Halas revealed in his autobiography that both he and his wife Minnie were expecting a boy when Minnie was pregnant with Virginia: “The initial shock was over, I was smitten with my daughter,” Halas wrote. “I immediately started nagging them with orange juice – the fad for little babies at the time – and stories about the bears.”

Ms. McCaskey attended Drexel University in Philadelphia, where she majored in business administration. There she met her future husband, who was a student at the University of Pennsylvania and also sang in a band at local dance halls.
Mrs. McCaskey married Edward McCaskey on February 2, 1943 – on her father’s 48th birthday. Mr. McCaskey soon went to Europe to fight in World War II and serve in the Army.
The McCaskeys were married for 60 years until Ed died on April 8, 2003 at the age of 83. As devout Catholics, they raised 11 children. Four of their eight sons currently work full-time for the Bears: George (Chairman), Patrick (Vice President), Brian (Vice President) and Rich (Administration).
The McCaskeys’ eldest child, Michael, served as President of the Bears from 1982 to 1999 and as Chairman from 1999 until his retirement in 2011. Michael died on May 16 at the age of 76. The McCaskeys’ second oldest child, Tim, served as Bear’s vice president from 1993 until his death on January 30, 2011.

McCaskey, the eighth-eldest child of Bears owner Virginia Halas McCaskey and Ed McCaskey (who was himself a former Bears chairman), was originally an assistant district attorney for Lee and DeKalb counties. McCaskey also worked in television, after receiving his bachelor’s degree (1978) from Arizona State University and a Juris Doctor[3] degree (1981) from Arizona State University College of Law, and was a reporter for an NBC affiliate in Peoria ][4] He was the team’s Bears senior director of ticket operations since the 1991 season and has served on the team’s board of directors since 2004.
In 2011, during the NFL lockout, McCaskey’s brother Michael retired after 12 years as the club’s chairman. Before assuming his position, he met with Chicago Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz and White Sox and Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf. Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys was the first NFL owner he met. Reflecting on meeting Jones, McCaskey commented, “He was very gracious, very accommodating. He’s a fascinating guy. I really enjoyed visiting and getting to know him. We sat in a suite at Cowboys Stadium and faced the field. We then went downstairs and bumped into a tour group. As soon as they saw who he was, they went nuts. They took pictures and he talked to them.”[2]
McCaskey is the second most senior figure in the Bears organization after his mother, Virginia, and reports to team president and CEO Ted Phillips.[7] While the President oversees structural changes such as hiring and firing the CEO, ownership provides input; McCaskey stated in 2012, shortly after General Manager Jerry Angelo’s departure, that he “felt no particular need to put a personal stamp on the Bears, that it was my job to work with and support the President and CEO”.
