Keep up with the best from America’s Best Racing!

The Richest Jockeys in the World

Horse racing jockeys compete for staggering amounts of money, and while a large portion of their profits go to the owners of the horses, many of them have still amassed some pretty incredible sums over the years.

Even more surprisingly, with no UK name making the top 50, many of the sport’s top earners aren’t even that well known outside of their own countries.

Jockeys with the Highest Winnings in 2020 in North America

Each year between 1200 and 1500 licensed jockeys compete at racetracks across the United States. This is a tough and unforgiving career, especially in a year marked by a drastic drop in race days. At the lowest tier, you can earn less than $20,000 a year if you race regularly.

Jockeys who are not allowed to ride winning horses take home only the riding fees, which can range from $30 to $100. But once you finish in the top three, the equation changes drastically – now we’re talking a cut in prize money.

This is typically 10% of the owner’s share, which is 6% of the total money (winning owners receive 60% of the prize money in most races). For second or third place jockeys the reduction is 5% of the ownership interest.

Very successful top jockeys can easily make over a million dollars a year. Don’t get confused when you see tens of millions of dollars in a jockey’s annual profit – that’s the amount his/her horses have won – the jockeys typically take about 10%.

With that in mind, let’s take a quick look at the top 5 most successful jockeys in North American Thoroughbred horse racing in 2020 and take a look at the big races where they’ve made a lot of that money:

5. Tyler Gaffalione – $14.98 million

At 26, he is one of the rising stars of US racing. Son of former jockey Steve Gaffalione, Tyler has had a stellar start to his career since 2015. In five of his first six years of racing he has over 200 wins each. Like many top jockeys, he typically works the New York and Florida tracks.

Gaffalione’s best career achievement to date came in 2019 when he won the Preakness Stakes with War of Will. In 2020 he had a spate of Gr. 1 Wins in the Alabama Stakes, American Oaks, Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes and the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational.

He also placed second in the 2020 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile race on Hot Rod Charlie. Tyler Gaffalione’s career earnings to date exceed $66 million with more than 1,400 wins from over 8,000 starts. His win rate is close to 20%. In 2019 his Merit Rank was 10 – he’s up 5 spots this year.

4. John R. Velazquez – $15.09 million

At 49, he is one of the older jockeys on this list. A Puerto Rican native, Velazquez burst onto the New York racing scene in 1990. His best years in terms of earnings were in the mid-2000s when he became the US Jockey Champion in 2004 and 2005.

Velazquez has a list of impressive wins at the top of the sport including 5 Triple Crown races, 15 Breeders’ Cup races and other big events like the Kentucky Oaks and Dubai World Cup. He had a memorable 2020 with 5 Gr.1 wins including the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic with Authentic.

Another Breeders’ Cup race he finished first in 2020 was the Filly and Mare Sprint on Gamine. Velazquez had just 644 starts, the lowest among the jockeys on this list. Yet here he is on the top 5 list, up from his 6th place finish in 2019. He has a whopping $430 million in earnings over his 30-year career.

3. Luis Saez – $15.79 million

The 28-year-old Panamanian began racing in the United States in 2009 at the recently closed Calder track. Saez has already amassed 14,700 starts with over 2500 wins in an 11-year racing career. In 2014, at the age of 17, he lost his younger brother, apprentice jockey Juan Saez, in a tragic racing accident.

He has had several notable achievements in Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup races over the years, finishing second in Preakness in 2018, in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and in Filly and Mare Sprint races (both 2013). In 2020 he won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Essential Quality and finished second in several other Breeders’ Cup races such as the Distaff, Sprint, Dirt Mile and Filly and Mare Sprint.

In 2019, Saez ranked 7th on the US Jockeys Annual Winning Charts. Despite the racing calendar affected by COVID, he improved it by 4 places in 2020. To date, he has won $129 million with an average win rate of 17%. Saez is a regular on the New York racing scene and has another younger brother who is a professional jockey.

2. Joel Rosario – $17.85 million

Rosario is a 35-year-old professional jockey who was born in the Dominican Republic. He arrived in California in 2006 and quickly made a name for himself in West Coast racing circles. In 2012, he transitioned into the New York and Florida racing scenes.

2013 was a big year for Rosario – he won the Dubai World Cup and the Kentucky Derby that year and won his first ever Triple Crown race with Malibu Moon. He has won the Belmont Stakes twice (2019 and 2014) and at least 13 Breeders’ Cup races. Two of those thirteen wins came in 2020 – the Juvenile Fillies on Vequist and the Dirt Mile on Knicks Go.

Rosario has more than 16,400 career starts to date with over 3000 wins at an 18% win rate. His career earnings exceed $230 million. Ranked 4th on the income table in 2019, he has improved slightly this year. His best year was 2013 when he finished second.

1. Irad Ortiz Jr. – $20.32 million

Ortiz has been breaking US jockey records in recent years – he has now topped the winnings and earnings charts for three straight years. In 2019, the Puerto Rico native set the record for annual earnings of $34 million. The 28-year-old jockey has been a racing pro since 2012.

His major wins include Belmont Stakes in 2016 on Creator and 11 Breeders’ Cup races from 2014. In 2019 alone he had 4 Breeders’ Cup wins. Ortiz has continued that winning form in 2020, finishing first in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and Juvenile Turf Sprint events. Other Gr.1 wins this year include the Whitney Stakes, Hollywood Derby and Just a Game Stakes.

Ortiz has competed in 14,000 races in his career and has finished first in over 2600 events with a 19% win rate. His total career earnings are $198 million. At the moment he is the undisputed jockey champion in the United States
