Information about Lewan’s early life is mainly found on his official website, which states that Lewan was born in Bydgoszcz, northern Poland, in 1941 during the German occupation of the country during World War II.[6] As a young child, Lewan loved music and enrolled at the Conservatory of Music in Gdańsk. He also sang in an opera. Lewan served in the Central Polish Army for several years, as all young men in Poland had to do at the time. Lewan has played in music halls across Poland and Northern Europe, including the National Philharmonic in Warsaw.[6] When Lewan came to the United States, he later met and later married his first wife, Rhonda Lewan, during a telethon and officially divorced in 2011. Rhonda then married Steve Saive, the former trumpeter of Jan Lewan’s polka band.[7]

After his career in Europe, Lewan moved to the United States via Canada. He settled in northeastern Pennsylvania, where he continued his polka career. He was instrumental in founding Pennsylvania Polka on PCN. During this time, Lewan toured frequently. Notable tours have included Poland, Ireland, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, England, Israel, Russia, Greece, Egypt and Ukraine.
He founded a polka-oriented orchestra and recorded several albums. Lewan’s self-titled album Jan Lewan and His Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy in 1995. Lewan performed with even bigger polka shows at Atlantic City’s acclaimed Las Vegas Hilton Showroom, Las Vegas Sands Convention Center, Trump Plaza Hotel Casino, Atlantis Hotel and Casino, and Trump Castle Hotel Casino.
Lewan’s legacy was the focus of the 2007 television documentary Mystery of Polka King, the sequel to the 2009 documentary The Man Who Would Be Polka King, as well as the 2017 comedy film The Polka King, in which Lewan von Jack Black is portrayed.[8]

Lewan owned and operated a gift shop in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. When he returned to Poland, he would bring jewelry and other goods to sell in the shop. To support the store, he also sold shares and promised returns of 12 percent and 20 percent to the investors, many of whom had traveled with him. The state of Pennsylvania warned him to stop selling securities, but he persisted. In 2004, Lewan was arrested for defrauding about 400 people in 22 states out of millions of dollars. Lewan was sentenced by a federal judge to five years and 11 months in prison and a seven-year New Jersey sentence, all served concurrently.[1] Lewan was indicted by the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice and convicted by the Mercer County Superior Court of money laundering and securities fraud.
In Delaware prison in 2004, Lewan was stabbed in the neck by a cellmate. He was taken to a nearby hospital and returned to prison a few days later. The perpetrator of the stabbing had his sentence extended by 15 years. [citation needed] Lewan was released from prison in 2009.[9][10]

Born in Poland, Jan Lewan rose to national fame as a polka band leader.
He emigrated to Pennsylvania and lived in Luzerne County for most of his life. Now he is returning to his homeland to help Ukrainian refugees.
Jan Lewan says he must do something to help Ukrainian refugees, he has family in Poland, he recently traveled to Poland with medical supplies.
“It was heartbreaking for me to see the pictures as they were sent to me,” said Jan Lewan.
Jan Lewan says he cannot believe what is happening in Ukraine and in nearby Poland, his homeland. He says hospitals in Ukraine are in dire need of medical supplies. He delivered suitcases full of the supplies needed.
“Well from what I saw on TV I didn’t realize the threat and danger until I went there and wanted to go because I have my brother and all my family up there. I thought the border is still open, let me go,” said Lewan.
Many people know Lewan as Polka King. He rose to fame in the 1980s and then fell out of favor when he admitted to stealing millions of dollars from people across the country in a Ponzi scheme. He spent 6 years in prison. His life was turned into a movie called The Polka King starring Jack Black.

The film is about Jan Lewan, the leader of the Polish-American polka band, who was jailed in 2004 for running a pyramid scheme. The film begins with a performance by Jan Lewan’s (Black) Polka Band in Pennsylvania. Towards the end of the show, he brings his wife Marla (Slate) onto the stage. Marla, a former beauty queen, models amber jewelry that she sells in her gift shop. After the concert, Jan tells a happy concert-goer how he and Marla met and how he’s done every horrible job imaginable, from dishwasher to janitor, to make the American Dream come true.
His band’s clarinetist, Mickey (Schwartzman), visits Jan at his gift shop to tell him he wants to leave the band. Jan takes Mickey to a nearby pizzeria, urging him to stay and promising more money. Feeling that Jan has grown the band to an unsustainable size, Mickey reveals that other members are considering quitting, especially after the rumor Jan hired a dancing bear to accompany the shows. He admits the bear is part of the storyline now, but insists better days are ahead. Then he gets a pizza and goes out to deliver it.
An elderly couple visit Jan and ask about investing in his band. He explains that they are guaranteed a 12% annual return on their investment. The state office of the Securities and Exchange Commission discovers that Jan is taking on investors and sends investigator Ron Edwards (Smoove) to meet him. He informs Jan that it’s illegal for him to accept investments since he didn’t register properly. He gives Jan three days to return his investors’ money and close.
With hundreds of thousands of dollars already invested, Jan cannot meet the SEC deadline. He buys lottery tickets and asks for more work at the pizzeria. When the elderly couple comes back and asks to invest more money with him, Jan changes the company name on his forms and takes her money. He tells Edwards that he has officially closed his first investment program, omitting the fact that he has started a new one.
The film accompanies Jan in the further expansion of his company. Jan starts a travel company offering trips to Europe. He sells a package that culminates in a private audience with the Pope. In Rome, he asks Mickey to help him bribe Vatican officials to secure papal audience. Realizing he has lied to all tour-goers, Mickey threatens to expose Jan, but Jan explains that his philosophy is to just say his goals out loud until they come true. He encourages Mickey to do the same, and Mickey explains that he has dreamed of making a stage name for himself. Jan kneels with him in the hotel lobby and calls him “Mickey Pizzazz”.
Believing that if Marla wins another beauty pageant, business will increase, Jan bribes the judges to crown her Mrs. Pennsylvania. The resulting controversy in the press is causing some investors to withdraw their money or complain to the SEC. A second investigation shows that Jan’s Ponzi scheme has expanded into millions of dollars. When he is arrested, Jan is overjoyed that God has finally revealed the truth.
Jan is sentenced to five years in prison. His cellmate cuts his throat, and Jan is glad because everyone treats him better after surviving the attack. Marla divorces Jan and he lost everything. He is released from prison and returns to manage his polka band.
