First defendant convicted in Atlanta rapper’s recording studio killing

BEFORE | Two men are now on trial in the deadly 2016 Atlanta rap studio shooting

Battle, Sheldon Dooley and Kenson Hunte have all been charged in the April 2016 shooting of 28-year-old aspiring rapper Jerome Blake. Nathan Hannon, 27, was also killed in the shooting; Police said Shannon raided the studio with Battle and Dooley. Hunte was involved in the attack but was not in the studio during filming, according to police.

The intended target was a rapper named “Blood,” detectives said. Battle told investigators Hunte wanted him back $50,000 in cash and a necklace from Blood. Battle, Hannon, and Dooley confronted Blood and Blake in the Metropolitan Parkway headquarters’ recording studio and a shootout ensued, leaving Shannon and Battle dead, according to police.

Battle was originally scheduled to stand trial alongside Dooley, but Dooley and Battle’s cases have been separated and Dooley will face trial at a later date, according to prosecutors. Hunte will also have his own trial in the future.

The case was featured in A&E’s true crime series The First 48, which follows the first 48 hours of the police investigation.

Man convicted in 2016 murder of Atlanta rapper Blizzy

A 21-year-old man has been convicted of murder in the shooting death of Atlanta rapper Jerome Blake, aka “Blizzy,” and one of the men prosecutors say came to rob him, Nathan Hannon. The two men were shot dead at Headquarters Recording Studio in southwest Atlanta in 2016.

Casey Battle helped set in motion the plot that led to the fatal shooting, prosecutors said. Battle contacted Caleb Sims, aka “Bally,” to set up a recording session in Sims’ rented space. Two other men — Kenson Hunte and Sheldon Dooley — are also charged in the shooting and will face charges in Fulton County at a later date.

Prosecutors said Hunte, a rapper known as “Rich Show,” told Battle, Dooley and Hannon that he wanted to rob Sims to get back a necklace and $50,000 in cash, which he claimed Hunte stole from him. The necklace had Hunte’s nickname “Rich Show” emblazoned on the necklace’s locket.

Battle contacted Sims to set up the fake recording session and unlocked the studio’s front door to let Dooley, Hannon and an unidentified man into the building, police said. Battle brought the men into the recording area where Sims, Blake and an audio engineer were working. The building was secured and the men could not have got inside without Battle’s help, prosecutors said.

The suspects were caught on surveillance footage entering the recording studio.

In the recording studio, one of the men pulled out a gun and yelled at Sims, “Give it up.” The unidentified man shot Blake in the face with a .40 caliber handgun, killing him at the scene. Sims returned fire with an AK-47, hitting Hannon, who also died.

The AK-47 was semi-automatic but had a butt stock so it fired like an automatic weapon, police said.

Since Hannon and Blake were killed in an armed robbery, Battle was charged with both murders under Georgia law. He remained at the scene after the shooting and lied to local police about his involvement, but later told detectives that Hunte forced him into gaining access to the studio in order to rob Sims.

However, detectives found Instagram messages showing Battle-initiated contact with Hunte.

The recording studio was littered with .40 caliber handgun and assault rifle casings. Hunte’s “Rich Show” necklace was found near the bodies. The case drew national attention and was featured on last year’s A&E show The First 48.

Investigators located Dooley after an anonymous tip from someone who recognized Dooley from the surveillance video. Battle was already in custody when Dooley was arrested on August 19, 2016 in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Battle was convicted of felony murder, attempted armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm while committing a felony. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 5 years, according to Fulton County. Hunte and Dooley will be tried in Fulton County Superior Court at a later date.

Studio Recording Session Turns Deadly One Guilty Verdict

Crime & Safety Studio recording session turns deadly | A guilty verdict A man pretended to host a recording session at a popular Atlanta studio, but it was just a cover for armed robbery and murder. answer

ATLANTA, GA — A Fulton County Superior Court jury found 21-year-old Casey Battle guilty in the death of an Atlanta rapper. On April 20, 2016, Kenson Hunter, 36, set in motion a plot that would ultimately result in the deaths of two men. That night, Hunte prompted Battle, 31-year-old Sheldon Dooley, 27-year-old Nathan Hannon and another unidentified man to rob Caleb Sims, aka “Bally,” at gunpoint at the popular Headquarters Recording Studio on Metropolitan Parkway. Hunte arranged the armed robbery to recover a necklace and $50,000 in cash, which he claimed Sims stole from him earlier. Hunte’s nickname “Rich Show” was emblazoned on the necklace’s locket.

To gain access to the building to carry out the armed robbery, Battle contacted Sims to arrange a studio recording session and then Sims rented the space. Once inside, Battle unlocked the studio’s front door, allowing Dooley, Hannon, and the unidentified man into the building. Battle escorted the three men to the studio’s recording area, where Sims, 28-year-old aspiring rapper Jerome Blake, aka “Blizzy,” and an audio engineer were working. The building was normally locked and secured to the public from the outside, so without Battle’s access the other three would not have been allowed inside. After gaining access to the recording area, Battle introduced his new producers. One of the defendants then drew his gun and yelled at Sims, “Give it up,” and the unidentified man shot Blake in the face with a .40 caliber pistol. Blake died at the scene.

Sims then retrieved his AK-47 and returned fire, hitting Hannon, who also died at the scene. The AK-47 was semi-automatic but equipped with a baton, so it fired like an automatic weapon. According to Georgia Law, Battle was charged with both murders because Hannon and Blake were killed during an armed robbery. After the shooting, Dooley fled the scene, but Battle stayed at the studio and spoke to responding officers. Battle lied at the scene about his involvement, but later revealed to detectives Andre Lowe and Vincent Velazquez that Hunte forced him to gain access to the studio to rob Sims at gunpoint. However, there were Instagram messages showing that Battle had indeed made contact with Hunte.

The recording studio was littered with shell casings from a .40 caliber pistol and an assault rifle. The necklace bearing Hunte’s nickname “Rich Show” was found near the bodies. The defendants were caught by surveillance cameras entering and exiting the recording studio room where the shooting took place. The surveillance video circulated in the media and police received an anonymous tip that one of the men pictured was Dooley. Battle was already in custody when US Marshals arrested Dooley on August 19, 2016 in Rancho Cucamonga, California.
