Jack Arute ARUTE SR.: A FRIEND, A LEGEND

SHAWN COURCHESNE; Courant Staff WriterTHE HARTFORD COURANT

The golf cart pulled slowly bese me in the paddock at Stafford Motor Speedway, and Jack Arute Sr. patted his hand in the empty passenger seat. He dn’t have to say a word. When I first saw a reporter re Arute, someone in the press box joked that the track owner had the reporter in his pocket because that’s the only way Arute would let a media re. In later years, ring the shotgun with Arute, I wondered if other reporters were saying that about me. But I dn’t care. Arute, who seemed to know more about racing than anyone I had ever met, took care of what I wrote. He dn’t help. He just talked.

Almost every week he would interrupt me to talk about what I had written in my Fray column. It dn’t matter if the topic was Short Track Racing or Nextel Cup Series or sports car racing. He always had an opinion. Good, bad or indifferent, he pa attention and told me what he thought. He told me when I was wrong, he told me when I was right. It was important. On Monday, Stafford Motor Speedway lost its patriarch with the death of Jack Arute Sr. I lost my re. I lost the treasure chest of racing stories that came with ring that golf cart. lost a friend

At the end of the 1998 racing season, I wrote a column about some inter-track issues in Connecticut. I mentioned that the promoters on the tracks stab each other in the butt. It was a poor choice of words and Jack let me know that. A typed letter from Jack arrived at The Courant detailing his disappointment with my column. In it he took a few personal shots at me, which hurt. He mentioned that I d an internship for media and PR training at his track while I was in college, and now he had to wonder if the program was working, if it was producing reporters like me.

I had just started covering races and we had no relationship. I pored over this letter all winter and we never spoke. When the 1999 season started, I worried about how things would go. When the golf cart pulled up next to me in the paddock that first weekend, I was getting nervous and freezing to the core. The scowl on his face told me I was about to get it. In a booming voice, he sa, “I’m mad at you.” There was a pause before he continued. “You dn’t call me and blame me for what I wrote. I wrote this letter so you would call me and reprimand me. I’ve been waiting all winter for you to call and yell at me.”

And then he laughed, the laugh that would become so familiar to him. “I know he was hard on you at times, but he wasn’t harder on you than he was on his own ks,” Jack Arute Jr. sa Monday as we shared stories about special times with his dad. “It was his way. If he dn’t take care of you, he wouldn’t give you the time of day. He only gave that attention to the people he cared about.” The day before the first race of the 2005 season, I had a disagreement with Mark Arute, Stafford’s General Manager and Jack’s son, which resulted in our meeting behind closed doors at our vent frustration.

The next day, when the golf cart pulled up, Jack had a mischievous smile on his face and burst out laughing before I could say a word. “You and Mark are already kissing and putting on make-up?” he asked me. “You two are like an old married couple. But it keeps me entertained.” Arute was so proud of what he and his family had built in Stafford and it dn’t bother him one bit that people in racing sometimes scoffed at the ego behind it. “It’s human nature,” he sa to me two years ago. “Nobody likes General Motors, nobody likes NASCAR. I think we’re the most successful and best of the three Connecticut tracks and it’s natural that people in the sport don’t like us. .. You know what the mystery is at Stafford? It plays the palace. They all know it, they all see it. The guys who can’t do that go somewhere else and shoot us.”

Two years ago, I spent most of a March day with Jack at his home in Bedford, N.H. for a profile story. As we moved down the timeline of his life, he took so many paths, most of which had nothing to do with the play I was writing. He knew it, but I dn’t want to stop him. It was a history lesson I will never forget. At the end of the day, I told him I would contact his sons, Dav and Wayne, with whom he had a strained relationship. He asked me not to call her. I had to and I d. As expected, neither of them had very nice things to say about their father. The day the story broke, the golf cart pulled up and he tapped the seat. I got in, ready to face his wrath. He put his arm around me, leaned forward and sa, “Your story is well done.”

I asked him if he was upset that I spoke to Dav and Wayne. He laughed. “You were just doing your job. Keep doing what you’re doing no matter what anyone says.” I told him I still have the letter he sent me in 1998. I asked him if he was still concerned about how his internship program would turn out. He laughed and told me he’s still waiting for me to call and yell at him.

I wish I could still make that call.
