Johnny Lloyd Patton Jr, 68, of Fort Worth, was found guilty Thursday of the October 2013 murder of Richard Slatkin.
Patton admitted to gunning down 66-year-old Slatkin, but claimed during his trial that the victim repeatedly threatened to kill him.

Police in Benbrook received a 911 call from Patton about a disturbance outside his girlfriend’s home around 3 p.m. on Oct. 1, 2013, Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
The 911 operator handling the call heard Patton say, “He’s going to shoot me,” according to a search warrant.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Richard Slatkin lying dead on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. Patton was unharmed.
“I had to pull the trigger,” an officer heard Patton say.
According to the affidavit, Slatkin, who worked as a private investigator, went to his ex-wife Catherine’s home to get a washer and dryer.
Police said Slatkin and two other people were loading the devices onto a truck when Patton pulled over and shot his romantic rival, who was unarmed.
Officers responding to the scene found two guns that belonged to Patton.
The 68-year-old man was charged with murder in December 2013 and was later released on reduced bail of $25,000.
