen, the former Ka’au Crater Boys, Hapa and more. These tours take her throughout the mainland United States and include several engagements at Carnegie Hall, regular performances in Los Angeles (West Coast), Denver and Las Vegas, as well as international trips to Tahiti, Guam and more recently Japan and Sri Lanka.

Multi Na Hoku Hanohano award winner “Sistah Robi” Kahakalau happens to be Talk Story host McKenna Maduli’s aunt. From Hawaiian Style Band to solo artist, Hawaiian music has been her calling. So it was natural for the musician to return to her roots at McKenna’s family home in what she affectionately calls “Mount Kalihi” to reflect on her life and career. She shared with McKenna what she calls many beautiful and precious moments at the Kata Hale, from rehearsals to parties to many memories of belly laughs.
“I was just on cloud nine to be with Makaha Sons,” recalls Kahakalau, describing how she came to Kata Maduli for jam sessions. “I remember Makaha Sons were here, Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Pavao, everyone was in your garage and I was totally impressed. I think I’ll go on tour with these guys and we’ll rehearse. It was amazing. It was at the very beginning. In no time we were a group that was inseparable and running everywhere.
The versatile singer spoke about her debut album from 1995, Sistah Robi, and admitted those songs are still some of the most requested. “I’m just so grateful because I’ve only made five CDs in total. “Keiki o Ka Aina” and then “All I Want” and then a long pause. Then a Christmas album, then “Robi Calling” and then the single that just came out.
Kahakalau isn’t finished yet either. “I have songs that are ready to be recorded. Maybe I should talk to your father. He’s a great producer.”
During the talk story, McKenna recalled a favorite song by “Sistah Robi” that inspired the then-Los Angeles-based journalist to return to the islands for good. “I wrote ‘Makua’ for people who move away and then get so homesick that they move back home,” the popular singer said. “I’ve heard other people say Makua makes them homesick.” She acknowledges that many locals who live on the mainland do not live there voluntarily. “It’s cheaper to live and more affordable. In their hearts, they all want to come home. No one should be denied life here.”
Kahakalau is a third generation Hawaiian musician and had a great year releasing the song “Kalikoikawai” with Brickwood Galuteria, which was nominated for a Na Hoku Hanohano Award.
