Chuck Todd

American journalist

For other people with similar names, see Charles Todd (disambiguation)

Charles David Todd (born April 8, 1972) is an American television journalist who is the 12th and current anchor of NBC’s Meet the Press. He also hosts Meet the Press Now, the daily edition of NBC News Now, and is Political Director for NBC News. Before taking charge of Meet the Press, Todd was the chief White House correspondent for NBC and host of MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown. He also serves as NBC News’ on-air political analyst for NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and Today.

Early life and education[edit]

Todd was born on April 8, 1972 in Miami, Florida to Lois Cheri (née Bernstein) and Stephen Randolph Todd.[2] He is Jewish on his mother’s side and was raised Jewish.[3][4] He graduated from Miami Killian Senior High School in Kendall, an unincorporated suburban community in the greater Miami area. Todd attended George Washington University from 1990 to 1994. He majored in political science and minored in music, but did not earn a degree.[5]

Career [edit]

Political campaigns[edit]

Before entering the world of political reporting and analysis, Todd gained hands-on political experience running own-initiative campaigns in Florida and various national campaigns in Washington, D.C.[6] While a student, Todd worked for Senator Tom Harkin’s (D-Iowa) 1992 presidential campaign and later began working part-time at The National Journal’s The Hotline.

The hotline[edit]

From 1992 to March 12, 2007, Todd worked for The Hotline of the National Journal, where he was Editor-in-Chief for six years.[7] As part of his position, Todd also co-hosted the webcast series Hotline TV with John Mercurio, which consisted of a daily show of three to seven minutes and a weekly show of 20 to 30 minutes. He became a frequent guest on political discussion shows such as Hardball with Chris Matthews and Inside Politics with Judy Woodruff.

NBC News [ edit ]

Tim Russert brought Todd to NBC from The Hotline in March 2007.[7] At that time he became political director of NBC News. In this capacity, Todd often provided on-air political analysis on political debate shows including Morning Joe, Hardball with Chris Matthews, Meet the Press, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and The Rachel Maddow Show[7], and blogged for MSNBC. com under “First Read”.[8] He also conducted a weekly question and answer (“Q&A”) session with Newsvine users. [citation required]

After Tim Russert’s death in June 2008, Todd was a candidate to replace him as host of NBC’s Meet the Press, [9] but David Gregory was eventually chosen for the job. On December 18, 2008, NBC[10] announced that Todd would succeed Gregory as NBC’s chief White House news correspondent and would work with Savannah Guthrie on the news business. He retained his title as Political Director of NBC News and was also named Contributing Editor to Meet the Press. Todd was the focus of an August 2008 Los Angeles Times article that paralleled Todd’s rise to the rise of cable news networks in reporting US politics. The article noted the emergence of Todd’s fans who are considered “Chuckolytes”. [citation required]

On July 6, 2009, former MSNBC television personality Dan Abrams launched a website service, Mediaite, that reports media metrics. The site ranks all television journalists in America by influence. Todd ranked number five, just ahead of Mike Wallace, in October 2009. Todd rose to number two on December 21, 2011, but fell to 90 on January 9, 2013. On January 11, 2010, Todd, along with Savannah Guthrie, became a co-host of The Daily Rundown on MSNBC, which aired weekday mornings 09:00: 12:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. ET. [citation required]

On August 14, 2014, NBC announced that Todd would take over as Meet the Press host starting September 7, 2014. While he remained as political director of NBC News, Todd left his role as chief White House correspondent as well as anchor of The Daily Rundown.

On July 23, 2015, MSNBC announced that Todd would be returning to the network with a daily political show called MTP Daily, which aired weekdays at 5:00 p.m. ET. The show was an extension of Meet the Press. Todd continued to host Meet the Press on NBC.

On January 22, 2017, Todd interviewed Kellyanne Conway on Meet the Press, a day after White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer accused the media of intentionally understating the crowd size at President Trump’s inauguration. In a response to Todd’s question about the claims, Conway said:

“Our spokesman Sean Spicer has alternative facts [i.e. H. Donald Trump’s initial viewership], but the point remains that…”

Todd interrupted her and said:

“Wait a minute. Alternative facts? … Alternative facts aren’t facts. They’re untruths.”[14][15]

On June 26-27, 2019, Todd co-hosted the first two Democratic Party presidential debates of 2020 along with Jose Diaz-Balart, Savannah Guthrie, Lester Holt and Rachel Maddow except for four presidential candidates, was widely panned. Todd has also been criticized for asking lengthy questions of candidates and then asking them to answer “in a word or two.”[16][17][18][19]

In a December 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Todd discussed his beliefs about how disinformation swept the media during the Trump administration.[20] Although Todd called “alternative facts” as lies in January 2017, PressThink – a project of the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University – took Todd to task for failing to address the issues as they unfolded.[21 ]

On February 11, 2020, Todd came under fire after quoting a conservative columnist during his broadcast on 2020 presidential nominee Bernie Sanders, who compared Sanders and his supporters to Nazi brown shirts:

“No other candidate has anything like a digital brown shirt brigade. I mean, except for Donald Trump. The question no one asks is what if you can’t win the presidency without an online mob?”

The comments were met with immediate backlash, with #FireChuckTodd trending on Twitter. Sanders, who is Jewish, lost many family members during the Nazi Holocaust. Neither the Sanders campaign nor MSNBC commented on the incident.[22]

Other professional ventures[edit]

Todd is an associate professor at Johns Hopkins University.[23] He is the author of The Stranger: Barack Obama in the White House. The Chicago Tribune, published in 2014, described the book as “well-founded and well-informed,” while Publishers Weekly called it “a balanced, concise, and thorough account.”[24] Todd is also a co-author, with Sheldon Gawiser, of How Barack Obama Won: A State-by-State Guide to the Historic 2008 Presidential Election, published 2009.[25] Todd selects NFL football games for Tony Kornheiser on his podcast, The Tony Kornheiser Show.[26] Each week, Todd takes on Reginald, a monkey who also chooses NFL games.

Personal life[edit]

Todd lives in Arlington, Virginia with his wife Kristian Denny Todd and their two children. She is a communications expert and co-founder of Maverick Strategies and Mail, which provides direct mail and advisory services for Democratic candidates and progressive causes.[27][28] She was the spokeswoman for Senator Jim Webb’s successful US Senate campaign in 2006.[29]

Todd received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Marymount University in recognition of his journalism work.[30] Todd is a member of Temple Rodef Shalom Reformed Church in Falls Church, Virginia.[28]

Todd is an avid football fan of the Miami Hurricanes.[31]
