Jenna Johnson Interview

An Interview with ‘DWTS’ and ‘SYTYCD’ Star Jenna Johnson

Published: 07/11/2017

Q: What was it like auditioning for SYTYCD when your two sisters, Stacy and Jillian, were so close to making the top 20 in previous seasons?

Jenna Johnson: They both made it to the Green Mile [the final stage of the competition before the top 20 is announced], but both were eliminated. I was under extreme pressure because I wanted to make her proud. Both had been my teachers growing up. I had so much respect and love for her. When I made it, my family were the first people I called and they were the first in the audience for my first episode. It was a great moment for all three of us.

Q: How was your experience on the show?

Jenna Johnson: I think season 10 was a beautiful season. We had some of the most amazing dancers indivually. I think it wasn’t a competitive season, which is crazy. We became a family. It dn’t feel like we were competing against each other every week. We wanted to see how the other is doing well, thriving and prospering.

My overall personal experience.. oh boy was I a mess. [She laughs] I remember working with Mandy Moore during Top 10 week with Neil Haskell. She’s been one of my mentors since I was eight years old. I walked in and she pushed me into a corner.

She sa, “Jenna, I have no ea what you do, but you’re not that type of dancer. Find out.”

That’s how we started our rehearsal, but it was true. When you’re so young and you come on the show, there’s so much pressure to prove yourself. It’s such an odd environment because you’re with choreographers you know, but you have that extra pressure of wanting America to fall in love with you.

I think I got my head around it in the first few weeks and am so grateful for Mandy’s words of encouragement. When we first started dancing with the All-Stars, I had my breakout dances: “I Can’t Make You Love Me” with Neil and my Mark Kanemura ponytail dance.

There was a definite shift halfway through, but it was a bittersweet experience. I wasn’t the dancer that I am or was the first few weeks. Thank goodness for mentors and teachers because the rest of the season has been fantastic.

Q: How was the Season 13 experience as an All-Star?

Jenna Johnson: It was like summer camp. It was fantastic! Jake Monreal had something special. I saw it from the day he came into academy week. His passion for dance and life was untouchable. He became someone so special to me, I’m grateful for that experience.

It was at a time in my life when I needed that and he was such a bright little light. He was the greatest gentleman. He would open all my doors for me; Ask if I need water in the mdle of rehearsal – my little heartthrob.

The reason I chose him was because I saw myself in him. Jake wasn’t as technically talented as some of the other contestants, and growing up I wasn’t either. I was never naturally gifted; I had terrible knees and really bad feet. But I knew I loved it so much that my passion exceeded that of the other dancers, and I saw that in Jake. He has so much love and appreciation for his sport.

Mandy Moore

Q: What does your relationship with your mentor, Mandy Moore, mean to you?

Jenna Johnson: She means the world to me. Without her I would without a doubt not be the dancer I am today. She shaped me from a young age. She gave me so much love, thought and appreciation.

She d one of my first solos and I was awful, but we’ve been together ever since. Without them I wouldn’t have had the experience I had on SYTCYD or DWTS. On DWTS she showed me how to become a choreographer, artist and director.

The way she sees movement and camerawork and timings and transitions is like no one else I’ve ever met. I feel fortunate and blessed to call her a mentor. She’s so honest and personal with me, but I appreciate it. I get emotional even when I talk about her. I aspire to be her when I grow up.

Q: Can you explain what your behind-the-scenes role was in supporting Mandy on DWTS?

Jenna Johnson: I would come in with Artem [Chigvintsev] and Mandy would oversee the whole play. She would know exact times, counts, transitions and where things would take us. She would have a vision and say, “I want to see a spin right here and then I want to swoop across the stage.” We would help fill in the blanks with ballroom content, but she would do the rest.

She now has her own ballroom vocabulary from having so many seasons of DWTS under her belt. She’s gorgeous.

Mandy Moore

Dancing with the stars

Q: Was it your decision not to return this season?

Jenna Johnson: It was 100% my decision not to come back. It was the situation where they dn’t have a celebrity for me and wanted me to do a troupe. It was one of the most difficult and scary decisions for me because I never had the opportunity to say no. I’m still under contract and part of the DWTS family, but I’ve spent the ages of 18 to almost 23 doing this show. It was the most beautiful and incredible experience, but I dn’t experience everything I would like to experience.

I’m very interested in acting and would love to someday be in Broadway or in musicals. I also grew up singing. I’ve never been to an audition and got my first headshots this week. I thought it was time to try it and see if I like it.

Q: What was it like being a pro for the first time in Season 23?

Jenna Johnson: From one Jake to the next! [Jake Monreal on SYTYCD to Jake T. Austin on DWTS] It was great but incredibly stressful for my first season because I felt the pressure. I had seen it all so many times that I knew what to expect.

Of course I was so depressed that we went out first, but I know everything happens for a reason. If I hadn’t been out there first I wouldn’t have had a chance to do all the specials and I wouldn’t have been able to fill in for Sharna [Burgess] and have that experience with James [Hinchcliffe]. It was definitely one of my favorite seasons.

Q: When d you start focusing on making your health a priority?

Jenna Johnson: I’ve gone through a lot of changes in the last year and a half. It was about time I started focusing on myself and what I was doing with my life. I was thankful and happy in my life, but I knew I lacked love for myself.

I went through a major physical transformation after medical shock. I went home after the summer tour and deced to restart my life and refocus on what matters most. From that day on, I swore to myself that I would change and be the best of myself. That’s when I really started getting healthy and I lost a lot of weight. I balanced my life mentally, physically and emotionally.

I also watched my life and the last two and a half, three years I was stuck trying to fit in with the rest of Hollywood and I wasn’t happy. I want to be an outlet that people can entify with.

Q: How have you dealt with the negativity on social media directed at you and other women on the show?

Jenna Johnson: My favorite buttons are Report and Block. It comes from being associated with certain people on the show and they have these fandoms, especially the men on the show. It amazes me that they feel the need to comment on the life of someone they know nothing about or have never met in person.

One of the things that ruined me for a few years before I found myself is seeing accounts with the title “Jenna is fat” or “Jenna is an ugly pig”. I had multiple accounts that definitely bullied me. They would post the most horrible things.

I couldn’t imagine anyone I’d never met wanting to say that about me. Now it doesn’t bother me one bit. It kinda makes me giggle. How sad and miserable is your life that you have to say something about me to make your life feel better? Realize that people you write about are people and have feelings.

“It’s not just in there for the warm and fluffy feelings. It’s also my turn to show up, collect [the baby], hand it to him, say goodbye and hop on,” Maksim joked in July, saying Val will be a “better” dad than he thought he was for his 4th birthday -years is. old son Shai with Peta Murgatroyd. “It will happen.”
