Jeff Yeager The five most asked retirement questions

Throughout 2015 I’ve had the pleasure of sharing tips, tricks and advice for a happier and earlier retirement with GOBankingRates readers. I put these tips together while writing my book, How to Retire the Cheapskate Way. At the end of the year – and this series of articles – here is a recap of some of the more important points:

1. How much money do I need to retire comfortably?

That’s the $64,000 question. And while the answer depends on many individual variables, in most cases it will likely be much more than $64,000.

Also note that most financial planners use one-size-fits-all models for retirement savings that don’t adequately account for the dramatically different spending habits of potential retirees. This weakness in planning models — coupled with the fact that many financial advisors have a vested interest (aka “commissions”) in selling you certain investment products — can lead some people to believe they need a lot more retirement savings than they do they probably do.

Become your own CFO (Cheap Frugal Officer) and analyze the spending side of your retirement budget to get a more realistic idea of the size of the retirement nest egg you need.

2. Is it realistic to think that I will spend less when I retire?

Chances are your spending will decrease as you age in retirement, at least according to the annual consumer spending survey produced by the US Census Bureau. With the exception of healthcare spending, the survey shows that average spend in virtually every other spending category — transportation, entertainment, housing, food, etc. — falls significantly in retirement, particularly for those aged 65 and over.

While your spending isn’t guaranteed to decrease, overall the data is compelling for retirees and worth considering when developing your retirement budget. However, keep in mind that many people report an increase in spending (particularly on things like travel and entertainment) in the early years of retirement.

3. At what age should I start receiving Social Security?

To find the best answer to this question, you would need to be able to predict the future and specifically how long you will live. And while you’ve got your crystal ball out, you may also need to predict how long your spouse and other potential recipients of your Social Security benefits will live. However, there are built-in financial incentives that encourage people to defer receiving Social Security benefits.

For example, under the current system, your monthly Social Security benefit will be about 75 percent higher if you wait until age 70 to receive benefits, as opposed to age 62, which is currently the minimum age for receiving benefits is.

4. What other Medicare coverage do I need in addition to the Medicare Part A base coverage?

Most Americans are eligible for Medicare Part A. Although there are many pros and cons to paying for additional Medicare coverage, deciding which health insurance—if any—to carry in retirement depends on your individual financial situation and your health needs. However, most retirees I interviewed for my book chose to complete Part B, which covers some medical fees and other expenses not covered by Part A, in addition to Part D, which covers some prescription and generic prescription drugs covers.

5. Should I get nursing care insurance if I need to spend time in a nursing home?

As with any type of insurance, long-term care insurance is a matter of affordability versus your risk of needing coverage in the future. Long-term care insurance tends to be so expensive that many retirees simply cannot afford it. Those who can easily afford it probably don’t need it, as they likely have sufficient financial resources to pay for care when they need it.

For retirees with net worth “in the middle” — that is, between $300,000 and $600,000 in net worth — long-term care insurance may depend on your particular medical history and family situation. If you choose long-term care insurance, do your homework; Long term care insurance policies are notoriously complicated and often have limitations and loopholes as to what they actually cover.
