Consider for a moment the growing list of South Korean ballers who have made their mark on MLB. It started with Chan-Ho Park, still a legend for fans and young players in his home country. Among many others was Byung-Hyun Kim in this 2001 D-Backs Championship Club, Hee-Seop Choi for some years and more recently Shin-Soo Choo, Hyun Jin Ryu, Jung Ho Kang and Seunghwan Oh and Kwang Hyun Kim.

Due to the strength and organization of the amateur baseball scene in Korea, players have less incentive to sign young players to MLB teams than players in Latin America. Many Korean youth in the tight-knit baseball community there enjoy careers playing alongside their friends and childhood heroes in the Korea Baseball Organization. Most successful Korean pros first become KBO students and amass a large following before trying their luck in MLB.

But Choi, like Choo and Cha Seung Baek before him, chose to forego the KBO pipeline for the minor league lifestyle at the Seattle organization led by longtime international scout Ted Heid and scouts Pat Kelly and Jamey Storveck, who found one brought to the States were advanced bat and team leaders with some defense issues at a high school in the northwest port city of Incheon.

“At first it wasn’t my goal to play in the major leagues,” Choi said. “My goal was to be the best player I could be. The opportunity arose for me to go to the States and I didn’t think I would have that opportunity again so I jumped at it at a young age. Playing in the minor leagues helped me grow as a young player. A few years later I was kind of hoping that I could hopefully play in the majors.\””,”type”:”markdown”,”__typename”:”Markdown”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale \”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\ “ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}) .parts.8″:{“contentDate”:”2020-10-22T03: 49:21.55Z”,”description”:”Ji-Man Choi becomes the first Korean-born player to hit in the 6th inning in the World Series “,”duration”:”00:00:17″, “slug”:”choi-makes-world-series-history”,”source”:null,”tags”:[{“type”:”id”, “generated”:true,”id”:”$ROOT_QUERY. getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world -series-star\”,\”type\”:\ “story\”}).parts.8.tags.0″,”typename”:”Tag”},{“type”:”id”,”generated “:true,”id”:”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug( {\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series -star\”,\”type\”:\”story \”}).parts.8.tags.1″,”typename”:”Tag”},{“type”:”id”,”generated”: true,”id”:”$ROOT_QUERY.getFo rgeContentBySlug({\ “locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\ “story\” }).parts.8.tags.2″,”typename”:”Tag”},{“type”:”id”,”generated”:true,”id”:”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug( {\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story \”}).parts.8.tags.3″,”typename”:”Tag”}],”templateUrl”:”https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-images/image/private/{formatInstructions} /mlb/g5x0zcxbpuhmaivfihix “,”title”:”Choi Makes World Series History”,”type”:”video”,”url”:”/video/choi-makes-world-series-history”,”__typename”: “Video”}, “$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star \ “,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.8.tags.0″:{“slug”:”season-2020″,”title”:”Season 2020″,”__typename”: ” Tag”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\ ” ,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.8.tags.1″:{“slug”:”gamepk-635896″,”title”: “2020/10/21 tb@la” ,”__typename”:”Tag”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\”ji -man-choi-south-korea-world -series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.8.tags.2″:{“slug”:”playerid-596847″ ,”title”:”Ji-Man Choi “,”__typename”:”Tag”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\” ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.8.tags.3″:{“slug”:”teamid-139 “,”title”:”Tampa Bay Rays “,”__typename”:”Tag”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\” ji-man-choi-south-korea- world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.9″:{“content”:”

Despite not living in their home countries, young Latin American players at least have other Spanish-speaking players their own age to befriend as they advance to the minors. That’s not the case with Korean prospects like Choi, making the transition to a new country and career more difficult.

Still, that fun-loving personality that makes him such a hit at the Rays’ clubhouse was also there in Choi’s teenage years.

“I only remember him as a young 19-year-old in Peoria,” Heid said. “TV cameras are zooming in on him and I can see his features and that twinkle in his eyes. I’m like, ‘I can only imagine what’s going through his head right now.'”

Heid jokes that sometimes he wishes he’d seen a little less of that mischievous spirit. However, it makes for some great stories.

Choi still uses an interpreter for his interactions with the English-language media, but don’t be fooled, says Hunter Renfroe. Choi’s knowledge of English is spot on, even if Choi doesn’t think so himself. Heid confirms that Choi has always been quick to pick up language – and likes to use it for nefarious purposes.”,”type”:”markdown”,”__typename”:”Markdown”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({ \”locale\ “:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\ “}). parts.10”:{“contentDate”:”2020-10-25T22:00:21.22Z”,”description”:”Ji-Man Choi joins the show to share how South Korea reacted to the dramatic Game 4 ending and how the Rays hope to ride that excitement”,”duration”:”00:05:10″,”slug”:”ji-man-choi-on-game-4-ending”,”source”:null , “tags”:[{“type”:”id”,”generated”:true,”id”:”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\ ” :\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.10.tags.0″,”typename”:” Tag “},{“type”:”id”,”generated”:true,”id”:”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”: \ “ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.10.tags.1″,”typesa me”:”Tag”} ,{“type”:”id” ,”generated”:true,”id”:”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\” slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.10.tags.2″,”typename” :”Tag”},{“type”:”id”,” generated”:true,”id”:”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\ “:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world- seriestar\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.10.tags.3″,”typename”:”Tag” },{“type”:”id”,”generated” :true,”id”:”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\” ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series- star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.10.tags.4″,”typename”:”Tag”}] ,”templateUrl”:”https://img.mlbstatic. com/mlb-images/image/private/{formatInstructions}/mlb/rk5tvftukyrijigjqybm”,”title”:”Ji-Man Choi at the end of Game 4″,”type”:”video”,”url”:”/video / ji-man-choi-on-game-4-ending”,”__typename”:”Video”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\ ” :\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.10.tags.0″:{“slug”: ” PlayerID-5 96847″,”title”:”Ji-Man Choi”,”__typename”:”Tag”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”, \”slug\”: \”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.10.tags.1″:{ “slug”:”mlbn -intentional-talk”,”title”:”Intentional Talk”,”__typename”:”Tag”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\” ,\”slug\” :\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.10.tags.2″: {“slug”:” mlb-network”,”title”:”MLB Network”,”__typename”:”Tag”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”, \”slug\”: \”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”:\”story\ “}).parts.10.tags.3”:{“slug”:”mlbn -best-interview”,”title”:”MLBN Best Interview In Baseball”,”__typename”:”Tag”},”$ROOT_QUERY .getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\” slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\”: \”story\”}).parts.10.tags.4″:{“slug “:”teamid-139″,”title”:”Tampa Bay Rays”,”__typename”:”Tag”},”$ROOT_QUERY .getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”e n-us\”,\”slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star\”,\”type\” :\”story\”}).parts.11″ :{“Contents”:”

Heid recalls with a hearty laugh that one of Choi’s favorite pastimes in the clubhouse was translating sentences from Korean into Spanish; Korean to Portuguese; and vice versa.

“He has a knack for learning languages, but only the languages he wants to learn and the phrases he wants to learn,” Heid said. “So he came up with some pretty hilarious translations himself.

“He would tell his young teammates with a straight face that this is the Korean word for this and that. Making up bad words and things like that.”

Choi and his Latin teammates were regulars on the Korean barbecue scene centered around Peoria when he played in the 2010 Arizona League. You can see where this is going, right?

“All Latino boys love Korean barbecue and stuff like that, so they went into a restaurant and dropped their Korean on it, and people were like, ‘You shouldn’t say that!'” Heid recalls with a hearty laugh. “The 6-foot-4 tall Dominican outfielder says these words in Korean, which aren’t what that means.”

Baseball is grind at its finest in the middle of a 162-game season. That becomes all the more overwhelming in a pandemic-ridden, blister-locked season like this. Guys like Choi bring their teammates together, and the Rays are all effusive in their praise of this personality, who has been a fixture of Arizona clubhouses since the early days of his teens.”,”type”:”markdown”,”__typename” :”Markdown”},”$ROOT_QUERY.getForgeContentBySlug({\”locale\”:\”en-us\”,\”slug\”:\”ji-man-choi-south-korea-world-series-star \”,\”type\”:\”story\”}).parts.12.data”:{“html”:”
