Career[edit]

2009–15: Early years, first WTA Finals

Rogers at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships

Rogers made her debut on the ITF Women’s Circuit at the $10,000 event in St. Joseph in July 2009. She had a chance to make her first main draw on the WTA Tour at the 2010 Charleston Open, but failed to qualify. In May 2010, she reached her first ITF final at $50,000 Indian Harbor Beach, but lost to Edina Gallovits-Hall. 2016–17: French Open quarterfinals, breakthrough

Rogers at the 2016 French Open

Despite missing the Australian Open through injury, Rogers started the year strong by reaching her second career final on the WTA Tour, losing to Francesca Schiavone at the Rio Open on clay in February. Things did not go well for Rogers then, with early losses in the following three months.

However, she then reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinals at the French Open. She became the first American, alongside Serena Williams, to reach the quarterfinals since Venus Williams in 2006. In doing so, she defeated three seeded players, including Petra Kvitová, No. 12, and Karolína Plíšková, No. 19. In the quarterfinals match, she lost to eventual champion Garbiñe Muguruza. This run also saw her climb into the top 60 for the first time. Despite great progress, she then struggled again with the results by the end of the year.

In the 2017 season, she made further progress. In its inaugural week, she defeated first-year world top 10 Eugenie Bouchard. She then took part in the Hobart International, where she reached the quarterfinals. At the Australian Open, she upset world No. 4 Simona Halep 6-3, 6-1 in the first round.[8] She began the clay-court season by making the quarterfinals of the Charleston Open at premier level, where she also defeated her compatriot and world No. 11 Madison Keys. After early defeats at the Italian Open and Madrid Open, she reached the quarterfinals of the Internationaux de Strasbourg.

She then followed that up with a third round at the French Open. She reached another third Grand Slam round at Wimbledon, but then lost to world No. 1 Angelique Kerber. At the US Open, she also reached the third round where she was stopped by another top 10 player, Elina Svitolina.

2018–20: From Injury to Progress, US Open Quarterfinals

After battling a knee injury for some time, Rogers underwent knee surgery in May 2018.[11] From the beginning of 2018 she only played at the Australian Open and Indian Wells, but failed in both tournaments in the first round.[12] She was out of the game for the remainder of the season.

She returned to action in April 2019 at the Charleston Open and won her first match by defeating Evgeniya Rodina in straight sets. However, she lost her next match to Jeļena Ostapenko in three sets after leading 5–1 in the decider and having match points. She later reached the second round of the French Open and the Mallorca Open.[15] In September 2019, she won the $60,000 Templeton, her first ITF title since September 2013. In October 2019, she reached the final of the $80,000 Macon, where she lost to compatriot Katerina Stewart.

She enjoyed a successful campaign on American hard courts in the summer of 2020. She reached the semifinals at the Top Seed Open after upsetting Serena Williams in the previous round. Then at the US Open, she beat Irina Khromacheva, Elena Rybakina, Madison Brengle and Petra Kvitová, who was seeded 11th before losing to Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals. After that, she returned to the top 60 rankings.
