Where is Brian Hile Now

Investigation Discovery’s Web of Lies: Catfished focuses on a chilling case that had its roots in an online relationship. Brian Curtis Hile was arrested in San Diego, California after traveling all the way there from Michigan to commit a double homicide. The episode looks at the events leading up to this brazen attempt and why Brian wanted to kill two people. So if you’re wondering what happened to him, here’s what we know!

Who is Brian Hile?

Brian Hile lived in Fremont, Michigan with his grandmother, Virginia Dewitte. At the time, he was in an online romantic relationship with a woman in South Africa. Their relationship lasted for a few years during which Brian sent romantic messages and sexually explicit pictures of himself. However, it turned out that the person on the other end was actually a man from South Africa, using another person’s photos he found online.

When Brian learned the truth, he was outraged and began searching online for the identity of the woman in the pictures. These images belonged to Tiffany Watkins, who lived in San Diego, California and had no idea they were being used in the scam. Many years earlier, her photobucket account containing these images was compromised, resulting in them being published on several other websites as an advertisement for a pornographic website.

Despite having nothing to do with the catfishing scam, Brian mistakenly assumed otherwise and began some sort of investigation to uncover her identity. After visiting several chat rooms and gaming blogs, Brian tracked her down to San Diego where she lived with her boyfriend. In August 2011, Brian was arrested just a few miles from her home with a trove of evidence in his possession.

Brian had hacked into the woman’s email address and obtained her location, phone numbers, and the names and addresses of schools she had attended in the past. Not only that, he had zip ties and tape with him in addition to a to-do list. In it, Brian listed things like a knife, a trench coat, chloroform, and learning to pick a lock, among other things.

Where is Brian Hile now?

In August 2013, Brian, then 29, was convicted on two counts of interstate stalking. His grandmother said he was obsessed with the relationship and alluded to killing the person when he found out about the cheating. In December 2013, Brian was sentenced to 60 months in prison followed by three years of probation. According to court documents, he was jailed again in 2020 for 24 months for not following orders. He was released from prison in August 2021, according to federal records. Since then, Brian has kept away from public attention, with his last known residence being in Fremont.

Stalker jailed after plotting to murder swimwear model after hoaxer used her photo to fool him in ‘catfish’ internet dating scheme

Stalker jailed after plotting to murder swimwear model after gay scammer used her photo to trick him into ‘catfish’ internet dating scheme

A stalker has been sentenced to five years in prison for plotting to kill a swimwear model who had unknowingly become part of an internet dating scam similar to MTV’s Catfish.

Brian Hile, 29, was caught a mile from Tiffany Watkins’ home in San Diego, California, with a to-do list that included buying a knife and chloroform.

Her picture had been used by a gay man in South Africa who had pretended to be a woman – and started a two-year online relationship with him.

The would-be killer: Brian Hile was arrested before he could carry out his evil revenge plan

When Hile discovered he had been deceived, he decided to go after Miss Watkins even though she had played no part in the deception.

The erotic images of her used by the scammer had only entered the public domain when they were stolen from an online account of her when she was younger.

Hile, who is unemployed, was jailed for five years in what the FBI has described as a “cautionary tale about online romance and revenge.”

It also sounds like an episode of “Catfish” telling innocent dates how they’ve been manipulated by people who aren’t who they say they are.

Often the scammers use pictures of attractive women they found on the internet to fool their targets and feed their twisted need for control.

Hile was living with his 86-year-old grandmother Virginia Dewitte in her trailer in Fremont, Michigan when he was deceived by an unnamed man in South Africa.

Hile spoke to “her” on the phone and regularly sent her pictures of his privates, though they never met in person or video chatted on Skype.

Prosecutors said that when he found out his “lover” was a gay man, he exclaimed, “Grandma, it’s a gay man! i hate gays

Deceived: A gay man used images of this model to ‘catfish’ Mr Hine.

Dewitte told investigators Hile “fell in love with the woman” and was “obsessed with the failed internet relationship and deceit.”

By researching the internet he was able to find out that the pictures were indeed of Miss Watkins – so he fixed them in revenge as South Africa was too far away.

Hile boarded a bus and headed to California in August 2011, and when his relatives discovered this, they were deeply concerned.

An FBI affidavit states that his intention was to “kill a slut” and that he wanted Miss Watkins to meet a “slow and painful death.”

Hile’s brother Brett went looking for him and after somehow tracking him down the police were called and Hile was arrested.

He was reportedly carrying a notebook at the time that contained “a list of names, addresses, phone numbers, and other personal information of people Hile intended to kill.”

Easy target: The scammer probably found an easy target in Mr. Hine when using the pictures of a young model

There was also a section that read, “Supplies: trench coat, rope? Duct tape, mace? Chloraform?, knife, plastic cable ties”.

The notebook read: “Make sure all information is current and ACCURATE – I know where/who I need to go to and what I can do.”

Prosecutors said Hile not only planned to kill Miss Watkins but also her boyfriend David Cranford, 30.

Hile was found guilty by a San Diego jury of two counts of interstate stalking “with intent to kill, injure or molest.”

Only after that did the full story of what happened to Miss Watkins emerge.

FBI Special Agent Steve Kim of the High-Tech Response Team for Computer and Technology Crimes said she was “twice a victim.”

Revenge: When Mr Hine learned it wasn’t the woman, he plotted a revenge plan against her – and came perilously close to possibly ending it

Agent Kim said that in 2007, when she was 18, she took some steamy pictures of herself along with shots of her in a bikini and posted them to Photobucket.

Her account was hacked and about 200 images started circulating on the internet, some of which were used to promote porn sites.

Agent Kim said that Miss Watkins never met Hile and that she had “no idea” what the pictures of her would be used for.

Even after the conviction, Brett Hile claims he doesn’t believe his brother actually pulled off the murder.
