Jimmy Diresta combines genius, vision, originality and the spirit of craftsmanship. Best known for creating functional art of all kinds, he is an inventor, artist, maker, TV personality, podcaster, author, video producer, prolific YouTuber, and social media star.
Whether he’s making hand tools or building a wooden canoe, Diresta’s work is unique and always documented on his YouTube channel.
“I’ve been a lifelong doer,” Diresta said. “It started in elementary school and I haven’t done anything else since.”
His best-known project was making an AK-47 guitar, or “gattar,” for musician Wyclef Jean. According to the rapper, the working musical instrument symbolizes music as a weapon. The ubiquitous Kalashnikov was chosen because it has become a symbol of the “revolution” since its introduction in 1947.

More creative space needed
As Diresta’s online presence grew, he faced a major problem – he needed more space.
“In 2004 I bought a farm in the country with the intention of building a barn that would become my main workshop,” he explained. “I was working in the city at the time, and it wasn’t until I started making money on YouTube that I was able to fulfill my dream.”
In 2017, Diresta took the plunge and began construction of the 40×72 pole barn — simply dubbed the Black Barn — that would ultimately become an event space, rather than the workshop he originally envisioned. The barn is now where he hosts blacksmithing and woodworking classes on the weekends.
Like many of the things Diresta is involved in, the building project became a collaborative effort between a number of other creators and social media influencers.
Kyle Stumpenhorst (@RRBuildings) was hired to build the frame and roof and used the building’s construction to launch his own YouTube channel. David Parraguirre (@TheMexicanCarpenter101) completed the building, including flooring, paint, siding, windows and placement of the 0.5″ radiant tubes on 12″ centers before the store’s slab was poured.
“I chose these craftsmen for the project because they are meticulous and exceptionally talented,” Diresta said. “I wanted the job to be done right, and I wouldn’t have been so meticulous on a construction project myself.”
Every time he mentioned building a stilt house, people recommended installing a radiant heating system to combat New York State’s great winters. Diresta had installed the nozzles but held them back at the boiler.
During the construction of the barn, work was interrupted due to an extremely rainy day. Diresta saved the day by hosting a meet-and-greet of sorts for people in the area who wanted to chat to themselves, Kyle, or David. In attendance was Moe Hirsch, owner of Moe’s CAMs (Consulting and Mechanical Services) in Pomona, NY.
“Moe’s passion for hydronics was immediately apparent and we discussed installing a boiler for the radiant system,” Diresta said. “We left it there for almost two years, but in 2019 I contacted Moe and he came back to the farm to start developing a system.”

Hirsch started with a heat load calculation. The building has ceiling insulation on the walls and spray foam in the ceiling. Diresta wanted to regularly maintain 60°F indoors with the ability to bring the room up to 22°C during events.
Hirsch found that the charge was 105 MBH. His plan was to install a Viessmann condensing boiler and a Taco VT 2218 single circulation pump in Delta-T operation to operate the 12-circuit radiant heating system.
“I use Taco Delta-T circulating pumps on all my radiant work, but on this project it was particularly important to have a pump that responds to return water temperature,” Hirsch said. “I used a 20°F delta here. Nobody walks barefoot in the workshop, so a slight deviation in surface temperature is irrelevant and a small price to pay for the efficiency gained by wringing every last drop of condensate out of the heat exchanger.”
The Black Barn does not have a thermostat. Jimmy simply regulates the temperature of the building via the boiler’s mobile app, which interfaces with the outdoor unit’s reset controller. Instead of the boiler receiving an open/close signal, it receives direct feedback and sets a supply water temperature based on the outdoor reset control.
The hydraulic system is quite simple. Jimmy wanted as few moving parts as possible. A single circulator powers the entire system. It pumps directly in and out of the boiler with high volume, low pressure drop and circulates the slab. There are no mixing valves or closely spaced tees. In addition, a Taco 4900 air separator is installed high on the nearby boiler line. Although this installation was new, Hirsch finds the slightly wider fit to match the 4900’s fit width to be a major benefit in swap situations.
“The width of this air separator allows me to cut out most of the failed separators and install the new one without having to add any piping,” he explained.
Hirsch also installed a 20-gallon Axiom glycol feed mixed with Hercules antifreeze to provide protection down to 0°F.

“In one sense, this job wasn’t challenging at all,” explains Hirsch. “Jimmy was very accommodating. He had prepared and painted the wall behind the boiler, there was ample room to work with, and there were no steps to navigate, no moldings to protect, etc. On the other hand, everything was outside for the duration of the project, and the job is very remote without Supply houses within an hour and a half. But Jimmy understood all of that and was patient.”
Like all appliances on the property, the new water heater is propane fired. A master switch in the mechanical room allows Diresta to disconnect the hydronic system and use generator power.
“Ice storms are not uncommon here and can disrupt the power supply,” says Hirsch. “The boiler uses very little electricity and the single ECM pump uses just a little bit more. Jimmy can run this whole heating system with the smallest backup generator.”
The boiler installation was completed in mid-December and Jimmy stayed for much of the heating season to appreciate the improvement.
“Everyone said I would be stupid if I didn’t install a radiation system in the store,” Diresta said. “I have been told that this is the most economical and comfortable way to heat a large open space like this. Now that it’s up and running I can’t agree more! It’s always comfortable, even when it’s 10°F outside. And that’s what I was looking for, a haven from the cold.”
