Clyde Edwards-Helaire is an American football runner for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at LSU and was drafted by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Edwards-Helaire grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire is no bust
When the Kansas City Chiefs selected former LSU runner Clyde-Edwards Helaire in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft, the choice was immediately controversial.
Part of that came from the team’s decision to pick a running back in the first round, which some draft observers find to be a terrible idea.
Some of that came as a result of the revelation that Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes had played a role in his selection — and that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid saw a parallel between Edwards-Helaire and All-Pro running back Brian Westbrook saw Reid drafted in 2002 for the Philadelphia Eagles.
After missing time with injuries in each of his first two seasons, controversy surrounding the running back continued to mount. He appeared in just 23 games and mustered 1,320 yards (and eight touchdowns) on 300 carries and 426 yards (and three other TDs) on 55 receptions.
Worse, Edwards-Helaire’s first two career fumbles proved very costly. The first came at the Baltimore Ravens 32-yard line with just 1:24 left as Kansas City trailed Baltimore 36-35 in Week 2 of 2021. Just a week later, in the second quarter, he fumbled at the 36-yard line blunting a Chiefs drive (and leading to a Chargers touchdown) that could have been the difference in Kansas City’s 30-24 loss.
Now, two years into his NFL career, a very ugly word is beginning to be associated with Edward-Helaire’s name: bust.
Is it deserved? Just take a look.
The first round running back problem
It’s a belief of many draft experts that picking a running back in the first round doesn’t pay off. The argument is that because a running back offers so little value, using a valuable first-round pick to acquire one is a waste of resources.
But there is not much evidence that this is actually true. In a recent project to create a more relevant draft pick value chart, I collected data for all players drafted between 1989 and 2016. On average, drafted running backs provided the drafting team with an approximate AV of 11.6. That was fifth behind offensive linemen (14.5), defensive linemen (12.9), linebackers (12.7), and quarterbacks (12.1) — and ahead of wide receivers (10.5), defensive backs (10.1 ), tight ends (6.3), and fullbacks (4.0). ).
While you may not find this convincing, it’s very clear that NFL general managers don’t believe in avoiding running backs in the first round. The percentage of RBs included in each round of the draft from 1989 to 2016 varies by only 1.8%. That’s the smallest variation for any offensive or defensive position — and dwarfed by the number for quarterbacks (10.7%).
Also…the no-running-backs-in-the-first-round argument is essentially based around the idea that the draft is an end in itself — as if GMs are paid more for using their draft picks more efficiently than others.
But a GM’s job isn’t to “win the draft.” Instead, a high-quality roster should be created. Being on the clock means you take the player who gives you the best chance – given the circumstances – of achieving that goal. Aside from how it relates to your team’s needs, the position they play shouldn’t even matter.
The Patrick Mahomes Edition
This part of the Edwards-Helaire controversy seems to stem from a remark Reid made right after his selection to running back.
“We asked Pat Mahomes, ‘Who do you want?’ and he picked you,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said with a smile on a video call to Edwards-Helaire. “How great is that? You better be ready to go.”
But in the same call, General Manager Brett Veach explained what really happened.
“Clyde, I was telling Clark (Hunt) and Coach Reid [Thursday] that Clyde would be our choice around 4pm because Coach and I were thinking your way and then when we texted Pat I did Pat asked. I said, “Give me a name,” and I said, “Don’t think about it.” And he said, “Clyde.” And I said, “Well, fine. Good.’ We’re excited man.”
This makes it clear that Reid and Veach had already made up their minds about the LSU star before contacting Mahomes. Reid’s comment was purely meant to cheer his new running back on at the prospect of playing with the reigning Super Bowl MVP.
The Brian Westbrook Edition
After Edwards-Helaire’s first two seasons in the league, the comparison to the former Eagles running back has to ring a little hollow. But it’s probably more appropriate than you think.
In the third round (91st overall), Westbrook played sparingly in his first two seasons, piling up 806 yards (and seven touchdowns) on 163 attempts in 30 games (including just 11 starts), averaging 4.9 yards per attempt. He also had 418 yards (and four TDs) on 46 receptions – while accumulating five fumbles.
In the first two years of his career, Edwards-Helaire actually produced more than Westbook in fewer games – and also made less sales.
It wasn’t until his third season that Westbrook became a regular starter. In 2004, he made his first Pro Bowl with 1,515 yards from scrimmage (and nine touchdowns) in 12 starts over 13 games and amassed almost half of that in receiving yards.
In that third season, Westbrook caught 83.9% of his targets. In 2021, Edwards-Helaire was a reliable pass catcher, collecting 82.6% of balls thrown at him. The difference is that in his third season, half of Westbrook’s touches came on passing plays — while in 2021, only about one in six of Edwards-Helaire’s games were passing goals.
Given the team’s off-season changes, it’s not too unlikely that Edwards-Helaire could see such a target spread in 2022 – and as long as he stays healthy, he could match the numbers Westbrook achieved from 2004 onwards.
The theme of disappointment
But for Edwards-Helaire, that qualifier “as long as he stays healthy” was the main problem. Projected over an entire season, the running back may have earned more than 1,300 yards in scrimmage (including nearly 1,000 rushing yards) in his rookie season, along with roughly 1,100 yards (including nearly 900 yards on the ground) in his sophomore year.
Even with first-round expectations (which may not be fair but are still part of NFL life), few fans (or analysts) likely would have quarreled much with this production — especially on a Reid offense with Mahomes in the middle . It’s just that it didn’t happen – and the two costly fumbles in weeks 2 and 3 of last season did happen.
Up to this point in his career, it’s perfectly reasonable to be disappointed with what we’ve seen of Edwards-Helaire.
But that doesn’t make him a bust.
Despite a disappointing career arc so far, Edwards-Helaire has given the Chiefs a 13 AV. An AV of 4 in any given year is average—so it’s significantly higher in two seasons.
As I noted in a comment Friday, 18 running backs were selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. Only three of them — Jonathan Taylor (27), Antonio Gibson (14), and D’Andre Swift (13) — have an AV score of (or higher) Edwards-Helaire over those two seasons. AJ Dillion has an AV score of 11, Zack Moss has an 8, and J.K. Dobbins has 7. The 11 remaining defenders have an AV score less than a third of Edwards-Helaires.
None of that should mitigate our disappointment with his injury history — or the way the Chiefs may not have used him the way he could (or should) have. But the team still has two full seasons to figure out a way to do better by starting running back — and if Taylor, Gibson and Swift call for new contracts after their fourth season, the Chiefs could get a fifth from Edwards- Helaires get rookie deal.
Other backs included in the same design have delivered more production – and the former LSU back certainly didn’t live up to our expectations. But that could still happen — and even if it doesn’t, it still won’t be broke.
