William Edgar Oddie (born 7 July 1941)[1] is an English novelist, comedian, songwriter, musician, artist, bird watcher, conservationist, television presenter and actor. He was a member of the comedy trio The Goodies.
A bird watcher since childhood in Quinton, Birmingham[2], Oddie has built a reputation as a naturalist, conservationist and wildlife TV presenter. During his time at Cambridge University, Oddie appeared in several Footlights Club productions. One of these, a revue called A Clump of Plinths, was so successful at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe that it was renamed Cambridge Circus and moved to the West End of London in September 1964, then to New Zealand and Broadway. Oddie wrote screenplays for and appeared briefly on the television series That Was the Week That Was.[6]
He appeared in Bernard Braden’s 1964 television series On The Braden Beat. He was subsequently a key cast member on the BBC radio series I’m Sorry, I’ll Read That Again, which featured many of his musical compositions. Some were released on the album Distinctly Oddie (Polydor, 1967). He was one of the first performers to parody a rock song by arranging the traditional Yorkshire folk song “On Ilkla Moor Baht’at” in the style of Joe Cocker’s hit rendition of the Beatles hit “With a Little Help from My Friends” ( released on John Peel’s Dandelion Records in 1970 and included in Peel’s special Most Treasured Singles box set) and singing “Andy Pandy” in the style of a tinny soul number such as Wilson Pickett or Geno Washington might play. On television, Oddie co-wrote and starred in the comedy series Twice a Fortnight, starring Graeme Garden, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Jonathan Lynn. Oddie, Brooke-Taylor and Garden then co-wrote and appeared in their television comedy series The Goodies (1970–1982). The Goodies also released records including “Father Christmas Do Not Touch Me”/”The In-Betweenies”, “The Funky Gibbon” (co-written by Oddie with Dave MacRae) and “Black Pudding Bertha”, which became hit singles in 1974 –75. They reformed briefly in 2005 for a successful 13 date tour of Australia.
Oddie, Brooke-Taylor and Garden voiced characters in the 1983 children’s animated show Bananaman.
Oddie, Brooke-Taylor and Garden sang their hit “Funky Gibbon” on the Amnesty International show A Poke in the Eye (With a Sharp Stick). They also performed the song on Top of the Pops. Along with Garden (who is a qualified doctor), Oddie co-wrote many episodes of the television comedy series Doctor in the House, including most of the first season and all of the second season. He has occasionally appeared in BBC Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue debate game, of which Garden and Brooke-Taylor were regular panelists. In 1982, Garden and Oddie wrote, but did not appear in, a six-part sci-fi sitcom called Astronauts for Central and ITV. The show was set in an international space station in the near future.[10]

Oddie’s first published work was an article on the bird life of Bartley Reservoir in Birmingham in the 1962 Annual Report of the West Midland Bird Club.[11] (He is first mentioned in the 1956 report, in which reports of his bird sightings are marked with his initials “WEO” [12] [13])). Since then he has written a number of books on birds and birdwatching and articles for many specialist publications including British Birds, Birdwatching Magazine and Birdwatch.
He discussed recorded birdsong with Derek Jones on a BBC Radio 4 program entitled Sounds Natural in August 1973.[14]
In the autumn of 1976 Oddie was involved in the successful identification of Britain’s first ever record of Pallas’s sedge sparrows on Fair Isle, Shetland.[15]
One of Oddie’s first forays into the world of television natural history was as a guest on Animal Magic in December 1977.[16] Another early natural history radio appearance was as a guest on Radio 4’s Through My Window in October, where he spoke of the birds of Hampstead Heath.[17]
On July 30, 1985 he was the subject of a 50 minute Nature Watch Special: Bill Oddie – Bird Watcher in which he was interviewed by Julian Pettifer[18] at locations where he had spent time bird watching including Bartley Reservoir, Christopher Cadbury Wetland Reserve at Upton Warren, RSPB Titchwell Marsh and Blakeney Point.[12]

When Britain Goes Wild was first broadcast in 2004, its 8pm time slot set a record 3.4 million viewers on BBC Two, a million more than Channel 4 programming at the time. Britain Goes Wild, renamed Springwatch the following year, became a wildlife broadcasting phenomenon, drawing up to 5 million viewers.
He became President of the West Midland Bird Club in 1999[20] having been Vice-President since 1991[20] and is a former Council Member of the RSPB. Oddie is also President of the League Against Cruel Sports[21] and Vice President of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.[22] He practiced bird ringing but let his license lapse.[12]
In 2003 Oddie set up a half marathon to raise money for various wildlife charities in his native town of Rochdale. Celebrities who attended the event include Ray Mears, Katherine Jenkins and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
In 2011, Oddie appeared as an investigator in Snares Uncovered: Killers in the Country.[24] The film was an exposé of traps in Scotland and was commissioned by animal welfare organization OneKind. During the investigation, Oddie discovered more than 70 traps and several stink pits.

During the 1960s and early 1970s, Oddie released a string of singles and at least one album. One of the former, issued in 1970 on John Peel’s Dandelion Records label (Catalogue #: 4786), was On Ilkla Moor Baht ‘at,[25] performed in the style of Joe Cocker’s With a Little Help from my Friends. . The B-side “Harry Krishna” featured the Hare Krishna chant substituting the names of contemporary famous people named Harry including Harry Secombe, Harry Worth, Harry Lauder and Harry Corbett, as well as puns such as “Harry [Hurry] Down Now” and “Harrystotle [Aristotle]”, ending with “Harry-ly [I really] have to go now”. Both tracks appear on the compilation CD Life Too, Has Surface Noise: The Complete Dandelion Records Singles Collection 1969–1972 (2007) .He was credited as vocalist for Spencer’s Washboard Kings on “Five Feet Two” (Rayrick LCR1001a) in 1966. The vocalist on the B-side of that 45rpm single “If You Knew Susie” was Jean Hart, Oddie’s future wife.[26]
He played drums and saxophone and appeared as Cousin Kevin in a production of The Who’s rock opera Tommy on 9 December 1972 at the Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury Park, London. He also contributed vocals to a Rick Wakeman album, Criminal Record.
He recorded a single, “Superspike”, featuring John Cleese and a group of British athletes billed to the “Superspike Squad” to fund their participation in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He co-produced the record with Stephen Shane.[27]
Oddie took part in English National Opera’s production of the comic opera The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan, in which he appeared in the role of Lord High Executioner, taking over the role of Eric Idle. In the early 1990s, Oddie was a DJ for London-based jazz radio station 102.2 Jazz FM.[28]
In 2007 Oddie appeared in the BBC series Play It Again.[29] As a result, he tries to realize his dream of becoming a rock guitarist. At first, teacher Bridget Mermikides tries to teach him using traditional methods, but he rebels: instead, he turns to his old friends Albert Lee, Dave Davies (of The Kinks) and Mark Knopfler for advice and starts his own business. He achieves his goal of playing lead guitar in the band at his daughter Rosie’s 21st birthday party and even manages to impress his former teacher.
In November 2010, he along with other members of The Goodies agreed to re-release their 1970s hit “The Funky Gibbon” to raise funds for the International Primate Protection League’s “Save the Gibbon” appeal.

Oddie appeared as the hapless window washer in Eric Sykes’ 1967 comedy story The Plank. In the late 1970s he also presented the live children’s entertainment show Saturday morning Saturday Banana (ITV/Southern Television). In the late 1980s he was the presenter of the BBC television program Fax (a ‘facts’ programme).
In 1981 he appeared as a telethon celebrity in New Zealand hosted by TV1.[30] He voices Asterix in the UK dub of the 1989 animated film Asterix and the Big Fight (an animated adaptation of the books Asterix and the Big Fight and Asterix and the Soothsayer, rewritten as Operation Getafix).
In 1992 he guest-starred in the US comedy television series Married… with Children for a three-part episode set in England.[31]
In 1997–98 he appeared on Channel 4’s Archaeological Program Time Team when the team excavated a Roman villa in Turkdean, Gloucestershire.
He was the presenter of a daytime BBC game show History Hunt (2003); and has appeared in the Doctor Who radio play Doctor Who and the Pirates. In 2004 he appeared in the very first episode of the BBC series Who Do You Think You Are? in which he examined his ancestors: he was visibly moved by their revelations. In 2005 he took part in Rolf on Art – the big event in Trafalgar Square – and in September of that year he was a celebrity guest on ITV1’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire alongside Lynda Bellingham. He also gave opinions on Channel 4’s top 100 cartoons that year, speaking about Tom and Jerry and cartoon incidents such as the South Park sketch “Asses of Fire: Bigger, Longer and Uncut”.
In 2006 Oddie appeared on the BBC show Never Mind the Buzzcocks [33] and also appeared on the current quiz show 8 out of 10 Cats. In 2006/2007 he was also the voice behind many B&Q commercials. On May 25, 2007, Oddie had a cameo appearance on Ronni Ancona’s new comedy sketch show Ronni Ancona & Co.
Also in 2007, three artists each painted a portrait of Oddie for the BBC program Star Portraits, starring Rolf Harris. One of the artists, Mark Roscoe, later revealed a dislike for Oddie and claimed to have incorporated veiled insults into his work.[34]

Oddie embarked on an Australian tour in June 2013 visiting all mainland capitals – Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth – in a series of one-off shows, An Oldie but a Goodie. A video message from Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden was shown during the performances.[37] Oddie made personal appearances on the television shows The Project and Adam Hills Tonight during the tour. He also directed a guest program spot for ABC-TV’s nightly music video show Rage.

They have one daughter, Rosie, born October 1985,[41] and live in Hampstead, North London. Rosie Oddie is a musician and also goes by the name Rosie Bones.[42]
Depression and bipolar disorder[edit]
Oddie suffered from depression for most of his life before being diagnosed with clinical depression in 2001.[43] He was reportedly admitted to Marylebone’s Capio Nightingale Psychiatric Hospital in March 2009 for treatment. His agent at the time, David Foster, said: “Bill gets these fits every two or three years where he comes down and recovers for about two weeks. He sometimes goes to the hospital or takes a break or has a change of scene to recharge his batteries. “[44] In January 2010, Oddie spoke to the media and revealed that he had in fact had two separate stays at different hospitals and was only released “in time for Christmas”. He said he’s been dealing with depression and bipolar disorder, describing the time as “probably the worst 12 months of my life.” Oddie explained that he plans to meet BBC executives to discuss his return to television work.
His illness resulted in Oddie not appearing in the 2009 and 2010 Springwatch series, although he did make a cameo appearance in the penultimate episode of the latter. He subsequently said he was fired from Springwatch and that this caused the depressive illness.
Oddie presented BBC Radio 4 Appeal on 10 August 2014 on behalf of the charity Bipolar UK. He admitted that he had attempted suicide as a result of his bipolar disorder during one of his depressive episodes.[46] On the British TV show Who Do You Think You Are? he attributed his adult depression and bipolar disorder to his minimal and painful relationship with his mother.[47]

On October 16, 2003, Oddie was made an OBE for his services to wildlife conservation in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. He wore a camouflage shirt and a rumpled jacket to receive his medal. In June 2004 Oddie and Johnny Morris were featured together in the first of a three part BBC Two series The Way We Went Wild about wildlife television presenters. In May 2005 he received the Peter Scott Memorial Award from the British Naturalists’ Association from BNA President David Bellamy “in recognition of his great contribution to our understanding of natural history and conservation”. Bill addressed his illness back in September last year and shared an update with fans last night.
