Jazmine Sullivan’s Career Break Was Due to Abusive Relationship

Singer Jazmine Sullivan was forced to put her career on hold to deal with personal issues in her life, like her weight gain and a failed relationship.

Sullivan emerged from her self-imposed exile to release a new album, Reality Show. She says she’s accepted who she is — a survivor of domestic violence.

Sullivan spoke to Hello Beautiful about her real reason for leaving the music industry. “I went through a bad breakup and a bad relationship,” she said.

“A lot of people think that the pressures of the industry and, you know, my weight and everything, made me quit… and I felt like I was losing out. But it wasn’t at all. It had a bit to do with it, but a lot of it was personally dealing with my own mess in my own life, and it was just all too much and I had to stop.

About surviving domestic violence

“For a long time I kind of stayed away from everyone. When you know you’re wrong and you know you’re not doing something right, you try to stay away from people who tell you that.”

“It’s taken me a long time to feel comfortable enough to say it. I’ve been through a lot of guilt myself, should I disclose it? Am I petty when I talk about it? There are many feelings that women have about this. But [I realized] that this can potentially help someone to see that someone that they look up to or listen to or are a fan of theirs has actually been through it, and it’s not just me that’s been through it, but i came out it. I just felt like it was part of my story, so why not share? I am the face of my own situation. I don’t know if I can be the face for everyone, but I definitely want to share my story as I experienced it and I hope people can learn from it like I did.”

Sullivan also spoke about understanding love

“I’m literally figuring things out every day, just like everyone else. People think I know more about love than I actually do. I love love and I’m always looking for men and how relationships work and why they don’t work and stuff like that. But I don’t know shit.”

Hopefully Jazmine now knows the difference between sex and intimacy (which humans naturally desire) and love – which is given, not found.

Best albums of 2021 Jazmine Sullivan’s ‘Heaux Tales’

The Undefeated asked our writers to pick the most important albums from a crazy year. You can find the rest of their selection here.

Jazmine Sullivan’s Heaux Tales could easily have been drowned out. For one, it fell 48 hours after the US Capitol rioted in Washington, and honestly that’s where much of the discussion in and around America lived at the moment. The world didn’t intentionally conspire against the Philadelphia native. But it sure as hell didn’t do her any favours, either.

There is a saying that, when practiced, can lead to a truly purposeful life. “Do the work. Control what you can control. And let life figure out the rest.” Sullivan did just that. Not only is Heaux Tales one of the standout projects of 2021, it might be one of the most honest. Transparency was Always one of Sullivan’s strengths, she once made hit records about property destruction over a dumped lover and a heart-to-heart conversation with another and saying she was in love with someone else.

At the time of publication my assessment was that Heaux Tales is the album version of a group chat. On any given day, group chat takes a litany of forms: It’s a stand-up comedy show. It’s an advisory board for everything from career moves to happy hour. It’s a discussion platform. And in the case of Heaux Tales, it’s therapy.

RCA records

Six individual testimonies from black women serve as the collective muses for Sullivan’s first album since the 2015 reality show. Antoinette, Ari (Lennox), Donna, Rashida, Precious and Amanda each confess a litany of personal insecurities and dreams: insatiable sexual desires, the love of money and the associated options for a better life, losing love and being the reason, how to find the beauty within yourself in an Instagram-obsessed world. They dictate the tempo through their individual “stories,” giving Sullivan freedom to become poetic in unabashed, vulnerable performances. Like, “Oh, I’m tryna find a f— to give for you/You ran out of chances of forgivin’, yeah,” she sings on “Pick Up Your Feelings.” “Yeah listen, I’m not listening / Just for you to go and break my heart again.”

Since the beginning of time, men have been trying to figure out what women are talking about among themselves. And while it’s true that most men couldn’t handle the brutally honest truth of women, Heaux Tales feels like any of us will ever meet a fly on the proverbial brick wall.

History is littered with examples of black women whose voices, emotions and experiences have been stripped of their humanity. With Heaux Tales comes the deep emphasis on all three and exactly why they are important. Not only the grandiose moments, like a picture book wedding, but also the complicated realities of life. The reality we desire often lies on the other side of the fear we inflict on ourselves that tells us we’re not worth it.

In “The Other Side,” Sullivan boldly explains that the life she longs for includes a healthy relationship, children from a surrogate mother, and spending her husband’s money carefree. “Price Tags,” starring Anderson .Paak, is impossible to get out of your head as Sullivan vouches for “money keeps the P-y wet.” It’s a nifty twist in an industry where it’s common for male artists to flaunt their wealth to woo women.

On the other hand, we often hear of heartbreak over a male partner’s transgressions. “Lost One” reveals the vulnerability of lost love that comes from being the root cause of their breakup. “I know that’s asking too much/I know I’m a selfish B—/But I want you to know that I worked on it,” Sullivan admits. “I know it doesn’t matter/I know it doesn’t help you heal the fuck faster.” That kind of guilt never really leaves a person and it affects every relationship thereafter. And it almost begs the question: was Sullivan speaking from personal experience? And if so, how does that person listen to this record?

Tales is littered with such standout moments. There is one, however, in the album’s final song, a duet with H.E.R. in “Girls Like Me”. Is it sad that Sullivan decided to end the album with a song that made both her and her collaborator question their self-worth? But somehow it’s perfect. The album didn’t need an emotionally correcting moment to end with, as the 14-track odyssey is a reflection of life. We haven’t figured everything out. Every day we go through a series of emotions. And some days end with a moment where we ask ourselves, “What the hell am I doing wrong?”

Listen as Sullivan belts out lines like “What you asked I would have given/It ain’t right the way these hoes win” or how she almost screams at the top of her lungs, “Because y’all n—when he us.” takes you there.” Or like H.E.R. admits that maybe she should look like a stripper since her ex can’t seem to get enough of it, or the emotional defeat when she says, “I can’t do these good girls anymore.” These aren’t just lyrics. They are survival mandates.

They lived these lyrics and these are the scars. As a man, this reminded me of something Tupac Shakur once said about how black men “get on our sisters hard [and] we don’t know the pain we’re causing.” If we’re honest about ourselves as men, we have to ask ourselves, does a woman from our past think of us when she hears this song? More importantly, what have we done to mature?

At any given moment, all of our questions are swirling around in our heads. We can answer some for ourselves. For others, it’s about letting life do what life does and letting it unfold on its own. Heaux Tales isn’t just an escape for black women. It is also a musical testament to black women being their most honest, vulnerable and transparent selves in a society that has never shown them the homage they deserve.

That’s what group chats are for, of course. Feeling good about being the truest version of yourself should always be the end goal.
