Billie Kay

Australian wrestler

Jessica McKay (born June 23, 1989) is an Australian professional wrestler. She is best known for her time in WWE, where she performed under the ring name Billie Kay. She is also known for her time in Impact Wrestling where she competed as Jessie McKay.

In June 2007, Kay made her professional wrestling debut with Pro Wrestling Alliance (PWA) and a year later she debuted in the Pro Wrestling Women’s Alliance promotion where she became a two-time PWWA Champion. She later began competing on the independent circuit for several promotions across the United States for several years, particularly and frequently for Shimmer athletes.

Early life[edit]

McKay began watching wrestling at the age of 10 alongside her brother and began her professional wrestling career by first participating in the Sydney-based Australian promotion, Pro Wrestling Australia. Before becoming a wrestler, McKay was a standout basketball player.[4] She attended the same high school (Westfields Sports) as fellow wrestler Cassie Lee.

Professional wrestling career[edit]

Pro Wrestling Alliance Australia (2007–2015) [ edit ]

McKay was coached by the Madison Eagles.[2] She made her PWA Australia debut on June 23, 2007, on her eighteenth birthday, with a win over Eagles and Aurora, wrestling under her birth name as Jessie McKay.

On August 2, 2008, McKay defeated defending champion Kellie Skater to win the PWWA Championship for the first time. She had a successful title defense on November 8 against Tenille Tayla. On November 22, she lost her title to Penni Lane.[13] After Lane vacated her title due to injury, on September 14, 2009, McKay won the PWWA Championship for a second time in a four-way match against Kellie Skater, Sway and Shazza McKenzie. McKay had two successful title defenses against KC Cassidy and Madison Eagles in March and May 2010, but lost the title to Eagles on June 11, 2010.

In September 2011, McKay failed to win a three-way match for the Shimmer Championship, which also included champion Madison Eagles and Nicole Matthews. In August 2012, she was defeated by Evie in a match to crown the interim PWWA champion.

Shimmering Sportswomen (2008–2015) [ edit ]

McKay began wrestling for American all-female promotion Shimmer Women Athletes in October 2008, making her debut in Volume 21 alongside Madison Eagles as Pink Ladies. They competed in a tag team gauntlet match to determine the first Shimmer of the Tag Team Champions, but were the first team eliminated.[16][18] McKay made her singles debut on Shimmer by losing to Kellie Skater at Volume 24. [11][19][20]

At Volume 33 in September 2010, McKay defeated Nicole Matthews, [21] [22] after losing to Matthews at Volume 30 in April earlier that year. She followed that up with an upset win over Ayako Hamada and Sara Del Rey in a three-way match, pinning former Shimmer Champion Del Rey at Volume 34. As a result, McKay was later granted a title shot against her trainer and former tag partner Shimmer Champion Madison Eagles at Band 35 in September 2010 but failed to win.

After her failed title challenge, McKay continued her feud with Nicole Matthews. At Volume 36, she teamed with Tenille and challenged the Canadian NINJAs (Matthews and Portia Perez) for the Shimmer Tag Team Championship, but was defeated. However, she gained a victory over the Canadian NINJAs in Volume 38 while teaming up with Serena. McKay ended her feud with Matthews with a loss in a two of three falls match at Band 39 in March 2011.

In March 2012, victories over Mia Yim in Volume 45 and former Shimmer Champion MsChif in Volume 46 resulted in McKay earning another shot at the Shimmer Championship, [15][29] but losing to defending champion Cheerleader Melissa in Volume 47 . [30] [31] At Volume 53 in April 2013, McKay was defeated by the Madison Eagles in the Eagles’ second leg. At Volume 57, Kay defeated Mercedes Martinez.

Other promotions (2008–2015) [ edit ]

In addition to wrestling for Shimmer, McKay has also wrestled for other American promotions, including Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) and Ring of Honor (ROH) in 2008 [36] [37] and Chikara in 2011. [38] She also wrestled in 2012 for Canadian promotion NCW Femmes Fatales. McKay debuted for American promotion Shine Wrestling on Shine 9 in April 2014 with a win in a six-person tag team match, teaming with Kellie Skater and Shazza McKenzie in defeating Nikki Roxx, Santana and Mia Yim.

WWE (2015–2021) [ edit ]

NXT (2015–2018) [ edit ]

McKay received a trial with WWE during their tour of Australia in August 2014 and became an NXT trainee on April 13, 2015. McKay made her televised ring debut on the June 10 episode of NXT, where she took on Becky Lynch under the ring name Jessie.[5] On August 7, she received the new ring name Billie Kay.[41] After attending most of her matches at NXT as a face, Kay entered her first match as a heel on the October 21 episode of NXT, losing to Asuka. Until late 2015, Kay was managed by fellow wrestler Sylvester Lefort during several NXT live events,[45][46] however it wasn’t long after Lefort was released from his contract in February 2016.[47] ]

On the January 13, 2016 episode of NXT, Kay competed in a number one battle royal for Bayley’s NXT Women’s Championship, which was won by Carmella. Kay made her first appearance on the main roster on the June 30 episode of SmackDown, where she worked as a jobber and lost to Dana Brooke. Kay eventually returned to NXT television on July 27, where she scored her first live win on the company by defeating Santana Garrett. After asking NXT General Manager William Regal for a match at TakeOver: Brooklyn II on the August 17 episode of NXT, she was granted one against debutant Ember Moon. At the August 20 event, Kay was defeated by Moon. After a brief hiatus, Kay returned on the September 21 episode of NXT where she defeated Aliyah.

In October, Kay began an alliance with Peyton Royce, later dubbed The Iconic Duo, [54] and later entered a feud with Liv Morgan, with the duo attacking and defeating Morgan in singles matches. This eventually led to a six-woman tag team match at TakeOver: Toronto, which was taped and aired for the November 23 episode of NXT, in which Aliyah, Ember Moon and Morgan defeated Kay, Royce and her partner Daria Berenato . 58][59] In late December, Kay and Royce became involved in a brief feud with NXT Women’s Champion Asuka after the latter declared that there was no competition for her.[60][61][62][63] This led to a fatal four-way match also involving Nikki Cross at the TakeOver: San Antonio event on January 28, 2017, in which both Kay and Royce failed to capture the NXT Women’s Championship.

The IIconics (2018–2020) [ edit ]

Kay and Royce, now dubbed The IIconics, made their main draft debuts on the April 10, 2018 episode of SmackDown Live when they attacked then-SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair while she was cutting a promo about her match at WrestleMania 34. A week later, Kay lost to Flair. In their first match together as part of the main roster, The IIconics earned their first win over Asuka and Becky Lynch. Over the next several months, Kay competed in various individual and tag team matches, but ended up on the losing side.[68][69][70][71][72] In August, the IIconics began their first feud on the main roster with Naomi, and the two were able to defeat her in singles matches. Eventually, Naomi teamed up with Asuka, but lost to the IIconics on October 6th at the Super Showdown, held in his home country of Australia. Three weeks later, both Kay and Royce competed in Evolution, WWE’s first all-female pay-per-view. They were the first two eliminated from a battle royal for a future women’s championship game.

On January 27, 2019, both Kay and Royce competed in their first Royal Rumble match, finishing 7th and 9th respectively, and managed to eliminate Nikki Cross before being both eliminated by Lacey Evans. On February 17 at the Elimination Chamber event, The IIconics competed in a Tag Team Elimination Chamber match for the inaugural WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, which was won by The Boss ‘n’ Hug Connection (Bayley and Sasha Banks). In March, The IIconics began a feud with Banks and Bayley, whom they defeated in a non-title match. Because of their win, they (and two other teams) challenged Banks and Bayley for the championship at WrestleMania 35 in a fatal four-way match. At the event, held on April 7, The IIconics won the match after Kay pinned Bayley to win the women’s tag team championship for the first time. On the August 5 episode of Raw, The IIconics lost the titles to Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross in a fatal four-way match also involving teams from The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane) and Fire and Desire (Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville) were involved). On October 16, it was announced that The IIconics had been drafted to the Raw brand as a supplemental pick of the 2019 WWE Draft.

After a brief hiatus, Kay and Royce returned on the May 11, 2020 episode of Raw, interrupting WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross. They later defeated the champion in a non-title match. They would unsuccessfully compete for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships multiple times throughout the summer. They would start a feud, with Ruby Riott taunting her backstage for not having any friends. They would continue to trade wins as Kay and Royce defeated Riott while Riott defeated Kay. At Payback, The IIconics were defeated by Riott and their newly reunited tag partner, Liv Morgan. The following night on Raw, The IIconics were forced to disband after losing by regulation to The Riott Squad.

Final storylines (2020–2021) [ edit ]

As part of the 2020 draft in October, Kay was undrafted and was subsequently signed as a free agent on the SmackDown brand.[89] Kay would then start a storyline on SmackDown where she would offer superstars like Street Profits and Big E to look at her resume, only to be rejected by them. On the January 1, 2021 episode of SmackDown, she helped The Riott Squad defeat Natalya and Tamina, much to their dismay. Over the next few weeks, Kay attempted to persuade The Riott Squad to include her in their group while escorting them to the ring during their matches and attempted to meddle in matches on their behalf, seemingly doing so for the first time since October 2015 Face twisted.[93][94][95] However, Kay resumed as a heel when she teamed with Carmella for a tag team turbulence match on Night 1 of WrestleMania 37, which was won by Natalya and Tamina. Again, this would be Kay’s last appearance in WWE as she (along with her former partner Peyton Royce) was released from their WWE contracts on April 15, 2021.

Impact Wrestling (2021–2022) [ edit ]

At Knockouts Knockdown on October 9, 2021, it was announced that The IIconics, now known as The IInspiration, would be making their debut for Impact Wrestling at Bound for Glory. At Bound for Glory, they defeated Decay (Havok and Rosemary) to win the Impact Knockouts World Tag Team Championship. On November 20, at Turning Point, The Inspiration had their first successful title defense when they defeated Decay again.

On April 27, McKay and McIntosh called for their immediate release from Impact Wrestling, announcing on their Twitter accounts.

Other media[edit]

McKay as Billie Kay made her WWE video game debut as a playable character in WWE 2K18, having since appeared in both WWE 2K19, WWE 2K20 and WWE 2K22.

On August 19, 2020, McKay launched her own YouTube channel called J McKay Does.[106]
