Bonamassa’s album Different Shades of Blue is his first solo studio album since So, It’s Like That to feature only original songs (except for a brief instrumental cover by Jimi Hendrix). Bonamassa wrote the album in Nashville with three songwriters: Journey’s Jonathan Cain, James House (known for his work with Diamond Rio), Dwight Yoakam, Martina McBride and Jerry Flowers (who wrote for Keith Urban). Bonamassa was first introduced to Beth Hart’s music after seeing her on several television appearances. The two’s paths often crossed when they played separate shows in Europe and Bonamassa was very impressed with Hart when he saw their show at the Blue Balls Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland. While recording his album Dust Bowl (and listening to the Rolling Stones’ expanded edition of Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!, which includes tracks by Ike & Tina Turner), Bonamassa was inspired to record it with a woman to try. Hart came to mind and the two musicians met in a Dublin hotel bar. Bonamassa brought up the idea, which Hart immediately accepted, although at first she got the impression that he was asking her to sing backup vocals on his next album. Upon realizing that he intended her to sing lead vocals, she said, “I was devastated.”[31]
Bonamassa, Hart and producer Kevin Shirley wrote down lists of soul songs they liked to develop material for the album, called Don’t Explain. The group settled on twelve songs, although only ten were recorded. Bonamassa is a member of the jazz funk band Rock Candy Funk Party. In 2013 they released their debut album We Want Groove. “Rock Candy Funk Party Takes New York – Live at the Iridium” followed. The show was taped over three nights at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City. The band played during Conan on February 10, 2014.[37]

[45] For a time he compulsively bought guitars, including many he would never play, and then sold many of them to focus on guitars he would could actually use. [citation needed] During an online interview in 2020, Bonamassa said his favorite guitar is his 1951 Fender Nocaster nicknamed “The Bludgeon” (which has been modified with a humbucking pickup in the neck position). In 2021, Fender and Bonamassa announced the release of a limited-edition reproduction of “The Bludgeon” by Custom Shop Master Builder Greg Fessler.[46]

Unlike many blues-rock guitarists before him, Bonamassa’s influences are more British and Irish blues acts than American artists. In an interview in Guitarist magazine, he named three albums that most influenced his playing: The Beano Album by John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher’s Irish Tour ’74, and Goodbye by Cream.[54] He also noted that Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Texas Flood was a big influence when Bonamassa was young. Among other bands, he cited the early blues playing of Jethro Tull as an influence and cited both Martin Barre and Mick Abrahams as important musicians to him.
He explained his influences:
You know, my heroes were the English – Paul Kossoff, Peter Green, Eric Clapton. There’s so many – there’s Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher – another Irish musician who’s played the same stuff, but don’t tell him that. But these guys were my guys – Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page. There’s a certain sophistication to their approach to the blues that I really like, more than the American blues I’ve heard. B.B. King is a big influence – he’s probably my biggest traditional influence. I love Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson and T-Bone Walker and stuff like that, but I couldn’t sit down. I’ve always made myself listen to entire albums of theirs where I’d rather listen to Humble Pie with “I’m Ready” than Muddy Waters, you know? I think the English interpretation of the blues just hit me a lot better, you know?[57]
In an interview with Express & Star in October 2008 he said:

Keeping the Blues Alive Records[edit]
In June 2020, Dion released Blues with Friends through Keeping the Blues Alive Records (KTBA),[59][1] a new record label founded by Bonamassa and Roy Weisman for Dion and other blues musicians to showcase their talents.[60 ] The album features Van Morrison, Jeff Beck, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen and others (including liner notes by Bob Dylan).[61][62][63][64] The album peaked at #1 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart (9 weeks at #1 and 59 weeks total)[65] and #4 on iTunes.[66] It also charted in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Australia.[67][68][69][70][71]
Dion also released You Know It’s Christmas (starring Bonamassa and co-written with Mike Aquilina) in 2020. Dion produced a music video for all the songs and posted them on his website and social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube.
Dion’s song “Blues Comin’ On” (featuring Bonamassa) from Blues with Friends was nominated for a 2021 Blues Music Award. The album was also named Favorite Blues Album.[78]

Joseph Leonard Bonamassa (BAH-nə-MAH-sə;[5] born May 8, 1977) is an American blues-rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He started his career at the age of 12 when he worked for B.B. King opened.[6] Since 2000, Bonamassa has released 15 solo albums through his independent record label, J&R Adventures, 11 of which have reached #1 on the Billboard Blues chart.[6][7]
Bonamassa has played alongside many notable blues and rock artists[8] and received three Grammy nominations.[9][10] He is known among guitarists for his extensive collection of vintage guitars and amps.[11]
Early life[edit]
Bonamassa was born in New Hartford, New York and grew up in Utica, New York.[12][13] He started playing guitar at the age of four, encouraged by his father, who was an avid music fan and introduced him to British blues-rock records by Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, which greatly inspired him. At age 11, Bonamassa was mentored and coached by American guitar legend Danny Gatton. By the time he was 12, he had his own band called Smokin’ Joe Bonamassa, which only performed on weekends in western New York and Pennsylvania, including cities like Scranton and Buffalo, since he had school on weekdays. Bonamassa played a purple 1972 Fender Stratocaster which he nicknamed “Rosie” and which was a gift from his father.
Bonamassa opened about 20 shows for B.B. King in 1989. In 1991 he performed at the Mickey Mouse Club, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Before he turned 18, Bonamassa played in a band called Bloodline with Miles Davis’ sons, Robby Krieger and Berry Oakley. Although Bloodline did not become a famous act, Bonamassa’s guitar playing attracted some attention.[15]
Music career[edit]
Bonamassa’s debut studio album A New Day Yesterday was released in 2000. It features original tunes and covers by artists such as Rory Gallagher, Jethro Tull, and Warren Haynes.[16] The album features a guest appearance by Gregg Allman on the song “If Heartaches Were Nickels” and was produced by Tom Dowd.[17] The album reached #9 on the Billboard Blues chart.[18]
Between 2002 and 2006, Bonamassa had three studio albums that reached #1 on the Billboard Blues chart, and all five of his solo studio albums made the top 10.[19] In 2009, Bonamassa fulfilled one of his childhood dreams by playing at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where Eric Clapton performed a duet with him.[20] Bonamassa’s live album Beacon Theatre: Live from New York was released in 2012. The show featured one of Bonamassa’s musical heroes, Paul Rodgers (formerly of the bands Free and Bad Company), as a guest.
The live acoustic album An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House was released on March 26, 2013 as a CD/DVD/Blu-ray set. This concert marked the first time Bonamassa played an all acoustic show. The acoustic ensemble that performed the show was assembled with the help of Bonamassa’s longtime producer Kevin Shirley.[21] The final three-night stand of Bonamassa’s spring 2013 tour took place at the famous Beacon Theater in New York City.[21] During the summer of 2013 Bonamassa played four shows in London with three different bands (and a horn section at one show) covering four different sides of his music. Each show had a unique setlist. The shows were taped for a DVD release, and the DVD set was released as “Tour de Force” in October 2013.
Bonamassa’s album Different Shades of Blue is his first solo studio album since So, It’s Like That to feature only original songs (except for a brief instrumental cover by Jimi Hendrix). Bonamassa wrote the album in Nashville with three songwriters: Journey’s Jonathan Cain, James House (known for his work with Diamond Rio), Dwight Yoakam, Martina McBride and Jerry Flowers (who wrote for Keith Urban). Bonamassa attempted to create serious blues-rock in the project rather than three-minute radio hits.[25] The album was recorded at a music studio in the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas.[23] The album reached #8 on the Billboard 200, #1 on the blues chart, and #1 on the indie chart.[26]
In May 2015, Bonamassa won a Blues Music Award in the Instrumentalist – Guitar category.[27] In April 2018, Bonamassa’s signature amp, the ’59 Twin-Amp JB Edition, was released by Fender Musical Instruments Corporation.[28] On June 27, 2018, Bonamassa premiered at the Grand Ole Opry. He made a cameo appearance after being introduced by Chase Bryant, playing with him on his final song of the set, “I Need a Cold Beer”.
Bonamassa released the live album and movie Now Serving: Royal Tea Live from the Countryman on June 11, 2021. The show aired live at the time and raised $32,000 for Bonamassa’s Fueling Musicians program, which has helped financially troubled musicians during the COVID-19 pandemic.[30]
Collaborations with Beth Hart[ edit ]
Bonamassa was first introduced to Beth Hart’s music after seeing her on several television appearances. The two’s paths often crossed when they played separate shows in Europe and Bonamassa was very impressed with Hart when he saw their show at the Blue Balls Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland. While recording his album Dust Bowl (and listening to the Rolling Stones’ expanded edition of Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!, which includes tracks by Ike & Tina Turner), Bonamassa was inspired to record it with a woman to try. Hart came to mind and the two musicians met in a Dublin hotel bar. Bonamassa brought up the idea, which Hart immediately accepted, although at first she got the impression that he was asking her to sing backup vocals on his next album. Upon realizing that he intended her to sing lead vocals, she said, “I was devastated.”[31]
Bonamassa, Hart and producer Kevin Shirley wrote down lists of soul songs they liked to develop material for the album, called Don’t Explain. The group settled on twelve songs, although only ten were recorded. Bonamassa and Hart each chose five songs for the album.[32] Hart’s favorite tracks on the album included Bill Withers’ “For My Friend” and Ray Charles’ “Sinner’s Prayer.” Bonamassa wanted to do versions of Brook Benton’s “I’ll Take Care of You” and “Well Well” written by Delaney Bramlett & Bonnie Bramlett.
Her follow-up album Seesaw was nominated for a 2013 Grammy in the Best Blues Album category.[34] Hart and Bonamassa released Black Coffee on January 26, 2018. It was produced by Kevin Shirley.
Other projects[ edit ]
Bonamassa is a member of the jazz funk band Rock Candy Funk Party. In 2013 they released their debut album We Want Groove. “Rock Candy Funk Party Takes New York – Live at the Iridium” followed. The show was taped over three nights at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City. The band played during Conan on February 10, 2014.[37]
Bonamassa produced podcasts with another guitar enthusiast, Matt Abramovitz, between January and July 2015. Pickup Radio episodes are about “the life and lore of the guitar.” Bonamassa and Abramovitz discuss their favorite guitars, guitarists, and occasional non-guitarists associated with the blues and rock genres.[40]

Bonamassa is known for its extensive collection of vintage amps and guitars. He started collecting early on. His parents owned a music store in upstate New York now called Bonamassa Guitars. [45] For a time he compulsively bought guitars, including many he would never play, and then sold many of them to focus on guitars he would could actually use. [citation needed] During an online interview in 2020, Bonamassa said his favorite guitar is his 1951 Fender Nocaster nicknamed “The Bludgeon” (which has been modified with a humbucking pickup in the neck position). In 2021, Fender and Bonamassa announced the release of a limited-edition reproduction of “The Bludgeon” by Custom Shop Master Builder Greg Fessler.[46]
