CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) — With the November election less than a month away, candidates are making their final pushes. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe made a stopover in central Virginia on Monday.
Terry McAuliffe came to the Jefferson Area Board for Aging, or JABA, on Monday afternoon. Many may know JABA as a senior center, but McAuliffe came to the preschool in the building to discuss his educational plans.
“Let’s make sure we keep moving forward and getting every one of these kids access to early childhood education because it’s transformed our kids,” said Terry McAuliffe.
Terry McAuliffe and his wife Dorothy say places like JABA are so transformative and helpful for children.
“It’s generational,” said Dorothy McAuliffe. “So we also have seniors who come here. And the educational opportunities, the emotional, social development for young people as well as for the seniors, it’s just a really thriving center and we have to do everything we can to support places like this.”
By support, they mean investing money in education and increasing teachers’ salaries. McAuliffe says he will do both if elected governor.
“It’s important to look at these success stories,” said Terry McAuliffe. “And you know we all see that and then we go back and kind of use it as a model that we have to do in the rest of the Commonwealth.”
The preschool at JABA is only a small part of the building, but for McAuliffe and Pamela Northam it represents a larger issue: creating more spaces like this.
“Twenty-five thousand 3- and 4-year-olds now have access to quality early childhood care and education, which is amazing, but it’s still not enough,” said Pamela Northam. “We still know there are thousands of kids out there without those opportunities.”
McAuliffe says a successful school is one where all teachers and children are vaccinated. He then defended his statement in the recent debate about parents having a say in what their children are taught.
“I was very clear on that,” McAuliffe said. “We don’t teach critical race theory here in the Commonwealth of Virginia and it’s a racist dog whistle and he needs to stop. I care about the union. Our children should not be used as political pawns.”
McAuliffe says this election is about caring for children and women in the workforce, which is why he joined JABA.

With just hours before the Virginia governor race, the stakes – and the mood – are up for Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe and his wife, Dorothy McAuliffe, who criss-crossed the Commonwealth over the weekend in preparation for Tuesday’s election to run, high.
“We had a great day today,” Terry told PEOPLE from the Trail in a phone interview with his wife on Sunday after they attended a Halloween parade in Leesburg with “hundreds and hundreds of little kids out there in the most amazing costumes I’ve ever had.” have seen.”

The couple, who have been married for 33 years and share five adult children and two dogs, lived at Virginia’s Executive Mansion in Richmond from 2014 to 2018, during Terry’s first four years as the state’s governor, which prohibits consecutive terms for those in his serve the highest office.

To return to the governorship, 64-year-old Terry must defeat Republican businessman Glenn Youngkin in a race that’s surprisingly close given President Joe Biden’s 10-point win over Donald Trump to put Virginia ahead of a White House race year to conquer.
Youngkin, whose campaign has not responded to PEOPLE’s request for an interview, has been backed by Trump. The former president released a statement of support Monday, saying the two “get along very well and strongly believe in many of the same policies,” though Youngkin — hoping to focus the race on other issues like education and crime – this has attempted to distance himself from the divisive Trump, who has not appeared in person for him.
Meanwhile, in a bid to reach and excite as many voters as possible, former Gov. McAuliffe invited a number of high-profile Democrats to campaign, including former President Barack Obama, President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who recently summed up the importance of the election as an indicator of how her party — and the Biden administration — will fare in the coming months and in next year’s midterm elections.
“What happens in Virginia will determine what happens in 2022, 2024 and so on,” Harris said Friday at a McAuliffe campaign rally in Norfolk. “Lives will forever be affected by what you do in this choice.”
It may seem like a heavy burden for the Democrat, whose campaign message has framed the race as a choice to continue the advances McAuliffe has touted since his first term or return to Trump’s divisive politics by voting for his preferred candidate. (Youngkin takes a very different case for himself.)
“I’m not worried about the pressure,” McAuliffe told PEOPLE, adding that his focus is on improving the lives of Virginians. “We have 20 very serious plans — to raise teachers’ salaries above the national average, to reach the $15 minimum wage by 2024, to get sick leave for everyone, to get sick leave for all families. That is what is at stake in this election.”

Win or lose, Terry and Dorothy McAuliffe say they worked as hard as they could during a campaign that has spawned more than 2,500 events in less than a year. “We didn’t leave anything on the field,” the former governor said, adding that he runs ten events a day, seven days a week as Election Day approaches.
“People always ask me, ‘How do you do that?’ I love it. I love hanging out with people,” he said, adding that earlier in the day at the parade, a man grabbed his arm to thank him for helping nearly 200,000 during his first term gave former offenders the right to vote.
“Boy oh boy, that’s why you do what you do,” he said of such encounters. “It keeps you going, gives you energy. If I could do this 24 hours a day, I would try to do it 20. I think I need to get some sleep.”
When asked about actual waking downtime, Terry and Dorothy laughed and indicated that it’s been a while since they’ve had a chance to relax as a family — let alone take a vacation. Until the results come in, according to the former first lady, their focus is on “walking through the tape” at the finish line.
“We’ve talked very little about what we’re going to do after this race,” said Dorothy. “We love to ski as a family, that’s one thing we love. We love nature, we love water sports, so we love being near the water. We don’t know exactly what it actually looks like afterwards. But we’ll figure something out.”
Right now, politics is a family affair for the McAuliffe clan, which includes Dori (30), Jack (28), Mary (27), Sally (21) and Peter (19). “They’re all here in one form or another helping with the campaign,” Terry said. “We actually have three of the five that are here this weekend.”

Without naming any specific problems or advice, he said the children influence his approach to campaigning and government.
“We’re a big Irish Catholic family, so we sit around this kitchen table and everyone discusses the issues,” he said. “When you have kids in college and just out of college and one in high school, it gives you a wide range of what young people in this country are thinking about and it’s very helpful to bring home what they experience every day , talk to us about it, and then let’s collaborate with them and articulate how we can make things better for everyone.”
When asked if they had ever had political disagreements, married couples thought long and hard, but could not recall ever not being on the same page on an important matter.
“We’re both independent thinkers, don’t get me wrong,” Dorothy said. “I think we push each other on certain issues and in 33 years we’ve learned how to solve it all.”
“Dorothy would be glad if I got a little more sleep,” her husband joked.
Their children are happy to share their own opinions – but also their parents’ sense of duty, says the couple, who have been involved in politics for most of their children’s lives.
“One thing we’ve always tried to teach our kids is service, public service, giving back. All of our kids have done that in the military or other private sector charities and whatnot,” Terry said.
Acknowledging the sacrifices of growing up in a political family, children have been told from an early age, “When you want to do something worth doing, it’s not always easy,” Dorothy said.

“It’s not easy for kids to have their parents in that focus like they are every day,” added Terry. “You understand that Dorothy and I step up to the plate. It’s not about us. It’s about helping other people and they’re so proud of that. And we are so proud of our children.”
Eyeing a possible second term, the former first lady said life in the Executive Mansion would “be a little different for us this time” because “we’re empty nesters” with the youngest Peter going to college.
