Having worked on television news for nearly two decades, she has found time and time again that life always comes with a few curveballs. She got divorced last year and moved away from her hometown of Chicago to take on a new role as a presenter for News 5 Cleveland.
Survival Instinct: Gousman is nothing if not resilient. At 15, her mother died giving birth to her brother, leading to several turbulent years during which Gousman realized that she eventually wanted to leave home for college abroad. “Anytime you lose a loved one, especially someone like a mother, who is really the foundation of your family and the fortress that holds everything down, when you lose someone so important, it just tears everything down.”
Rooted history: Gousman was drawn to apply to Hampton University, a historically African-American college in Virginia, where she was part of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the first black Greek sorority in the country. “It’s not like I can trace my roots back and say I’m from South Africa or Ghana because African Americans have a hard, hard way of tracing our ancestry. So I just wanted to know more about who I am as a black person.”
Turning point: In 2014, Gousman reported on the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by Chicago police. As the evening news anchor for WGN-TV, telling the story was a challenge as it uncovered the city government’s response to the high schooler’s death. “That was the impetus for change in Chicago on many levels. That was a very, very lively time for me.”
Basic Truths: In her 17 years in the media, Gousman has covered pivotal stories like the D.C. sniper trial. and Sandra Bland, who was arrested at a traffic stop and later found dead in her cell. “As a member of the media, one is told, taught, and trained not to have an opinion, or sometimes not to speak up. What are some unexpected things you’ve learned about yourself in the past year?
The pandemic has helped me go into solitude. I know that if it weren’t for the pandemic, if we weren’t in quarantine and lockdown, I wouldn’t have had time to sit down and pull myself together in the midst of all the changes.
