Just two months before Cameron Boyce’s death, Haute Living published an interview with the Disney star in which he spoke candidly about giving back, inspiring others and fulfilling his dreams.
In his most recent interview, the Descendants star acknowledged the “long line of difference makers” in his family by cultivating his passion to help make the world a better place.
“I’m following in the footsteps of some really strong men and women who showed me what it means to give back,” he told media at the time. “It is the best way to realize yourself. Every time I speak to someone who shares this similar passion, we talk about how there aren’t many more euphoric feelings. When you make a positive change in someone else’s life, your life changes for the better too.”
A “difference maker” is his grandmother Jo-Ann Boyce. His grandmother was a member of the Clinton 12—a group of African-American students who became the first desegregated Southern state-sponsored high school in 1956.
“She’s a big part of me,” Boyce said. “As an African American and a Jew, I have many ancestors and family members to whom I can find strength and, more importantly, a grateful attitude towards life. Each of them scraped and scraped to get my sister and I in the position we are in today.”
He also spoke openly about how he tried to inspire others, for example by bridging the gap between wanting to give back and knowing how to do something.
“A lot of people have the heart to give back, but a lot don’t know how,” he told Haute Living. “I try to be the bridge for these people — whether that means engaging them in one of my campaigns or inspiring them by showing them a blueprint for how to get others involved.”
Throughout his life, Boyce worked on many philanthropic initiatives, including raising awareness of the global water crisis and raising more than $30,000 for the Thirst Project.
In addition to speaking about philanthropy, Boyce shared some words of wisdom for those chasing a dream.
“Fail and fail and fail until you fail no more,” he said. “That’s the cycle. You will fail until you don’t, and then you will start the process all over again.”

His contribution to the series was a segment that told his grandmother’s story as part of the Clinton 12. Cameron, Jo-Ann and Cameron’s parents and sister went back to Clinton and visited the Green McAdoo Cultural Center which features sculptures of Jo-Ann and the 11 other students who made history at Clinton.

Of the experience of being back in Clinton with her family years later, Jo-Ann told People, “It was overwhelming. It was emotional…I could go back and remember the days when me and my friends walked down that hill together.”

In the fall of 1956, following the US Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, federal judge Robert Taylor ordered Clinton High School to desegregate “with all intent.” Clinton High School’s integration had to come first among Tennessee public schools. Anti-integration activists from inside and outside Clinton protested the decision to integrate the high school (Tennessee Historical Quarterly, Volume LVI).
They were inspired by New Jersey white supremacists John Kasper and Asa Carter, both of whom spoke publicly in Clinton on September 1, 1956 against the decision to integrate the high school (Tennessee Historical Quarterly, vol. LVI).
After the violence was narrowly averted on the Anderson County Courthouse lawn on Sept. 1, National Guard troops were called into the city for two months to maintain order. The protests led to a criminal contempt jury trial in which seven out of 10 accused were convicted.
The twelve black students who attended Clinton High School that fall became known as the “Clinton 12.” Every morning at school they would walk down Broad Street from Foley Hill to Clinton High. On the morning of December 4, 1956, Rev. Paul Turner, the white minister of the First Baptist Church, was badly beaten after escorting the twelve students to school.

A bronze statue of the “Clinton Twelve” is now on display in front of a newly designed front entrance of the former Green McAdoo School, where the twelve students attended elementary school. While the school was rebuilding, students from Clinton High School were bussed to Oak Ridge, where the school operated in the recently vacated building that housed Linden Elementary School. “You knew how things were. You knew how things would go. You were black, lived in a southern town, and you knew your limits. You knew if you wanted to drink water and there wasn’t a water well for you, you wouldn’t be able to drink water,” said Jo Ann Allen Boyce, one of the 12 black Clinton students who chose to attend the then-all-white Clinton in 1956 high school
“But when you have to get up and go to school and there are hundreds of people around you, yelling at you, throwing things at you, that’s when you start to realize that your blackness is a bigger problem than you ever thought.”
Clinton High School was the first public high school in the United States to attempt integration. That same year, the Supreme Court responded to “Brown vs. Board of Education,” ruling that segregation in schools was unconstitutional. “Our supporters said it was the ‘law of the country,'” she recalled. “But it was the right thing to do. What I wanted to hear from people was that it was the right thing to do.”
Boyce released a book this month called This Promise of Change: One Girl’s Story in the Fight for School Equality. She co-wrote it with Debbie Levy, a popular children’s book author.
“The promise was that after the Supreme Court passed the bill, there could be no more segregation, and we hoped that if we could go to that school, our lives would be better,” she said. “But things have exploded and needlessly deteriorated.”
Boyce said she had a happy childhood. She and her family loved living in Clinton.
“I had great parents and really good friends,” she said. “We were very close to our church. It was the right spot on Sunday and we had plays and things like that. We had a few things to do but what was missing was the community – being able to go in the pool, that kind of thing.”
When Boyce had the opportunity to attend Clinton High School instead of making the 18-mile commute to a school in Knoxville, she was thrilled. Not being able to go to the city pool, being called racial slurs, having to drink from certain water fountains — those were isolated incidents, according to Boyce. But just having to fear for your life just by going to school, just because of the color of your skin, that’s “traumatic for our psyche,” she says.
“We then found out that this wasn’t quite the town we were thinking for,” she said quietly. “We got along pretty well in Clinton. There weren’t too many people who were antagonistic. We weren’t called the N-word very often, although it was common. We kind of hoped it would go like this. People hadn’t been cruel to us. We mostly got along with the people.”
But then the bad guys showed up. New Jersey white supremacists John Kaspar and Asa Carter came to Clinton when they heard the school was going to be desegregated and angered people. Boyce said she knew there was a racist element in town, but that it wasn’t the norm. There was a road her father had told her never to walk down because “they would hurt us,” she said. But it was the outsiders who made it dangerous for the students.
“I remember when I started, the kids in my classroom would ask me questions,” she said. “They wanted to meet me, which was nice.”
Some of the girls talked to her until they didn’t anymore.
“To be honest, I think if adults had stayed out of it, we could have gotten along,” she said. “At least we could have gone to school peacefully.”
Those who tried to be friendly, or at least nice, to Boyce and the others got scared.
“And I don’t blame them,” she said. “It was a painful, very sad time in my life.”
Two teachers stand out to her as particularly supportive: Mrs. Anderson and Ms. Juanita Moser. According to Boyce, Anderson took it upon herself to look after her mental and emotional health, and Moser showed compassion and genuine concern.
Boyce stayed four months before her mother, fearing for Boyce’s life, decided to move the family to Los Angeles, California.
“Things started to get very violent and the police kept coming to pick us up and take us out of school,” she said.
“We would all have to crawl into the police car and be taken home. So my mother was very afraid that something bad could happen to us.”
They moved in December 1956, the same month Rev. Paul Turner, a white First Baptist Church pastor, was beaten for accompanying the 12 to school, and a year and a half before the school caused by one in 100 Severely damaged by the explosion, sticks of dynamite were placed in three places.
Coming to school in Los Angeles, Boyce was blown away by the diversity. There were many Asian students, along with students from many other ethnic backgrounds. She pursued her childhood dream of becoming a pediatric nurse, which she did for 30 years, and she sang jazz in a cabaret theatre.
And while the move was difficult, her children and grandchildren have thrived in California. One grandson, Cameron Boyce, is a well-known actor who has starred in Disney’s Descendants, Bunked and Jessie, among others. He also created a short documentary about the Clinton 12 for Disney. Another granddaughter goes to Broadway, Boyce believes, while a son works for a bakery and a daughter for an advertising agency.
This year she celebrates 60 years of marriage with her husband Victor.
Boyce hopes that by reading her book and hearing her story, people will begin to understand that race, religion, and other differences are not an issue.
“The problem is how we think about people who look different or sound different,” she said. “It’s up to each of us. What we should do is come together and decide that this earth would be so much better if we cared about each other and were friends.”
That’s her biggest regret — not having a chance to befriend the students at Clinton High.
“It makes me sad when I think about it,” she said. “Because we could have been friends. Hate is a learned thing; you weren’t born with it.”
