Aaron Fotheringham

Aaron Fotheringham is an extreme wheelchair athlete who performs tricks borrowed from skateboarding and BMX. He competes in the Vegas Am Jam series in skate park competitions, usually against BMX riders

Fotheringham calls his activity “WCMX”. He is the first person to successfully perform a backflip[1] at age 14 and a double backflip[2] at age 18. Unicycle spins and rail grinds.[3] He plans to merge the backflip with the 180 aerial into what he calls “Flair”.

Career [edit]

Although he used crutches from an early age, he has been a full-time wheelchair user since he was eight years old. He would watch his brother ride BMX at the skate park, and one day his brother told him to try riding his chair at the park, an event of which Fotheringham said: “One day my brother said, ‘That would it be really cool if you drop by in your chair, wanna try it?’” My dad was there and he gave me the thumbs up, so they helped me move my chair up a four foot quarter pipe and just fell there. Several times. Then I finally rode off one of them.”[4] He later remarked that “I did it, and I was hooked.”[5] He placed fourth in the middle BMX division in a competition that on August 26, 2006 at Sunny Springs Skate Park.

Fotheringham uses a bespoke WCMX wheelchair designed by Box Wheelchairs which is both lightweight and has all wheel suspension. This allows him to perform the same tricks as skateboarders and BMXers because the suspension cushions his landings. Fotheringham has worked with Box Designs Wheelchairs to refine the design in real-world situations, resulting in a bespoke chair that is, in his words, “quite indestructible”.[5] Fotheringham advises others trying these tricks to wear a helmet; He sustained multiple injuries from these tricks, including a broken elbow. He tries out new tricks by first showing them off in a foam pit. He then switches to a “Resi,” a harder plastic sheet over the cushions, before attempting the new trick on a regular skateboard ramp.[7] When asked if practice was necessary, Fotheringham replied, “I don’t see it as practice, I see it as a fun way to live my life.”[7]

In 2010, Fotheringham took part in the Nitro Circus Live Tour, an action sports road show that tours Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the United States. “Just after my 18th birthday I got an email from a producer of Nitro Circus. He said they heard I was trying to jump a big ramp but that nobody would give me permission. And they said, ‘Here at Nitro Circus, we’re not going to stop you,'” Fotheringham later told James Renhard for Mpora.[4] On the tour, Fotheringham performed a 50-foot ramp-to-ramp jump, who did backflips, double backflip attempts and the world’s first wheelchair frontflip on February 9, 2011 in New Zealand.

In the media[edit]

In 2008, he appeared in an episode of the reality series The Secret Millionaire and received a $20,000 donation from Century Software founder Gregory Haerr.[9] In 2009, Fotheringham worked as a stunt double for Kevin McHale’s character Artie Abrams on the television series Glee.

In 2022 he competed in America’s Got Talent: Extreme. After receiving Nikki Bella’s golden buzzer in the audition round, he made it to the finals and earned second place.
