Jonathan “Jon” Amir Hatami (born December 15, 1969) is an American prosecutor serving as the Assistant District Attorney in the Complex Child Abuse Unit in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office [1].
Hatami was born in Manhattan, New York. In 1974, his family moved to Florida after his mother kidnapped Hatami and his brother over a custody dispute. In 1975 his family moved to North Hollywood, California, eventually settling in Santa Clarita, California. After graduating from high school in 1989, he joined the US Army, first enlisted in the Infantry (11B) and then transferred to the Military Police Corps (USA) (95B). He rose through the ranks from Private (rank) to Staff Sergeant before being discharged from the military.
After leaving the Army, he earned his associate’s degree with honors from Monterey Peninsula College, his Bachelor of Arts from California State University Northridge, where he graduated with honors, and his Juris Doctorate with honors from the University of Nebraska College of Law [2]. He worked for Judge Richard Sievers on the Nebraska Court of Appeals for a year and then moved back to California to start civil law. After becoming dissatisfied with the direction of his career, Hatami applied to the Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office and was hired by District Attorney Steve Cooley.
During his tenure as the Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office, Hatami handled thousands of child physical and sexual abuse cases and was responsible for prosecuting 77 court cases, including the torture and murder of 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez. His work on the Gabriel Fernandez case was featured in the Netflix documentary The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez[3].
Early Life and Education
Jonathan Hatami was born on December 15, 1969 in New York, New York. His father was originally from Iran and emigrated to the United States. His mother was born in Brooklyn, New York. Hatami is the eldest of five siblings. Growing up, Hatami suffered from severe child abuse at the hands of his father. Recalling that period of his life, he said, “I know how it feels to be powerless[4].” Hatami’s father would yell at him, curse at him, hit him, pull at his hair and bang him against walls bang in her apartment.
Eventually, his parents separated and fought for custody of their children. His mother was granted provisional custody. Fearing that Hatami’s father would flee back to Iran with the children, his mother kidnapped him and his brother and flew to Florida. She left her two children in the care of a stranger who continued to abuse them. After a month in Florida, Hatami’s mother returned and the family moved to California.
Meanwhile, Hatami’s father was searching for his missing children and contacted the NYPD, FBI, and other groups that help locate missing children. This resulted in Hatami and his brother being listed as missing children in an issue of Ladies’ Home Journal. In the early 1980s, someone recognized her, leading to a reunion with Hatami’s father[5].
Despite the abuse he endured growing up, Hatami graduated from Canyon High School (Santa Clarita)[6].

After graduating from high school in 1989, Hatami enlisted in the US Army as a private. He spent seven years in the army and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. While in the military, Hatami was stationed in South Korea, went to Panama during the 1991 Haitian refugee crisis, to the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, and to Los Angeles during the 1992 Los Angeles riots [7].

After graduating, Hatami worked for Judge Sievers at the Nebraska Court of Appeals[9] for a year. He then moved back to Los Angeles, California to practice as a civil attorney. During this time his law firm opened offices in New York, so he left California and went to New York to practice law for a year. He eventually moved back to California to continue his practice.

District Attorney Steve Cooley hired Hatami and he began working in East Los Angeles, then El Monte and then Van Nuys before receiving his permanent assignment in Antelope Valley [10]. As lead trial attorney at age 16 in the Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office, Hatami has tried 77 felony trials and 12 misdemeanor jury trials. During his tenure, he has also handled thousands of child physical and sexual abuse cases.
The murder of Gabriel Fernandez
On May 22, 2013, 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital and then flown to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles covered from head to toe with injuries[11][12][13]. Two days later, Gabriel was pronounced brain dead and taken off life support[14]. His mother, Pearl Fernandez, and her boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre, who lives there, were arrested and charged with torturing and murdering the 8-year-old[15].
In September 2017, the trials of Pearl Fernandez and Isauro Aguirre began. After four months, Isauro Aguirre was found guilty of first-degree murder under special circumstances of torture and sentenced to death[16]. To avoid the death penalty, Pearl Fernandez pleaded guilty to all charges and allegations and agreed to forego all of her appeal rights in exchange for life without the possibility of parole.
In April 2021, due to the election of current District Attorney George Gascon, Pearl Fernandez sought a re-sentencing under California Penal Code Section 1170.95, an amendment to the Penal Code created in September 2018 with the passage of SB 1437, which provided stricter parameters surrounding the use of felony murder . Her application was denied by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge George G. Lomeli in June of the same year[17].

In 2018, two weeks after Pearl Fernandez and Isauro Aguirre were sentenced, Hatami received a call from a nurse at Antelope Valley Hospital. The nurse told him that what happened to Gabriel happened to another little boy again. 10-year-old Anthony Avalos was found dead at the home of his mother, Heather Barron, and her local boyfriend, Kareem Leiva [18][19]. Both Barron and Leiva were eventually arrested and charged with torturing and murdering the 10-year-old[20]. Reflecting on how he felt upon receiving the news, Hatami said, “…it was just very disappointing, draining, sad…[21]”
Anthony’s trial is scheduled to begin in fall 2022. Although initially a death penalty case, the death penalty was taken off the table under orders from current District Attorney George Gascón [22][23].
