Jeremy Wariner

American sprinter

Jeremy Matthew Wariner[1] (born January 31, 1984) is a retired[3] American track and field athlete who specializes in the 400 meters. He has won four Olympic medals (three gold, one silver) and six World Championships medals. He is the fourth fastest competitor in 400m history with a personal best of 43.45 seconds, behind Wayde van Niekerk (43.03 WR, 2016), Michael Johnson (43.18 WR, 1999) and Butch Reynolds (43.29 WR, 1988). the fifth fastest brand of all time when it was set in 2007.

Wariner was born in Irving, Texas. A successful collegiate athlete at Baylor University, he won gold medals in the 400m and 4 × 400m relay at his first Olympics in Athens in 2004. This was followed by two gold medals at the 2005 World Championships in the same disciplines. He went undefeated in the 400m during the 2006 ÅF Golden League, earning him the $250,000 jackpot. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, he remained world champion in the individual and relay over 400 m, which earned him the 2007 ESPY Award as the best male track and field athlete. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, he won the gold medal in the 4 × 400 m relay but took silver in the 400 m, finishing behind compatriot LaShawn Merritt. Wariner took the silver medal at the 2009 World Championships, again finishing second to Merritt.

Early career[edit]

Jeremy Wariner attended Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas, competed in multiple sports and was recognized for his outstanding speed. Under the coaching of Mike Nelson, who also coached 110-meter hurdler Reggie Harrell at Lamar High School, he became the 2002 Texas 5A State Sprint Champion in the 200-meter and 400-meter and set high school bests of 20.41 seconds (wind assisted ) and 45.57 on seconds, respectively. He enrolled at Baylor University and quickly established himself as a collegiate sprint talent under the tutelage of Clyde Hart, who also coached the Baylor graduate and four-time Olympic 400m gold medalist and two-time world champion Michael Johnson was. Hampered somewhat by injuries late in his freshman year, Wariner regained his form by his sophomore year, winning both the 2004 NCAA Division I indoor and outdoor 400 meter titles. Later that year he took the national 400m title at the USATF Championships, making him the gold medal favorite at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Wariner then made his debut on the world sports stage at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He won two Olympic gold medals, the first in the 400 m in a personal best of 44.00 seconds and the second as the third stage of the US 4 × 400 m relay. After his Olympic successes, he turned pro and relinquished the rest of his college eligibility, although he remained at his parents’ home and continued to be coached by Clyde Hart.

Career[edit]

The next year, Wariner won the 400m at the 2005 USATF Championships with a time of 44.20s. At the World Championships in Helsinki on a cold and rainy day, he won the 400m in 43.93 seconds. He would then anchor the American team in the 4 × 400 m relay for the gold medal.

In early 2006, Wariner competed in the 200m and lowered his personal best to 20.19s. Later that year at the Golden Gala Meet in Rome, he set a new personal best of 43.62s in the 400m. Along with Asafa Powell (100m) and Sanya Richards (women’s 400m) he won his sixth of six Golden League events (400m) in the same season, earning him a total of $250,000.

In 2007 he filled a summer of dominating 400m performances, culminating with the World Championships in Osaka, where he was 31 Michael Johnson and Butch Reynolds had run faster).[4]

Rivalry with Merritt[edit]

In 2008, Wariner left longtime coach Clyde Hart in favor of working with Baylor assistant coach Michael Ford. This was an unexpected move given Wariner’s success under Hart, who had also coached his agent Michael Johnson. Wariner explained that he needed a change as Hart is nearing retirement, although the coach said the breakup was due to a pay dispute. By the time of the 2008 USATF Championship, Wariner and Johnson had many nagging questions about the reasons for such a change in an Olympic year. He finished second to LaShawn Merritt in the 400 m final of the USATF Championship and secured his spot on the US Olympic team in the 400 m and 4 × 400 m relay.

Wariner at the finish line of the 400m sprint final at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics

At the 2008 Olympics, Wariner qualified for the finals with a time of 44.12s, a run he slowed considerably in the final fifty meters. This led to great expectations that he could break Michael Johnson’s world finals record, but instead he took the silver, losing to LaShawn Merritt by nearly a second. David Neville was third, completing a US 400m sweep.

After his disappointment at the silver medal at the Olympics, Wariner admitted he made a mistake in dismissing Hart. He apologized to the coach emeritus after Johnson informed him that his new training program with Ford was lacking in some areas and took him back as coach. The emergence of Merritt had propelled Wariner to the second-best athlete for the first time in his pro career.

At the 2009 World Championships, Wariner won the silver medal in the 400 m, again behind LaShawn Merritt, and the gold medal in the 4 × 400 m relay.

London 2012 Olympic Games[edit]

Wariner was named to his third Olympic team as part of Team USA’s 4×400m relay squad. The two-time Olympic medalist in the 400m failed to make it through the 400m individual after a poor start and a sixth place finish in 45.24 seconds at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon on June 24, 2012. At the Olympic Games, Wariner left the relay squad because of a torn muscle fiber.[9]

2013 comeback[edit]

In March 2013, Wariner returned to victory by becoming the National Champion in the 400m at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships. However, at the 2013 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Wariner failed to advance through the qualifying round, finishing his qualifying run and the field last. He ran 44.96 at the 2016 Mt. SAC Relays to qualify for the 2016 United States Olympic Trials. At the time it was world No. 2 behind only Martyn Rooney’s 44.92, who had raced at the same track just minutes earlier. But in the trials he pulled 250 meters up into the semi-final race.

Awards and accolades[ edit ]

In 2014, Wariner was inducted into the Baylor Bears Hall of Fame.[12]

He was inducted into the Texas Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame, Class of 2016.[13]

Personal bests[edit]

Personal life[edit]

Wariner married attorney Sarah Nichols (now Wariner) in 2011. Together, the couple raise three children: Isabella, Lincoln, and Elijah. Outside of their personal careers, the Wariners own a Jimmy John’s franchise in Dallas, Texas, where Jeremy also serves as general manager.

As of 2021, Wariner was also the Head Track Coach at Parish Episcopal School in Dallas.

During the summer of 2018, Wariner was a “flex” player for Godspeed, a flag football team composed primarily of former professional American football players participating in the American Flag Football League (AFFL). The team was crowned champion of the participating professional teams but lost to the amateur champion team in the final match.

Ranking [ edit ]

Wariner was ranked among the best in the United States and the world in the 400-meter sprint event for the period 2004-2013, according to Track and Field News’ pundits’ votes.
