Since Russell Knox doesn’t have the charisma of Rickie Fowler or Rory McIlroy, golf fans may yet get to know him.
Here’s some help:
Born to an American father and Scottish mother, Knox has already carved a niche for himself as the top professional golfer graduating from a First Coast college.
Knox has one PGA Tour win left before matching the two won by Jacksonville University graduate Donnie Hammond (Bob Hope and the Texas Open). But Knox gets bonus points when he was picked as a substitute in the World Golf Championship HSBC Champions in Shanghai last November and then defeated a field that included Jordan Spieth, McIlroy, Fowler and Bubba Watson.
Knox became the first player to win a WGC event in his first start since 1999. He has since finished second twice, and as of May 1st has risen to 30th in the world golf rankings and 3rd in the money list ($2,851,401). He is third on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation (.721) and 14th in hitting fairways (.692).
That’s in the ropes. Outside, Knox is personable, humble, and likely won’t let success change him.
“Nothing changed him,” said former JU teammate Matt Kleinrock.
“He’s been nice to every person he’s ever met,” added Kipp Henritzy, who also played with Knox at JU.
It’s been an arduous journey for the slim lad from Inverness, Scotland, who led JU to his only Atlantic Sun title to date, then scraped his way through mini-tours and the Hooters Tour for five years before earning a qualifying spot in a Web.com took advantage of the Tour event in 2011, which started a chain of events that led to the PGA Tour.
“I won, made a lot of cuts and I feel like my game is ready for another big one,” Knox said. “I have to start turning the top 30 into the top 10 and I’ve played in five majors and missed four cuts. Obviously that’s an area where I need to start getting better. But it takes time.”
Knox, who turns 31 next month, has been nothing but patient.
NEVER CAUSED PROBLEMS
Moms rave about their kids and Valerie Knox is no exception.
“He was probably the perfect son,” she said. “He never got into trouble, we always knew where he was and he worked hard at school.”
Surrounded by open farmland, Inverness is a busy tourist attraction in summer, close to Loch Ness and its famous, elusive resident “Nessie”.
“It was a great place to grow up,” Knox said.
His father, Mike Knox, was born in California and came to Scotland in the 1970s to run a division of his father’s electronics company. He met his wife when she worked a summer job at a resort hotel and the couple have been married for 31 years and have two children: Diane, a Glasgow radio personality who goes by the name ‘DJ Knoxy’, and Russell.
Russell Knox first started playing football, played ice hockey for several years and started playing golf after tagging along with his father at Nairn Dunbar, a nearby links course.
“He was a very good athlete,” said Mike Knox. “And whatever he set out to do, it was 100 percent.”
Knox won a few local junior tournaments and had enough success to force a difficult decision at the age of 16: choose a sport.
He went with golf.
“I chose wisely,” he said with a smile.
Knox and his father eventually hired First Point UK, a recruitment service that sent junior and amateur CVs from UK players to US colleges. Knox received a list of schools willing to offer him partial scholarships and began eliminating schools for a major cause.
“I went through the list and I was like, ‘too cold…too cold,'” he said. “I was fed up with cold weather.”
Then his eyes fell on a suitable one: Jacksonville University.
SCOTTISH INVASION
Kipp Henritzy remembers the day he arrived on the JU campus to enroll for the spring semester and met his teammates at a meetup.
“They looked like a bunch of homeless people,” he said. “Duncan Stewart [team No. 1] was working in a slaughterhouse in Scotland and accidentally cut his face. He looked like he’d lost a knife fight. We had Seiji Hirai, a Japanese guy with an Afro Russell, that skinny kid with long hair. We all looked like a bunch of outcasts.”
But they could play, led by Knox and Stewart. Between 2003 and 2007, Stewart won eight times and Knox three times, earning a combined 19 top-10 finishes in his junior and senior seasons.
In 2005-2006, Knox and Stewart shared the A-Sun singles title by scoring the same each day: 70-68-68. JU won the conference title and Knox placed 15th in an NCAA regional competition.
Knox played for Mike Flemming as a freshman, then for Jim Taketa for his next three years. Knox still holds the JU record for career scoring average (72.85) and has the two lowest single-season scoring averages in school history.
Towards the end of his JU career, Knox said he knew for a fact that he had the game for the PGA Tour.
He later found out there was nothing certain about it.
“I was convinced that I would go pro and make a living,” he said. “I hypnotized myself and had this super confidence. I was a great chipper and putter, but my overall game wasn’t ready.”
THE BIG POND
Knox made his pro debut on the eGolf Tour (formerly the Tar Heel Tour) in 2007 on a long-forgotten course in South Carolina.
He shot 1-under 71 in his first round.
“I was nervous, I was everywhere, but I kind of scraped it out,” he said. “But I was pretty happy with my 1-under.”
Then Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey came in with a 61 – with a bogey on the last hole, a par 5.
“Here I was happy with a 71 and this guy beats me by 10 shots and had a chance to shoot 59,” Knox said. “That’s when I realized I was a small fish in a big pond. I have to work hard on that.”
Knox redoubled his efforts again. Kathy Godby, a Savannah, Georgia resident who hosted players at the Hooters Tour’s Savannah Village Classic, recalls a particular habit Knox had.
“The boys all slept in our basement and when we called them to dinner, Russell would slowly walk up the steps, holding an imaginary golf club and working on his grip and backswing,” she said. “He came into the kitchen still fumbling with his grip and wings. Only after figuring out what he was trying to figure out did he sit down at the table.”
It was also a time when Knox reunited with Flemming, a PGA of America pro long before he coached at JU. Knox was at the UNF golf course one day and stopped to watch Flemming work with Duncan Stewart. Knox said he liked Flemming’s simple approach to the golf swing, his demeanor – and his war stories.
“He was a Marine and I loved the stories he told,” Knox said.
This began an eight-year relationship that lasted until April 2014, when Flemming died. The two became so close that they spoke on the phone after every round of competition that Knox played, regardless of the Hardscrabble Minitour event.
“He would dissect it,” Knox said. “We went through almost every shot. He wasn’t a father figure, but he was someone I really needed at the time.”
DIFFERENT RELATIONSHIP
Knox started another important relationship while he was still on the mini tours. By this time his parents had moved to the First Coast and Mike Knox was the director of outside golf operations at Marsh Landing. During breaks in the schedule and during the winter, Russell Knox worked for his father, washing carts and loading and unloading golf bags.
Knox noticed that his gaze wandered to the nearby tennis courts, where Andrea Hernandez, one of the club’s tennis pros, taught lessons.
Brief conversations eventually led to their first date: Trivia Night at Lynch’s Irish Pub, with Henritzy as the third wheel. Other times, Knox had to hit his father for a few bucks so he and Hernandez could go to Wendy’s.
Hernandez said Knox’s sense of humor won her over.
“I thought he was cute and he seemed nice,” she said. “He was funny. He tries to make a joke out of everything.”
“She’s a big reason I made it,” Knox said. “She thought golf was a joke compared to tennis – golfers are lazy, don’t eat well, don’t train well – but she opened my eyes to the fact that I need to take this more seriously.”
Hernandez would make one of her biggest contributions to her husband’s career last fall. After finishing 21st at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia, Knox rose the next week after J.B. Holmes into the HSBC Champions. Knox didn’t have a visa to bring him to China, so his wife spent all day at the Chinese embassy in Kuala Lumpur, wading through a deep pool of bureaucracy to complete the paperwork.
Knox arrived in China in time for a round of training – in which he would have to use his wife as a caddy until his regular looper plowed through his own Visa difficulties. He won by two shots.
After a few starts and stops on the Web.com Tour — including a 59 at the Boise Open and a win at the Chiquita Classic — Knox remains on the PGA Tour. If the 2015-2016 season ended today, he would make the FedEx Cup playoffs for the third year in a row.
The only thing missing from the equation was his beloved coach, who died two years ago in April. Knox said hiring another coach is not ideal for either party.
“I’ll never have anyone like Mike,” Knox said. “It’s not even worth looking for someone else. I will never find anyone willing to invest so much time and not care about others.”
