James Nathaniel Brown (born February 17, 1936) is a former American football player, sports analyst, and actor. He played at fullback for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL) from 1957 to 1965. He is considered one of the greatest running backs of all time and one of the greatest players in NFL history.[1] Brown was a Pro Bowl invitee every season he was in the league, was named the AP NFL Most Valuable Player three times, and won an NFL championship with the Browns in 1964. He led the league in rushing yards in eight of nine seasons, and by the time he retired he had broken most major rushing records. In 2002, The Sporting News named him the greatest professional footballer of all time.[2]

Brown received unanimous All-America honors while playing college football at Syracuse University, where he was an all-around player for the Syracuse Orangemen football team. He also excelled in basketball, track and field, and lacrosse. The football team later retired his number 44 jersey. In 1995 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Brown was born in St. Simons Island, Georgia to Swinton Brown, a professional boxer, and his wife Theresa, a homemaker.

At Manhasset Secondary School, Brown earned 13 letters by playing football, lacrosse, baseball, basketball, and track.[6]

Mr. Brown attributes his independence to growing up on Saint Simons Island, a community off the coast of Georgia, where he was raised by his grandmother and where racism did not directly affect him. At the age of eight, he moved to Manhasset, New York, on Long Island, where his mother worked as a maid. At Manhasset High School, he became a soccer star and athletic legend. College athletic career[edit]

As a sophomore at Syracuse University (1954), Brown was the second-best rusher on the team. As a junior, he rushed for 676 yards (5.2 per carry). In his senior year in 1956, Brown was a first-team consensus All-American. He finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting and set school records for the highest rushing average of the season (6.2) and most rushing touchdowns in a single game (6). He rushed for 986 yards — the third-most in the country, despite Syracuse only playing eight games — and had 14 touchdowns. In the regular-season finale, a 61-7 win over Colgate, he rushed for 197 yards, scored six touchdowns and scored seven extra points for a school-record 43 points. He then rushed for 132 yards in the Cotton Bowl, scoring three touchdowns and scoring three extra points, but a blocked extra point after Syracuse’s third touchdown was the difference as TCU won 28-27.

Perhaps more impressive was his success as a multi-sport athlete. In addition to his successes in football, he excelled in basketball, track and field, and especially lacrosse. As a sophomore, he was the second-top scorer for the basketball team (15 ppg) and earned a letter on the track team. In 1955 he placed fifth in the Nation Championship decathlon.[9] In his junior year, he averaged 11.3 points in basketball and was named a second-team All-American in lacrosse. In his senior year, he was named a first-team lacrosse All-American (scoring 43 goals in 10 games to earn second place nationally). Brown was so dominant in the game that lacrosse rules were changed so that a lacrosse player had to keep his stick in constant motion when carrying the ball (instead of holding it close to his body). There is currently no rule in lacrosse that requires a player to keep their stick moving. He is in the Lacrosse Hall of Fame.[12] The Carrier Dome has an 800-square-foot tapestry depicting Brown in football and lacrosse uniforms with the words “Greatest Player Ever.”[13]

While in college, Brown participated in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. After graduating from high school, he was commissioned as a lieutenant.[14] During his time in the NFL, Brown continued his military involvement as a member of the United States Army Reserve.[14] He served four years and was discharged with the rank of captain.[14]

Brown was picked up in the first round of the 1957 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns, sixth overall pick. In the ninth game of his rookie season, he ran for 237 yards against the Los Angeles Rams, setting an NFL single-game record unmatched for 14 years and a rookie record that stood for 40 years.

Brown broke the single-season rushing record in 1958, gaining 1,527 yards in the 12-game season, surpassing the previous NFL mark of 1,146 yards set by Steve Van Buren in 1949. That MVP season, Brown led all players in a staggering 17 touchdowns scored, beating his closest rival, Baltimore Colts wide receiver Raymond Berry by 8.[18]

Early films[edit]

Brown began his acting career before the 1964 season with the role of a buffalo soldier in an action western film called Rio Conchos. The film premiered at Cleveland’s Hippodrome Theater on October 23 in the presence of Brown and many of his teammates. The reaction was lukewarm. Brown, said one reviewer, was a viable actor, but the film’s overcooked plot and implausibleness was “a vigorous melodrama for the squeamish.”[25]

In early 1966, Brown was shooting his second film in London. MGM’s The Dirty Dozen cast Brown as Robert Jefferson, one of 12 convicts sent to France during World War II to assassinate German officers hiding in a castle near Rennes in the US before the D-Day invasion Brittany met. Production delays due to bad weather caused him to miss at least the first part of training camp on the Hiram College campus, which angered Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell, who fined Brown $1,500 (equivalent to $12,500 -dollars in 2021) for each week of camp he threatened not to hit. Brown, who had previously said that 1966 would be his last season, the final year of a three-year contract,[28] instead announced his retirement.[20][21]

Brown starred in several blaxploitation genres: Slaughter (1972), a big hit for AIP; Black Gunn (1972) for Columbia; Slaughter’s Big Rip Off (1973); The Slams (1973), back at MGM; I escaped from Devil’s Island (1973); and Three the Hard Way (1974), starring Fred Williamson and Jim Kelly. He faked his own image in the role of “Slammer” in I’m Gonna Git You Sucka (1998) and Hammer, Slammer & Slade, a television pilot released as a TV movie.

He made a spaghetti western with Williamson, Take a Hard Ride (1975). Blaxploitation’s popularity waned in the mid-’70s, and Brown made fewer films.

Following Harris’ final season, a challenge between Brown and Harris in a 40-yard dash was nationally televised this January. At 48, Brown was confident he could beat Harris, even though Harris was only 34 and just finishing his elite career. Harris finished in 5.16 seconds and Brown in 5.72 seconds, holding on with his Achilles tendon in the latter part of the race.[36]

In 1965, Brown was the first black boxing announcer on television when he announced a televised boxing match in the United States for the Terrell-Chuvalo fight Bob Arum.[39]

Brown married his first wife Sue Brown (née Jones) in September 1959.[47] She filed for divorce in 1968, accusing him of “gross neglect.” Together they had three children, twins Kim and Kevin (born 1960) and a son, James Jr. (born 1962).[48] Their divorce was finalized in 1972.[49] Brown was ordered to pay alimony of $2,500 a month and $100 a week for child support.[50]

Hall of Famer Walter Payton, for example, averaged just 88 yards per game during his career, with an average of 4.4 yards per carry. Emmitt Smith averaged just 81.2 yards per game with an average of 4.2 yards per carry. Brown held the yards-per-carry record with a running back (at least 750 carries) from his retirement in 1965 until Jamaal Charles broke the record in 2012, but he still stands over 50 years after his last NFL game in 2nd place all-time.

The only top 10 rusher of all time to even match Brown’s totals, Barry Sanders, has career averages of 99.8 yards per game and 5.0 yards per carry. However, Barry Sanders’ father, William, was frequently quoted as saying that Jim Brown was “the best I’ve ever seen.”[72]

Lacrosse was considered by many to be Brown’s best sport, and he was inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the U.S. inducted into the Lacrosse National Hall of Fame.

From 1957 to 1965, Brown played for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns and led the league in rushing yards every year except 1962. At 6’1″ and weighing 230 pounds, Brown was a bloody runner who had the speed to overtake opponents and the strength to run over them. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards in seven seasons and set NFL one-year records by rushing 1,527 yards in 1958 (12-game plan) and 1,863 yards in 1963 (14-game plan), a record set by O.J. Simpson in 1973. On November 24, 1957, he set an NFL record by rushing for 237 yards in a single game, and he matched that total on November 19, 1961. By the end of his career, he had 126 touchdowns, including 106 by rushing, had rushed for a record 12,312 yards for a 5.22 yard average in 2,359 rushing attempts and had a record combined yardage (rushing plus pass receptions) of 14,811 yards. Brown’s rushing and combined yardage records held until 1984, when both were surpassed by the Chicago Bears’ Walter Payton.

At 30 and seemingly at the peak of his sporting ability, Brown retired from football to pursue an acting career. He starred in many action and adventure films, including The Dirty Dozen (1967) and 100 Rifles (1969), and the blaxploitation films Slaughter (1972) and Three the Hard Way (1974). In addition, he has appeared in comedies such as Mars Attacks! (1996) and She Hate Me (2004) and has appeared frequently on television. Brown was also active in issues faced by African Americans, forming groups to support black-owned businesses and rehabilitate gang members.

During his career, Brown has had various run-ins with the law, many of which have involved allegations of domestic violence. In 1999 he was found guilty of vandalizing his wife’s car. Although he was offered parole if he followed the court’s requirements, which included counseling, Brown declined and instead served nearly four months in prison in 2002.
