Johannes Thingnes Bø

Norwegian biathlete

Johannes Thingnes Bø (born May 16, 1993) is a Norwegian biathlete. He represents Markane IL [no] and is the younger brother of biathlete Tarjei Bø. At the Beijing 2022 Olympics, they became the first siblings to win individual medals at the same biathlon event.[1] Thingnes Bø has won the Biathlon World Cup in 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21. Thingnes Bø is described as strong on his skis and is the third most successful male biathlete of all time in the World Cup with 55 individual World Cup wins, including wins at the Winter Olympics.[2]

Career [edit]

Thingnes Bø won several international medals in 2010 and 2011. In 2012 he became Junior World Champion for the third time. In April 2012 he was drafted for the Norwegian senior national team.[3] At the age of 18 he is one of the youngest Norwegians ever drafted for the national biathlon team.[4]

Season 2018/19: New records for World Cup dominance

The new king of biathlon[ edit ]

After coming very close to beating Fourcade in the previous World Cup season, Thingnes Bø was widely regarded as Fourcade’s main contender for the overall World Cup in 2018/19.[5] But an injury-plagued autumn with a back injury left serious question marks about Thingnes Bø’s form going into the new season.[6] These questions were asked to shame when Thingnes Bø found himself winning the opening sprint race in Sjusjøen (not part of the IBU World Cup calendar).[7] In the first World Cup events, Thingnes Bø confirmed his great form by winning six out of eight individual races before Christmas. With 428 points in eight races, Thingnes Bø leads the World Cup with a 116-point lead over Russian and former doping offender Alexander Loginov.[8] Meanwhile, expected rival Martin Fourcade was fifth, behind Thingnes Bø with 165 points. Thingnes Bø was now the hot favorite to win the overall World Cup despite having contested only 8 of the season’s 26 individual races.

Podium series in January [ edit ]

After the Christmas break, Thingnes Bø continued to dominate World Cup events. From and with the first World Cup events in Oberhof to the World Cup events in Soldier Hollow, Thingnes Bø never left the podium in an individual race.[9] By this time Thingnes Bø had won 12 out of 16 individual races (with one sprint race at Canmore being canceled) with 9 individual races remaining. However, Thingnes Bø failed to continue his streak of podium finishes at Soldier Hollow, where an underperforming standing stage with four penalties cost him victory in the first sprint race. In the pursuit that followed, Thingnes Bø put in another mediocre performance on the shooting range and finished fourth. Thingnes Bø later showed great sportsmanship, admitting that he had not fired all five of his shots in the last standing. As punishment for his offence, he agreed with the IBU to receive 0 World Cup points instead of the 43 that his fourth place would have otherwise earned him.[10] Poor standing shooting at Soldier Hollow quickly led to speculation among pundits and fans alike as to whether Thingnes Bø would encounter the same shooting problems at the upcoming World Championships in Östersund, where wind conditions are generally very difficult.[11]

World Championship in Östersund[ edit ]

Thingnes Bø made a strong start to the 2019 World Championships as he passed everyone to take home the title as World Sprint Champion – despite one penalty (everyone else in the top eight shot clean) Thingnes Bø won the sprint ahead of new rival Alexander Loginov , who was still second in the overall World Cup at the time. The next race was the pursuit where Thingnes Bø was the overwhelming favorite for a second consecutive gold medal due to a large time advantage from the sprint race. Thingnes Bø lived up to his favorite status in the first part of the race, leading the race with almost a minute to go to the last standing stage. However, another mishap at the shooting range saw Ukrainian underdog Dmytro Pidruchnyi leave the shooting range in first place, followed by Thingnes Bø in second place, 15 seconds back. Thingnes Bø was surprisingly unable to catch Pidruchnyi on the last lap and had to settle for a silver medal after a dramatic comeback on the last lap.[12] Thingnes Bø then delivered two disappointing performances in the 20K individual (9th place) and mass start (13th place). However, in the team competitions, Thingnes Bø won three more gold medals.

New record holder[ edit ]

With Thingnes Bø now winning 13 races all season and effectively securing the crystal globe as overall World Cup winner, only three races remained on home soil at Holmenkollen before the end of the season. The last World Cup event at Holmenkollen went great for Thingnes Bø, who took victory in all three races. With 16 individual victories, he became the record holder for the most individual World Cup victories won in a season, after beating Martin Fourcade’s previous record of 14 victories two years earlier in the 2016/17 season.[13]

2019/20 season: parental leave and another world title

Pre-season speculation[edit]

Arguably the most important topic of conversation in the new season (2019/20) has been whether Thingnes Bø can maintain its dominance from the previous season.[14] Most bookies, pundits and fans were predicting another Thingnes Bø win at the World Cup, although knowing that Thingnes Bø had to leave several World Cup events in January due to parental leave his favorite status had dwindled. fifteen] Thingnes Bø dismissed the idea that due to his absence in January he would even be fighting for the overall World Cup title, instead insisting that his goals were instead the World Championships,[16] held at one of biathlon’s most iconic venues. Antholz-Antholz.

The unofficial season opener at Sjusjøen was not a success for Thingnes Bø, who was feeling heavy on the track and finished only fourth in the sprint race, beaten by rival Fourcade, who finished third with similar shooting.[17] At the first World Cup competitions in Östersund, Thingnes Bø turned things in his favor and convincingly took the yellow jersey with a clear victory in the sprint race ahead of his older brother Tarjei. Just when Thingnes Bø looked like he was back at his best, disaster struck in the individual 20K, with relatively poor Norwegian skis ruining Thingnes Bø’s competition. The French waxing team had found the perfect formula for the tricky snow conditions and as a result Thingnes Bø was overtaken by Fourcade who took the yellow jersey from Thingnes Bø in an all-French podium.[18]

Dominance before Christmas[ edit ]

Apart from the material damage in Östersund, Thingnes Bø found himself back on top at the next World Cup stage in Hochfilzen, where he won both individual competitions. In the World Cup stage that followed, Thingnes Bø again spoiled the French party at Le Grand-Bornand, Annecy. Last season’s outstanding ski speed began to manifest itself again as Thingnes Bø, despite two penalties, finished an impressive fourth in the sprint race. In the pursuit, Thingnes Bø clinched another World Cup win, and the following mass start, in which Thingnes Bø won by over 40 seconds over Emilien Jacquelin, cemented his status as the top biathlete in the world. Before the Christmas break, Thingnes Bø had won five of seven individual competitions and secured a 61-point advantage over his brother Tarjei, who finished second in the overall World Cup.[19]

World Championships[edit]

Thingnes Bø was the most successful male athlete at the World Championships with a total of six medals, including three medals in individual events.[20] However, success did not come immediately for Thingnes Bø. Still not in top form after his absence in January, Thingnes Bø put in an underperforming sprint race and finished only fifth. The pursuit race showed an improvement in form as Thingnes Bø managed to take the silver medal. Despite his status as the top skier in biathlon, Thingnes Bø lost the battle with Frenchman Emilien Jacquelin on the last loop, where a tactical error in the final left Thingnes Bø vulnerable to Jacquelin’s explosive sprint.[21] Thingnes Bø took another silver medal in the 20K individual, where he was beaten by rival Fourcade. A miss in the last standing probably cost Thingnes Bø the gold medal as a clean shooting would have sent him to the final loop ahead of Fourcade.[22] With Thingnes Bø failing to win any individual gold medals in the last individual race of the championship, the men’s mass start, he was under a lot of pressure. Thingnes Bø delivered well and secured the gold medal with clean 20/20 shooting and fast running. Having also won medals in all team competitions in which he participated, Thingnes Bø managed to win six medals out of a possible seven at the championships.

Nove Mesto and Wax Gate[ edit ]

In early March, Thingnes Bø was in even better skiing form at the next World Cup events in Nové Město na Moravě, Czech Republic (held without spectators at the venue as a safety measure against the COVID-19 pandemic[23]). Thingnes Bø drove incredibly fast and shot clean in the opening sprint, which automatically catapulted him to another World Cup win. In the mass start race that followed, Thingnes Bø delivered another feat, winning the race with three penalties and passing French nemesis Emilien Jacquelin on the final lap. The race, similar to the individual 20 km in Östersund in the same season, was unusual as the Norwegian and German waxing teams were unusually successful in their ski waxing strategy. However, Thingnes Bø’s poor shooting throughout the race meant that Thingnes Bø had to catch up after each shooting and so he finally managed to catch and pass Emilien Jacquelin on the final lap.

Corona cancellations and World Cup securing

The competitions in Kontiolahti, the penultimate World Cup stage on the calendar, were also held without spectators for fear of the spread of COVID-19, and the mixed events were finally canceled.[25] For similar reasons, the competitions at Holmenkollen were also canceled, leaving only two races in Kontiolahti in the season. Before these races, Thingnes Bø had already managed to overtake Fourcade in the overall World Cup thanks to the points system that deducts the two worst results of the season (Thingnes Bø could deduct 0 points for not having started in two (four) competitions in January) .[26] However, Thingnes Bø led the World Cup by a narrow margin and he needed two top results to stay in the lead. Thingnes Bø did as expected and won the sprint race with Fourcade in second place. It was then made public that Fourcade was planning to retire after the pursuit race that followed, and suddenly the pursuit race wanted to set the stage for a final battle between the two rivals. Thingnes Bø secured his second overall World Cup title with fourth place in the pursuit, while Fourcade won the race and missed the overall World Cup by two points.[28]
