Exclusive Getting to Know Jillian Cardarelli
From appearing on the Radio Disney Country stage at CMA Fest, to appearing on national television programs and the CMT Awards, to being one of the artists of Rolling Stone Country, Jillian Cardarelli has laid the groundwork for an amazing career in Nashville. When the singer released the video for her debut single “Rerun” in September 2017, it reached #1 on CMT Music’s fan-voted 12 Pack Countdown just 20 days after its release. Now she’s back with her latest single “I Never Do This” (released September 13) and heads into the next decade with new music.
We caught up with Jillian to talk about her musical journey, her love of charity and what’s to come in 2020.
CN: Can you tell our readers, who may not know you, a little bit about yourself?
JC: I’m from a small town in Massachusetts. I moved to Nashville six years ago to attend Belmont University and pursue a career in music.
CN: One of your passions is the art of karate – how long have you been practicing? When did you achieve black belt? Will you keep progressing? Need to register your hands? (I always think that’s great!)
JC: I started taking karate classes when I was eight years old. I earned my black belt during my freshman year of high school. I’d like to keep moving forward and have researched a few dojos in Nashville to keep going.
CN: Since we heard you’re a fan, let’s talk about Star Wars for a minute. Do you have a favorite trilogy/series? favorite character? villain?
JC: My favorite trilogy would be the original three: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It’s difficult to pick a favorite character, but Han Solo was my first crush when I was a kid.
CN: Have you been to any midnight premieres of recent Star Wars film releases?
JC: Absolutely! I’ve been to the last two midnight releases and I’m planning on going to the premiere of December’s.
CN: You are involved with several charities in the area (attending events, performing, etc.) including Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee, The Kevin Carter Foundation, PEDIGREE Foundation, Musicians On Call, and St. Jude Children’s Hospital. What is most important to you about giving back and these charities?
JC: All of these charities are very close to my heart. I think it’s so important when you have a platform to give back that you use it wisely. A great example is what Kevin Carter (former NFL Super Bowl champion / now CBS Sports Network analyst) along with his co-host Jay DeMarcus (Rascal Flatts) is doing for Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee by hosting their annual Waiting for Wishes has hosted celebrity waiter dinners in Nashville for 18 years. This is true proof of what a celebrity should do. It’s wonderful to be part of organizations and celebrity events that are passionate about their mission!
I love my dog and cats and the PEDIGREE Foundation helps dogs in need find forever homes. Musicians On Call allows me to go to local hospitals and sing to patients. It’s so amazing how music really heals!
St. Jude Children’s Hospital is also amazing. I was able to participate in their This Shirt Saves Lives campaign and tour the hospital last year. It’s amazing what they are doing to end childhood cancer.
CN: We understand that you’re also quite the golfer and that you participate in charity golf tournaments – where you won a tournament in Nashville last month. Congratulations!
JC: Thank you! Golf has been a great passion of mine since I was a child. The tournament we won last month was the 2nd Annual Music City Invitational at the Legends Club in Franklin to benefit people with Down Syndrome. Over the past year I have also participated and performed at various St. Jude golf tournaments around the country. Every time I can play golf and sing for a good cause, it’s very special to me.
CN: At what age did you discover music?
JC: I started singing when I was about three years old. There might be an embarrassing YouTube video of me singing Elvis at this age that my dad uploaded years ago.
CN: What was the first album you ever owned?
JC: Elvis Presley self-titled album from 1956.
CN: Which musicians, country or not, have influenced you personally and as an artist?
JC: Elvis has been my biggest inspiration since I was a little girl. I remember watching his ’68 comeback on DVD over and over again. Faith Hill, Shania and Reba are also among my biggest influences in country music.
CN: You credit your grandfather for passing on to you his love of country music, which he discovered while stationed in Georgia during World War II. With Veterans Day this month, we want to express our gratitude for his service. When did you realize your love of country music would lead to a career?
JC: Thank you. My grandpa was such a great, kind man and I am so grateful that he passed his love of the country on to me. My parents allowed me to dream big and I think it’s so important to have that support system, especially when you’re pursuing something like that. I began taking singing lessons at the age of six, performed in the church choir and took every opportunity to sing at school events. I realized that this could become a career when I was about 16 years old. I had a band from Berklee College of Music and we traveled around performing at all the local and regional fairs and festivals. That’s when I really fell in love with performing and I knew I had to move to Nashville.
CN: “Rerun”, your debut single in 2017, was written by none other than Maren Morris, Tina Parol and Jordan Reynolds. How did you come to this song? Given Maren’s place in the long-overdue rise of women in country music, what does recording the song mean to you?
JC: “Rerun” was sent to me by a friend in the industry and I fell in love with it immediately. It means a lot to me to have recorded and released this song. Simply put, I connect with the lyrics and felt like the fans would too.
CN: As songwriters, can you guide us through your songwriting process? Where do you get your inspiration from?
JC: I love writing about real life experiences, whether it’s something I’m going through, a friend is going through, or a co-writer is going through. When you can speak from the heart, it is easier to write.
CN: In September you released the single “I Never Do This” and we know that new music is coming out in early 2020. Can you tell us a little bit about it?
JC: Yes, I’m so excited to have new music out there and can’t wait to share more in 2020! I’m working with Alex Kline, an amazing female producer, and I feel like we’ve really found my sound as an artist over the past year. I’m so excited for everyone to hear!
CN: Are both singles part of a bigger release to come?
JC: We have about 5-6 songs that we will release individually in 2020.
CN: Do you have a dream collaboration in mind?
JC: George Strait
CN: What was the first concert you ever went to?
JC: Alan Jackson
CN: If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be and why?
JC: Authentic. I try to stay true to myself.

The upcoming Nashville singer-songwriter’s new song is about a determined woman who knows what she wants. And while mainstream country music continues to flirt with pop and electronic genres (especially tempo songs), “Cool Girl” embraces a fair balance between pop and country tendencies. The song utilizes a catchy book-ending chorus hook brought to life by Cardarelli’s confidence and live instrumentation (the song was cut with a live studio band at Starstruck Studios in Nashville).
