Death of Jeffrey Rawls Greenville – Obituary: NC Plane Crash Victims: The Sheriff’s Office identified the adults on board the plane as Pilot Ernest Durwood Rawls, 67, of Greenville; Jeffrey Worthington Rawls, 28, of Greenville; Stephanie Ann McInnis Fulcher, 42, of Sea Level; and Douglas Hunter Parks, 45, at sea level.
Four teenagers and four adults returning from a hunting trip were aboard a light plane that crashed off the coast of North Carolina over the weekend, authorities said Tuesday.
Everyone on board was from North Carolina. Six of the passengers lived in coastal Carteret County, a mostly rural area that includes tourist destinations and the southern edge of the Outer Banks.
Divers found the plane’s fuselage and cabin in the Atlantic Ocean about 3 miles (5 kilometers) from shore and in about 55 feet (17 meters) of water, Carteret County Sheriff Asa Buck told reporters Tuesday.
Crews removed human remains as well as aviation equipment that could help investigators determine the cause of the crash, Buck said. The Coast Guard said Tuesday it was suspending its search but would continue to work with local partners through ongoing salvage operations.
The sheriff said the plane crash and recovery efforts were “extremely tough” because the community is so tight-knit.
“Half my family is from down here,” Buck said. “I know the people involved. And I know some of them very well.”
The teenagers have been identified as Jonathan Kole McInnis, 15, of Sea Level; Noah Lee Styron, 15, of Cedar Island; Michael Daily Shepard, 15, of Atlantic; and Jacob Nolan Taylor, 16, of Atlantic.
Carteret County includes communities like Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach, as well as the Cape Lookout National Seashore. The spire of the famous Outer Banks Lighthouse is known for its black and white diamond pattern.
But the county also includes the coastal town of Atlantic, which has a population of about 500 and is in a region called Down East.
Kendra Lewis, 29, organized a prayer vigil in the parking lot of a closed grocery store for Tuesday night.
“We’re just an old fishing community,” she said. “We’re used to banding together and looking out for each other.”
Lewis watched the four boys grow up on the plane.
“They are the definition of Down East people,” she said. “They hunted. they loved each other They were just part of the community. We’re all just one big family.”
The teens went to East Carteret High School, which has about 600 students, the school system said in a statement.
After news of the crash on Sunday, school counsellors, psychologists and members of the crisis response team arrived at the school, where the students have begun “telling each other great stories of beautiful memories,” said Rob Jackson, the county school principal.
“It’s hard for adults,” Jackson said. “Even harder, I think, for teenagers who grew up with their friends suddenly being taken from them.”
Charlie Snow, a close friend of the pilot, said Ernest Rawls and Jeff Rawls were father and son. Jeff Rawls was also a pilot, Snow said.
Snow said the older Rawls was nicknamed “Teen.” Rawls had previously flown for Snow’s company, Outer Banks Airlines, and he and Rawls had also flown together. The elder Rawls was a highly skilled and extremely capable pilot, not to mention a senior flight mechanic, said Snow, who is also a pilot.
“If someone could get out of something, if it was possible to get out of it, they could have done it,” Snow said during a phone interview. “So I think everything that happened was catastrophic. But you know, that’s just speculation.”
Snow said he and Ernest Rawls are like brothers and have been friends for 20 years.
“I just don’t know many people in the world that I’ve loved more than him,” Snow said. “He was just a great guy, a great pilot, a wonderful man — a fine Christian man.”
Snow said the plane Rawls flew belonged to Parks, one of the passengers. Fulcher, another passenger, was Park’s girlfriend. Snow said the couple took the teens on a charity hunt.
FlightAware listed a departure for this aircraft from Hyde County Airport at 1:35pm. Sunday. It noted the plane was last seen around 2 p.m. near Beaufort, the seat of Carteret County.
The Coast Guard said it received a report from an air traffic controller at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point about a plane that may have crashed about 4 miles east of Drum Inlet. The air traffic controller reported that the plane was behaving erratically on radar and then disappeared from the screen.
The single-engine Pilatus PC-12/47 crashed about 18 miles northeast of Beaufort, according to an email from the Federal Aviation Administration. A preliminary accident report on the FAA’s website noted that the plane “entered the water under unknown circumstances.”

The tractor-trailer truck overturned during the crash, but the driver reportedly suffered only minor injuries and is being treated at a Winston-Salem hospital. WRAL.com news agency has identified the pilot as 43-year-old Raymond John Ackley.
“Apparently it had a problem taking off,” said witness Donald Holt Sr. of the plane in the crash, WRAL.com reported. “My wife said, ‘The plane is pretty low.’ I said, ‘Yes, it is.'”

GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – A visitation and service will be held in March for two of the victims of February’s devastating plane crash off the coast of Carteret County.
The plane’s pilot, Teen Rawls, and his son, Jeffrey Rawls, will be remembered and celebrated Saturday, March 19 at Reimage Church on the Greenville-Winterville border.
According to the In Loving Memory of Teen & Jeffrey Rawls Facebook group, the visit will be at 10 a.m. and the celebration at 11 a.m. The event is titled Celebrating Life & Faith.
Authorities have only positively identified two of the eight victims aboard the crashed plane. After the last update, the other remains were sent to East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine for additional examination and identification.
