Trejo’s film career began in 1985 when he accidentally landed in the American indie film Runaway Train, where he played the role of a boxer for a daily fee of $320. Trejo was born on May 16, 1944 on Temple Street in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California to Mexican-American parents. He is the son of Delores Rivera King[5] and Dionisio “Dan” Trejo (1922–1981),[6] a construction worker. Trejo was the result of an extramarital affair; Delores’ husband fought in World War II.[7] His parents met in 1943 at a dance hall in Highland Park, Los Angeles.[8] He had a maternal half-sister, Dyhan, but did not see her or Delores from the age of three and a half until 1965; his father forbade his mother to see him after Trejo sprained his arm in her care.[7]
Trejo was often abused by his father. Shortly after his birth, Trejo and his family lived briefly in San Antonio, Texas; They fled Los Angeles because Dionisio was wanted by the police for stabbing another man. After a year they returned to Los Angeles and Trejo’s father turned himself in.[8] In 1949, Trejo shared a room with his cousins in their grandmother’s house.[9] His stepmother was Alice Mendias, “his only source of comfort” when he lived with his father.[10][11][12]
Trejo used marijuana, heroin and cocaine between the ages of 8 and 12. [13][14][15] Trejo’s uncle Gilbert introduced him to all three and was responsible for Trejo’s overdose from his first shot of heroin.[8] He moved to the diverse Pacoima neighborhood of Los Angeles when he was 13 years old and recalls never experiencing racism growing up. Years later he bought his childhood home and lived in it often.[16]
Living in crime and imprisonment[edit]
At the age of seven Trejo participated in his first drug deal.[17] He was first arrested at the age of 10,[18] but experienced his first incarceration at Eastlake Juvenile Hall in 1956.[18]
In the 1960s, Trejo’s life consisted mostly of stints in the California prison system. However, accounts of his prison chronology are particularly contradictory; His final term was reported to have ended in 1972,[4] but in reality Trejo served time in various juvenile delinquent camps,[20] including three years at Camp Glenn Rockey, San Dimas, for mutilating a sailor (stabbing him with broken glass in the face),[21][22] followed by numerous California prisons between 1959 and 1969; “I’ve been to San Quentin, Folsom, Soledad, Vacaville, Susanville, Sierra”.[13]
In 1961, while working at the Los Angeles County Penitentiary, he met Charles Manson, whom he described as a “filthy, greasy, scrawny white boy” who was said to be a talented hypnotist.[23]
Trejo arrived at San Quentin State Prison in 1966 and his heroin use worsened shortly thereafter.[24] In addition, he was a debt collector and drug dealer who often participated in or witnessed serious acts of violence, including murder.[25][26] At the same time, he focused on boxing[24] and became the San Quentin Lightweight and Welterweight Champion.[4]
Speaking about himself, Trejo has hinted that his physical appearance has contributed to him constantly getting into trouble. In 1968, during Cinco de Mayo, a prison riot broke out in Soledad. Trejo ended up in solitary confinement and faced the death penalty after hitting a guard with a rock. In solitary confinement, Trejo found faith [28] [6] and became a member of a 12-step program after first attending one at age 15 “accidentally” and successfully overcoming his drug addiction. recalled in 2011 that he had been sober for the past 42 years. He also obtained his high school diploma during his incarceration.[29][13]
In July 1969, Trejo was released from prison for the last time and returned to Pacoima, Los Angeles after serving five years of a 10-year sentence. Prior to his film career, Trejo worked as a work foreman for developer Saul Pick and helped build the Cinerama Dome.[31] He was also a gardener and a seller; Co-owner of a lawn care business and substance abuse consultant since 1973.[32][33][34]

1980s: Acting debut[ edit ]
Trejo worked with Western Pacific Med Corp in the 1980s, assisting in the establishment and operation of sober living homes in the San Fernando Valley.[36] During a meeting in one such house, he met a “handsome tattooed boy” who explained that he worked as a film extra and was paid $50 a day to stand there. Intrigued, Trejo considered becoming a film extra, initially due to the easy money and publicity his work at Western Pacific Med Corp. would bring. could afford. Trejo signed with an agent and gave out his dates while working on film sets, hoping to find more ways to help those in need. Late one night, Trejo received a call from a teenage patient asking for his help coping with cocaine problems on the set of Runaway Train (1985).[37][4][38]
There, Trejo was offered a job as an extra in the film’s prison scenes. Edward Bunker, himself an ex-convict and at the time a respected crime writer who wrote the screenplay for the film, recognized Trejo, with whom he had spent time in San Quentin. Remembering Trejo’s boxing skills, Bunker played a crucial role in securing Trejo as Eric Roberts’ personal trainer and boxing advisor. Trejo was paid between $320 and $350 a day; “When I got my first paycheck, I thought they made a mistake!” [39] [40] Bunker also convinced director Andrei Konchalovsky to offer Trejo a small acting role, claiming that Trejo’s personal experiences of incarceration lend authenticity to the prison drama .[41] After his acting debut, Trejo was unaware that he had been typecast as a prisoner in similar roles for years; “I [didn’t know] that I was being stereotyped. All I knew was that I was working.”[42]
Penitentiary III was his first billed role. During filming he met Anthony Gambino of the Gambino Crime Family; Gambino reportedly had financial interests invested and was there to meet leading man Leon Isaac Kennedy. Trejo received $120 in cash each day, but the project often went into overtime; “We were full of cash.”[43] In a good month through 1989, Trejo took home as much as $700 for being the sole extra; Still, people often assumed that he was much wealthier after a few appearances on television. Trejo says this was to his advantage as a drug counselor because clients recognized him as an actor and therefore appreciated his presence and the humility of his work all the more.[44]

By 1990 Trejo had made a dozen films including Death Wish 4: The Crackdown and Marked for Death. He enjoyed making Guns,[45] but claims Erik Estrada struggled with the fact that the cast and crew were more familiar with Trejo than he was himself. Trejo says Estrada’s ego defeated him; he believes that Estrada arranged for Trejo and a number of others to travel to Hawaii for filming by bus instead of first class.[46]
In 1991, Edward James Olmos originally offered him the role of Pedro Santana in American Me.[47] Trejo was unimpressed by the script and his first meeting with Olmos. Trejo claims there were rumors circulating within the Mexican mafia that the script was taking narrative liberties. Before Trejo had a chance to attend a second meeting with Olmos, he received a call from Joe ‘Peg Leg’ Morgan, the then-resident don of the Mexican mafia; Morgan approved of his choice of a role in Blood In, Blood Out instead of American Me. In 2021, Trejo stated that he believes Olmos has yet to accept him as a serious actor.
From his experience with Blood In, Blood Out, Trejo recalls feeling uncomfortable around many other actors during rehearsals as they were more established.[49] During production at San Quentin, Trejo often had flashbacks to his time there; Filming in C550, his former cell, only reinforced such feelings.[50] Although his earlier work brought him opportunities, Trejo credits Blood In, Blood Out with bringing him “legitimate, worldwide fame”.[51]
Trejo found a new talent agent with the help of Raymond Cruz. He was first cast in an episode of Baywatch, followed by a role in Last Light, Kiefer Sutherland’s directorial debut, in 1993.[52]
Heat went through two script revisions while Trejo read for the role. He eventually secured the role, which reunited him with Michael Mann, who directed him a few years earlier in the television miniseries Drug Wars: The Camarena Story. Mann initially confused Trejo with his uncle Gilbert; he found the resemblance uncanny, having met Gilbert while filming The Jericho Mile in Folsom in the late 1970s; The production required inmate cooperation, and Gilbert happened to be one of the leaders. Trejo’s character in the film was originally named Vince but was renamed Trejo in honor of Gilbert. In 1996, Trejo was cast in the French production Le Jaguar (which was French for The Jaguar) and reunited with Voight for Anaconda, both filmed in Manaus, Brazil. After closing Animal Factory in 1999, he contracted hepatitis C and “had to drag [his] ass” from Canada to Austin, Texas to begin filming Spy Kids in 2000. Spy Kids marked Trejo’s debut as the fictional character Isador “Machete” Cortez. Her parents did not approve of their relationship and they married in the backyard of Trejo’s family home.[88] Trejo believes his drug use and criminal lifestyle contributed to the breakdown of their marriage; Laura filed for divorce during his second childbirth at Youth Training School.[88]
He was married to Debbie from 1971 to 1975,[89][90] and to Joanne from 1975 to 1978.[91]
Trejo has three children: Danny (born 1981), actor and director Gilbert (born 1988), and actress Danielle (born 1990).[79][92] His eldest child, nicknamed “Danny Boy”, is from a relationship with Diana Walton;[93][94] they were together from 1978 to 1983.[95][96] His last two children are from a relationship with Maeve Crommie.[97] They were together from 1986 to 1997,[98] and he also helped her raise her two sons from a later relationship.[32][99]

While filming Blood In, Blood Out in San Quentin, Trejo met Mario Castillo, a prisoner addicted to drugs. How Danny Trejo’s criminal past helped him become a Hollywood star
In 1993, actor Danny Trejo went through San Quentin State Prison where he shot scenes for the movie Blood In, Blood Out.
The cast and crew pulled up in front of cells C545 to C550, which were cordoned off for filming, and suddenly Trejo felt an eerie feeling of déjà vu.
“As we climbed the stairs to the set, my heart beat faster with every step,” Trejo writes in his new memoir, Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood (Atria Books), available now.
“When we reached the flight between the fourth and fifth levels, I stopped. I stood on the same steps where [fellow prisoner] Tyrone stabbed the man who was trying to kill me.”
C550 was his former cell, his home from 1966 to 1968 because he was selling heroin to an undercover cop.
After rehearsing the scene, Trejo entered C550 with another ex-con on set and said a prayer.
“We got on our knees and thanked God for our freedom from drugs and alcohol, our freedom from prison, and we thanked Him for our children and our lives,” writes Trejo.

Trejo, with over 300 film and television roles to his credit, is best known to audiences for his roles in Spy Kids, Breaking Bad and Machete, which launched him as the first Chicano action star.
But Trejo, 77, had an unlikely path to stardom. A heroin user by age 12 and a dealer by 13, Trejo spent most of 1956-1969 in prisons such as San Quentin and Folsom for a variety of crimes, including drug trafficking and armed robbery. From his prison tattoos to his world-weary looks, he comes across as more of a bouncer you never want to mess with than a kid-friendly action star.

After finding God and sobriety in 1968, Trejo became a recovery advocate, founded rehab centers, and gave his phone number to every addict he met so he could help them break free from the nightmare of addiction.
Then, in 1985, he received a request from an addict that would change his own life.
The call came from a man who said he worked on the set of the movie Runaway Train, where cocaine was plentiful and he feared he would start using again.
Trejo dropped everything and went to the set. He never found the man and suspects he relapsed before Trejo arrived.
But when he got there, an assistant director spotted Trejo’s harsh look and asked if he wanted to play an extra role as a convict. Trejo accepted and soon discovered that one of the film’s screenwriters, Eddie Bunker, was a “career criminal” from whom Trejo and his uncle had bought plans for a 1962 heist.
Bunker asked if Trejo, who boxed in prison, was still fighting. Actor Eric Roberts played a boxer in the film and needed training, a job that made $320 a day.
Trejo went to work and was quickly upgraded to become Robert’s on-screen opponent. With acting, Trejo found a well-paying job that seemed incredibly natural.

“Acting was nothing new to me,” writes Trejo. “I acted to survive my childhood. I had pretended not to be scared when I was scared. At Folsom, I acted to keep my sanity. Now that I was doing it for fun, I loved acting. I loved the feeling. Like a new drug, I was addicted.”
Throughout his career, his tough personality helped him in unexpected ways.
On the set of 1987’s “Death Wish 4,” a veteran character actor named Perry Lopez, “a legend among Latino actors,” Trejo writes, guided the actors through a scene.
A younger actor disagreed, telling Lopez, “Who the hell made you director?”
“Perry looked like he’d been hit,” Trejo writes. “I snapped. I said, ‘I did, motherf-ker. Do as he says or I’ll beat you to death.'”
At that very moment, Trejo felt someone hovering behind him. The film’s star, Charles Bronson, had heard the exchange.
“Bronson looked at me again and said, ‘I hear you’re some kind of drug counselor.'”
Trejo replied that it was him and Bronson smiled.
“I like the way you advise,” he said.
On the set of the 1993 prison film Last Light, director Kiefer Sutherland cast a friend who ended up like a loose cannon, fired and escorted off the set.
About a week later, Trejo noticed something was troubling Sutherland. The director admitted that the actor who was fired threatened him and his children.
“I was an actor, but I was also seen as a bit of a fixer,” writes Trejo. “When people had problems that they felt had no legal solution, they turned to me for advice and help. I told Kiefer not to worry.”

Trejo and a friend visited the man, who said he was upset because Sutherland had hinted the role would earn him a SAG card that would get him access to the Screen Actors Guild, and that opportunity was now gone.
“I tried to be diplomatic,” writes Trejo. “I said, ‘Maybe the map didn’t work here. But if you don’t cut it out, someone might stick an M-80 up your ass and set it on fire.’”
The next day, the man sent flowers to Sutherland and apologized to his wife.
Trejo’s career has also been filled with poignant moments. While filming “Muppets Most Wanted” in London in 2013, he and Ray played Liotta as convicts who sang and danced while prison warden Tina Fey gave Kermit the frog a tour of the facility.
On the set, Trejo learned that his mother had died.
“Right before we started filming, Steve Whitmire, the puppeteer who played Kermit, held the puppet close to my face and said, ‘I’m so sorry your mommy died Danny,'” Trejo writes.

“There’s a rule Steve adhered to that when working with the Muppets, you have to stay in character. Steve was sincere. Kermit was sincere. He grimaced his little face and this doll showed so much emotion it cut through all the layers of pain I was holding on to. I ran off the set. . . and burst into tears. To this day, I still believe my mother asked Kermit to say something.”
Trejo has also been a regular in director Robert Rodriguez’s films. The role of Uncle Machete in Rodriguez’s Spy Kids made him recognizable to children around the world and changed his image in ways he loved.
“With ‘Spy Kids’ I went from being a bad guy, a Mexican cliché, to someone that kids can look up to overnight,” writes Trejo, who is divorced and has three grown children. “Over the years I’ve probably heard, in forty different languages, ‘Look mommy, that’s the guy from Spy Kids’.”
Machete, an adult extension of his Spy Kids role, brought him critical acclaim for the first time and marked the culmination of a life that took him from childhood heroin dealer to hardened convict to Hollywood stardom.
On his first day on set, he climbed out of his trailer and saw co-star Robert De Niro.
“He smiled that world famous smile and pointed at me,” writes Trejo.
“Number one on the call list!” De Niro said of the film’s prioritized cast list.
“When Robert pointed at me and made a number one with his finger, he said I was the captain on this one and gave me his blessing,” writes Trejo.
“I bowed. ‘Mister. De Niro, sir, can I get you a cup of coffee?'”
DeNiro laughed.
“Let’s both get one,” he said.
