Village in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Maini[1] (known locally as Menai, Pashto: مینئ and Urdu: مینی) is the name of a village (now a city) and a union council and a lush green physiographic valley with natural streams and fertile farmland located in Topi Tehsil in the eastern part of Swabi District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan. It has a very detailed historical profile, from the early historical period to the partition of Pakistan. Maini is located at 34°07’07.23″ north latitude and 72°36’32.38″ east longitude with an altitude of about 383 meters above sea level. The total area of the Maini Valley is about 5 kilometers from east to west and 6 kilometers from north to south.[2][3]

The population of Maini now exceeds 80,000 (not according to government census). It is considered to be one of the highly educated areas of Topi Tehsil, where there are about 25 state primary schools, one state high school for boys, one state high school for girls, one state college (Sahibzada Muhammad Khurshid Memorial College), private girls high school and more than two dozen private ones elementary and high schools. These institutions have produced highly qualified employees for the country who serve the nation in various departments of the public sector and also in the private sector. The majority of the Maini population also helps the country with foreign exchange income; where they serve the Gulf and European countries in this regard.

On the other hand, basic health facilities are provided in the government’s Basic Health Unit, while a dozen small private medical units are also found. With these basic and urgent needs, Maini also offers good opportunities for the sports facilities. There is an official sports field called Cheeno that the government is very interested in developing, but a case has been filed with the court that has made it controversial. Most of the population plays cricket, football, badminton, volleyball and kabaddi, while the local game of mukhka/makha is also only played in the summer.

Geography[ edit ]

Maini is 17 kilometers east of Swabi City, 5 kilometers north of Topi City and 2 kilometers west of Gadoon Amazai Industrial Zone.[4] The main Swabi-Topi road provides a connection near the village of Kotha, which runs northbound and takes 5 kilometers to reach the village of Maini. This road is also an ancient trail that then runs north from Maini, passes through Jhanda village and extends to Buner district. On the three sides, Maini is bounded by hills, while the southern plain offers a flowing route to a mountain stream (Wuch Khwar), a river (Kundal River), and a natural spring (Cheena) that flow through its heart, irrigating the river to the south Fields.

Map of the district of Swabia (shows Maini in yellow)

Maini lies in the southern foothills of the 2225 meter high Mahābaṇ mountain range[5], while the Ajumair Hill lies to the west and the barren Gadoon Hills lie to the east, blocking the waters of the Tarbela Dam. All of these mountains are Piedmont zones and a tentative division between the smaller Himalayas and the Hindu Kush (Dani 2001:13).

Topi is to the south (precisely south-southeast), Kotha village is to the true south, Baja & Bamkhel is to the south-west, bounded by Ajumair Hill to the west, Boko & Jhanda is to the north-northwest, Pabini is to the north, Malakabad (ancient Malka -kadai) is to the north-northeast, Beesak is to the northeast, Gadoon-Amazai Industries is to the east, and Gadoon Afghan refugee camp is to the southeast.

Subdivisions[ edit ]

The village of Maini includes numerous subdivisions locally called tapas or mohallahs. Originally, the tapas were established in the time of Sheikh Mali Baba between the years 1500-1550 when the newly acquired land was distributed among the families. These tapas were as follows:

Sheikh Mali Khel Mani Khel Said Ali Khel Khadhar Khan Khel Khadhar Khan Khel (Ghari) Niki Khedad UR Ibrahim Habib Khel Arab Zai Juna Khel Gulbahar 1 Gulbahar 2 Redawan (U.S.R) Qadarman Zalmi Chowk Ismail Abad

As the population grew and people moved from the center of the Maini to the surrounding area, new mohallahs were established for administrative purposes only. These newly formed Mohallahs were usually a mix of the Tapas people. Some of the Mohallah are Qāsim Abād, Patyā (Fāteha), Tulkū, Gulbahār-1 and 2, Shīngrai, Kutkānṛe, Gaṛhai, Poray (Faqir) Kalay, Jāṛe (Gulistān), Sūlai, Raidawan, Rahīma, Hāji Khel (Miagan), Kambaray , Shakrai, Soganday and Kass (Tsarina Abad).

name [edit]

As for the nomenclature of the name Maini, most local elders believe that it derives from the name of a certain non-Muslim Queen Mainamati (erroneously called Mainawati by the locals). The story mentions Queen Mainamati as the wife of Manikachandra of the Candra dynasty who ruled in the 10th-11th centuries. Century AD ruled in Bengal. While some of the modern authors hold that the term Maini may come from the name of a group of passerine birds commonly Myna or Mynah. However, thorough research is required to look up the term Maini in the Sanskrit and Prakrit languages. Zafar Hayat Khan from the University of Peshawar’s Department of Archeology shows great interest and tries his best to solve the problem of the term Maini.

Languages, people and religion[ edit ]

Pashto is the main language spoken in a specific dialect. Urdu is also spoken and understood as a national language. The people mainly belong to the Mandanr Utman tribe, the specific branch/lineage of the Yusufzai clan. While the religious background of the entire population is Sunni. However, prior to the partition of Pakistan and India in 1947, the Hindu community lived side-by-side with the Muslim community, known as the business-class Hindus.

Climate [ edit ]

Maini is characterized by a semi-arid climate with very hot summers and cold winters. Winter begins in mid-November and ends in late March, while the summer months last from May to September. The average maximum summer temperature exceeds 40 °C (104 °F) during the hottest month and the average minimum temperature is 23 °C (73 °F). The mean minimum temperature in winter is 2 °C (36 °F), while the maximum is 17 °C (63 °F). It rains here in both winter and summer as it is a monsoon region that falls under both the Malakand and Hazara zonal rainy regions. Due to westerly disturbances, winter precipitation shows a higher record between the months of February and April. Wind speeds vary throughout the year, from 5 knots (5.8 mph; 9.3 km/h) in December to 24 knots (28 mph; 44 km/h) in June. The relative humidity varies between 46% in June and 76% in August. The highest temperature of 50 °C (122 °F) was recorded in June 1995, while the lowest temperature of −3.9 °C (25.0 °F) occurred in January 1970.

Natural hills[ edit ]

Deelor Dherai is located in the north of Maini, separating it from Pabini while preventing the Kundal River from entering the Gulbahar populated area. One can approach this hill via the Deelor/Kundal route, which leads from Gulbahar-1 to the village of Pabini.

Salo Dherai and Shado Dherai are located in the northwest of Maini, which can be considered as the northern part of Ajumair Hill. These natural hills are a division between Jhanda and Maini and can be accessed from Qasim Abad via the Jhanda road.

Ajumair hill is the highest and largest among all natural hills covering the entire western border of Maini. It naturally separates Maini from the villages of Baja and Bamkhel and is accessible via Gulbahar-1, Garhai and Kutkanre via the Dundhery and Jabay routes.

Banr Dherai, another low hill, is within Maini but in its southwestern territory. It separates the two Mohallahs of Maini, one Kutkanre on the north and the other Soganday on the south. It is accessible via the Kutkanre-Baja route and via Soganday.

Rahima Dherai also lives in the settled area of the village, which is just east of Banr Dherai. One can access this low hill through Najeem Jare and through Mohallah Rahima.

Sulai Dherai is located in the densely populated area of Maini, now mostly covered by modern houses. It is located in the south central part of the village which can be reached from Raidawan, Shalizara and Sulai Mohallahs.

Ajumair hill view

Muradu Dherai is a low hill which is located next to Cheeno sports field on the bank of Kundal River and offers a scenic view for sports lovers. It is located in the southeast of Maini, which can be reached via the Karpa Route and the modern Pehur High Level Canal.

Loye Salay, Boos-Dhery and Tor-Batai are other natural hills located immediately in the eastern settled area and in the Gulf of Poray (Faqir) Kalay Mohallah resides. Two of them block the water of the Kundal River and separate the village’s eastern agricultural land from the populated area. These can be reached via the Karpa route, the Poray Kaly route and the Tor-batai route.

Ghundhery is in the center of the village, looks like an ancient stupa and is a low hill now covered on all sides by modern houses.

Khazana Dherai and Patya Dherai lie in the north-northeast of Maini, the natural division between Mohallah Patya and Chatya. Khazana Dherai can be seen as a natural blockage of the Kundal flow that does not let the water reach the Chatya wand. These two hills are accessible via Chatya route and Patya route.

history [edit]

As for the ancient cultural profile of this part of the world, we don’t know much about the prehistoric and protohistoric periods. There may be several archaeological sites that show traces of human habitation before the second millennium BC. B.C., but this requires thorough and methodical archaeological excavation. The earliest evidence we have so far is the arrival of Achaemenian (Persian Zoroaster), evident by their Seglois.

Achamenid rule[ edit ]

The historical profile of this country can be traced back to the times of the Achaemenians (Persians of the 6th to 4th centuries BC). The Achaemenid Empire in the Swabi region is evident in the historical literature, where the writer Qureshi (1967:83) says: “The districts west of the Indus River to the Kabul River were checked by the Astacenians and Assacenians, who paid tribute to the Achaemenian king paid, Cyrus, who lived from 558 to 530 BC. Astacenians were the Ashtak, a confederation of eight tribes in the Peshawar region, and Assacenians were the Ashvakas (commonly identified with modern Yusufzai who still inhabit that valley).

Buddhism[ edit ]

Buddhism extended its horizons to the western borders of Gandhara and included the regions between the Kabul and Indus rivers in its wings. The hills of Maini produce Buddhist remains everywhere. Due to the presence of Buddhist remains, Maini can be described as a critical part of the Gandhara Civilization.

Alexander invasion [ edit ]

Alexander, who had a rivalry with Achaemenians, entered 327 BC. B.C., after destroying western parts of Gandhara, the plains of Swabi to fight the Ashvakas (Qureshi, 1967:93) and meeting the second division of his army to cross the Indus at Hund, ancient Udhbāndepur or Ohind. He may have entered Maini while pursuing his Persian counterparts.

Mauryan Empire[ edit ]

The Rock Edicts of Ashoka at Shahbazgarhi attest to the presence of the Maurya Empire in the nearby regions of the Indus River. And the pious Ashoka sent his missions to this part of Gandhara to spread his Dhamma.

Indo-Greek Time [ edit ]

The short-lived occupation of the Mauryans lasted a century that did not completely erase Greek influence. The occupation of the Indo-Greek kingdom in Maini is evident from their large number of coins, which provide information that this place was presented to them before their invasion. Buddhist and Hindu remains scattered in this valley are the finest examples of Buddhist livelihoods in this region.

Kushan rule[ edit ]

The most powerful and well-known rulers of Kushan made Gandhara a true sacred land of Buddhism through the sacred shrines and monasteries. The Maini Valley is full of archeological sites built during the Kushan Empire, showing the widespread character of Kushan art. A large number of coins from Scythians and great Kushans can be found, including a small number of coins from Hindu Shahis (Turk-Shahis) and Muslim dynasties in the nearby hills, giving a glimmer of hope that they ruled this valley.

Hun/Ephthalite invasion [ edit ]

In Pakistan, the Kushans were generally followed by Ephthalite Hūṇas, who destroyed Buddhist institutions. While the monuments in Maini would have faced the same situation. When Hsuan-Tsang arrived at the northwestern border, he found the country in a ruinous, deserted state with most Buddhist institutions in a state of decay. Most of Maini’s archaeological sites then remained uninhabited.

Hindu Shahi rule [ edit ]

Kāñṛo Dherai, a mound filled with worked stones, has the remains of Hindu shahis showing signs of burning and flames on its stones. These burnt stones indicate that the Ghaznavids expelled the Hindu Shahis from here and burned their possessions.

Arrival of Yusufzai[ edit ]

Later the Yusufzai occupied this region and to this day the Utmān (from the Mandanṛ lineage), a sub-tribe of the Yusufzai, have lived here. It is consistently evident in history and in the Pashto scriptures that war broke out between the Yusufzais and Mughals in the northern fields of Topi (Rasool, 1993:12). While the northern fields of Ṭopi belong to Maini, this means that the war was fought in the Maini valley.

Islamic period[ edit ]

Sheikh Mali Baba (originally referred to as “Siekh Ādam”) belonged to the Kshatriya family, a well-known and wise man in Pashto history, who also belonged to this valley responsible for the allocation of land among the Pakhtoon tribes from Indus to Swat is responsible Some local Hindki peoples after converting to Islam now call themselves Sheikh Mali khel basically they are Hindki peoples after converting to Islam they descendants as Sheikh-Mali they still speak Hindko- Language, He was a pious man who wrote a book, Daftar, on Yousuzais and on the Pakhtoon Valley territorial reforms (Nawaz, 1987:249-253). the Haji Khel Miagan, and are highly respected for their sayyid and pious lineage. In South Asia it is not an ethnic title but a professional title generally attributed to Muslim merchant families. The Shaikhs claimed to be descendants of Arabs, however, almost all Shaikhs were not actually descended from Arabs. Hindus who converted to Islam and took the title Shaikh tended to belong to the Kshatriya Varna, although use of the title was flexible. In the former border regions and Punjab of Pakistan, the title of sheikh was given to new converts and not to those of Arab descent.[6] The Julaha weaver caste became Ansaris who claimed descent from Abu Ayub Al-Ansari. The butcher castes claimed descent from the Quraysh tribe. The Kayastha record holder caste became Siddiques who claimed descent from Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq.[7][8][9]

A famous saying confirming the flexibility of the Sheikh title says: “Last year I was a Julaha (weaver); this year I am a Sheikh; next year, if the harvest is good, I will be a Syed.”[6] [9]

1857 War and War of Independence[ edit ]

During the 1857 War of Independence, some of the Muslim Saints came to Maini, who were pursued and killed by Sikhs and the British army in the nearby fields. Two of the saints have their tombs in the Habīb Khel Mosque, while the others are in the eastern fields across the mountain stream.

Brigadier General Sir Neville B. Chamberlain, a British soldier from the Punjāb garrison, was appointed in the Maini Valley and Topi region to draw out the Sepoy mutiny radicals from behind the hills stretching south-east from Ambela near the right bank of the Indus River (Veville, 1977: 50).

Archaeological sites[ edit ]

Archaeological sites in Maini

A large number of Buddhist and Hindu archaeological sites are located in the Maini Valley. The main village was founded on ancient remains and the main inhabited area is surrounded by several archaeological sites of various types. Famous archaeological sites of Maini are Bañṛ Dherai, Najeem Jāṛe Cemetery, Murādu Dherai, Hāji Khel, Sūlai Dherai, Rahīma, Kāñṛo Dherai, Ajumair Hill, Ghundheray, Shādo Dherai, Ḍeelor (Lanḍay) Dherai, Khazāna Dherai, Patyā) (Fāteha) Dherai, Tūlkū Dherai, Shakrai Dherai, Kas Dherai, parts of Shālizara, Gaṛhai, Ḍhundheray and the parts of the fields between Shakrai and Kambaray.[10]

The Maini Valley has a strategic position due to its geographic location. The famous Buddhist sites of Azīz Dheri and Rāni-Ghaṭ[10] lie to the west beyond Ajumair Hill, the Suumpur Stupa of Baja lies to the southwest, the Gala Fort and Sri-Koṭ lie to the southeast, the archeological site of the Banj -Hill is to the east and the fortress of Shah-kot Baba (on Mahābaṇ Peak) is to the north.
