She said she couldn’t wait any longer and within five minutes the baby was out
Detroit Red Wings star Darren Helm wanted to get some sleep Sunday night after an impressive overtime win for his team.
It wasn’t to be, however, because just after midnight his girlfriend, Devon Englot, informed him that she was in labour.
And this was a quick delivery, so quick that the two didn’t make it to the hospital in time and Helm had to get up to drop his daughter Rylee in the back of his car.

The Red Wings report that Helm began packing up their things when he received word the baby was coming and called the hospital from home while he was loading the car.
However, Englot, who is also a mother to another child, the couple’s 3-year-old daughter Reece, was starting to feel things were moving a little too quickly.
“Devon kept saying she felt the urge to push,” Helm said.
And Helm saw what that meant.
“They said when the baby is ready, the baby is ready. She doesn’t really have much control over it. We tried to make it there. She tried to hold them back,’ he said.
“They always told us that the second would come sooner, but we didn’t expect it to be that quick.”
Mum, dad and big sister are doing well now
The couple were a mile from Providence Park Hospital in Novi, Michigan when Helm climbed into the back seat and delivered their baby.
“It happened so quickly. We thought we had plenty of time to get to the hospital and things just took a turn and the baby was ready to come out to say hello and she did,” he explained.
Five minutes later they were on their way to the hospital again with their new passenger.
“We came into the ER and they kept reassuring us that everything would be fine after they took a good look at the baby and Devon was fine,” Helm said.

DETROIT – Every time Darren Helm drives past the mile marker 160 near the Beck Road exit on Interstate 96, he is reminded of the time his youngest daughter entered the world in a unique way.
Rylee Klaire Helm weighed six pounds, 10 ounces when she made her extraordinary debut in the back seat of her father’s black four-door Audi at 2:15 a.m. Monday morning.
“I don’t think I’ve been more nervous and anxious in my life,” said the Red Wings forward. “It wasn’t until after that that I really had a chance to think about it. … I was petrified. But in the end it worked out great.”
Sunday night got off to a relatively quiet start for Helm, his longtime girlfriend Devon Englot and their 3 1/2 year old daughter Reece.
Understandably tired from Sunday’s thrilling overtime win against St. Louis, Helm went to bed early. Sometime after midnight, however, he was woken up by Devon telling him the baby was due – around eight days before the March 31 due date.
“Pretty tired from the game and she kind of woke me up and told me things were kind of happening but not really fast,” Helm said. “So we took our time.”
Helm called Providence Park Hospital in Novi to let staff know the couple was on the way. Then, as he gathered some necessities and began helping Devon into the back seat of the car, the situation took a drastic turn.
Things escalated and Helm’s only thought was to get Devon to the hospital quickly before the baby was born.
“Devon kept saying that she felt the urge to push,” Helm said. “They said when the baby is ready, the baby is ready. She doesn’t really have much control over it. We tried to make it there. She tried to hold them back.
“They always told us that the second would come sooner, but we didn’t expect it to be that quick.”
When the hospital was about 20 miles from his home, Helm was speeding down the freeway, his nerves frayed and his girlfriend screaming in pain as her contractions were now longer, closer together and more extreme. It was the most harrowing moment of his 28-year life.
“By far, I mean, you have a woman behind you screaming, ‘Get me to the hospital!’ and screaming for the baby to come out,” Helm said. “It was pretty intense.”
The baby didn’t wait a minute longer before his head appeared.
About a mile from the hospital, a frantic helmet steered the car to the shoulder of the freeway, where Devon did the rest.
“It happened so quickly,” said Helm. “We thought we had plenty of time to get to the hospital and things just took a turn and the baby was ready to come out to say hello and she did.”
When asked if he was involved in the delivery, Helm said, “No. It was all herself. Only I was in the car with her and she could take care of business. It’s very remarkable and incredible.
“I was just trying to get to the hospital as quickly as possible.”
Helm estimates the couple were on the side of I-96 for maybe five minutes before he took Mother and her newborn daughter to the hospital.

“We came into the ER and they kept reassuring us that everything would be fine after they took a good look at the baby and Devon was fine,” he said. “Things slowly calmed down after that. It took us a while to get over what happened, but things are going pretty well.
“It’s just a huge relief. Five minutes late to the hospital, it could have been a lot worse, but luckily, luckily, everything turned out fine for us. We couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out and now that we think about it, we have quite a fun story.”
Helm’s teammates and coaches knew he’d become a father for the second time, but they didn’t know the details until Tuesday morning.
“Can you imagine that?” Coach Mike Babcock asked rhetorically. “He was great. He told the story today. We basically had a family program all year before home games where boys are present. He’s already done it, but he sat down today and presented the story and the boys loved it and it was a lot of fun to hear him talk.”
Helm will play tonight when the Red Wings host the Arizona Coyotes at Joe Louis Arena. Until then, he hopes to be able to fully concentrate on the game again.
“Yeah, I definitely haven’t been thinking about hockey lately (during) that time,” he said. “My thoughts are definitely with her and coming home today. It will be her first time at home. Only everyone is so happy. It’s such a great feeling. Really proud of Devon and what she has done. Even my daughter, my older daughter, she’s just so happy and excited to be a big sister.”
