Kohler Co., founded in 1873 by John Michael Kohler, is an American manufacturing company based in Kohler, Wisconsin.[2] Kohler is best known for its plumbing products, but the company also makes furniture, cabinets, tiles, motors, and generators. In addition, Destination Kohler owns various food service operations in the United States and Scotland. In February 2017, Kohler Co. acquired the UK-based company Clarke Energy from the management team and ECI Partners,[3] a multinational specialist in the engineering, construction, installation and maintenance of engine-based power plants and is an authorized distributor of piston engines from GE engines in 19 countries worldwide .[4]
In 2018 Kohler became a sponsor of the English football club Manchester United. As the club’s sleeve sponsor, the Kohler logo features prominently on all Manchester United jerseys.[5]

Kohler Co. was founded in 1873 by Austrian immigrants John Michael Kohler and Charles Silberzahn with the purchase of the Sheboygan Union Iron and Steel Foundry from Kohler’s father-in-law Jacob Vollrath for $5,000.[6] Early products included cast iron and steel agricultural implements, castings for furniture factories, and decorative ironwork, including cemetery crosses and sofas. A breakthrough came in 1883 when John Michael applied enamel to a cast-iron horse trough to create the company’s first bathtub. Since then, the company has mainly been in the plumbing business and is known for its plumbing fixtures and faucets.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Kohler manufactured drinking fountains with a “bubble valve” from which the water shot vertically. Eventually, the entire fountain became known as the “Bubbler” in the area where Kohler products were sold. The term bubbler is still used in some areas of Wisconsin and some other areas of the United States.[8][9]
Kohler strikes took place in 1934 and 1954. A third strike took place in 1983 and lasted only a few weeks. On November 15, 2015, workers voted in favor of the Kohler 2015 strike, making it the fourth strike in the company’s history.

Former Wisconsin Gov. Walter J. Kohler Sr. was President of Kohler Co., and his son, Former Wisconsin Gov. Walter J. Kohler Jr., was a senior executive for many years. The Kohler presidency passed from Herbert Kohler Jr. (born February 20, 1939, grandson of the founder) to his son David Kohler on June 1, 2015.
In 1998, Kohler planned to repurchase all outstanding shares not owned by the family. All family members were required to exchange their common stock for unsellable restricted stock. Because Kohler is not a public company, the number of shares outstanding was minimal. [vague] Kohler offered $55,400 per share, but some shareholders challenged that valuation and sued. The IRS also challenged that valuation by pursuing the estate of Frederick Kohler, who recently died with 975 shares, but Kohler won the lawsuit.

In 1999, the United States Department of Labor filed a lawsuit alleging that Kohler Co.’s hiring practices were discriminatory against women.[11] The company had an informal height of 1.63 m (5 ft 4 in) for women, which is the average height of an adult woman in the United States.[12] Because of its contracts with the federal government, the company was barred from enforcing this requirement[13] and, as part of a settlement, agreed to hire and study 111 of the 2,000 women who had applied to Kohler from 1994-1995 “to remove unnecessary barriers to eliminate for women”.

In 2005, China Labor Watch accused Kohler China (Investment) Co., Ltd. a serious violation of workers’ rights at its Foshan factory. These included: excessive working hours, no overtime pay, low wages, unsafe working conditions, uncompensated industrial injuries and denial of the opportunity to form one’s own union.[14]
