Rosendo published his first travel story in the Los Angeles Times in 1980 and has since appeared in national and regional publications. He has also authored a selection of books and served as consulting editor on others including Where To Go When and Where To Go When – The Americas for D.K. Eyewitness Travel Guides, a travel guide to Los Angeles during the 1984 Olympics and a book of short stories entitled MUSINGS – The Short Happy Pursuit of Pleasure and other Journeys.
Rosendo also hosted Travelscope – a national travel radio show that produced more than a thousand original hour-long programs – from 1985 to 2009. In addition to his radio show, he has produced radio features for ABC News, Discovery Channel Radio, and the Associated Press, among others.
Rosendo, presented at the New York Times Travel Show, LifeWorks Erie Expo in Erie, Pennsylvania, and the Books That Build Bridges benefit in Kansas City, Missouri, where he spoke about travel as a life-changing experience.

Q. What are your favorite destinations for travel to Florida?
A. Well, everyone loves the beaches, but I love the Everglades, fishing, and the many outdoor activities that Florida is famous for. My father was born in Key West and we used to travel there every summer when I was a kid. I’ve since returned for longer stays and it’s still a happy, fun-loving place. I also love the Tampa area, especially Ybor City, because when my grandfather came to the United States around the turn of the century, he settled there and worked for the Have-A-Tampa cigar factory. If you’re familiar with Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscopes, you know I love cultural travel, so I go anywhere I can find concentrations of it, and there’s a lot of it to explore in Florida.
Q. What are your favorite places in Miami?
A. When I was little, our father would take the four of us to South Beach every summer morning. Of course it wasn’t like it is now, but for us it was just perfect. When I’m in town, I still go down early in the morning, walk the beach, swim, and reminisce about the “good old days.” Being of Cuban descent, I also like going to Calle Ocho. I walk the streets eating Cuban food, buying handcrafted Cuban cigars (like my grandfather used to roll), drinking a café con leche and listening to Cuban banter at the speed of light.
Q. Have you traveled in the last two years? What was it like traveling during COVID?
A. Yes, despite the COVID restrictions limiting my ability to travel, I have discovered a few countries that have allowed me entry. I have traveled to Costa Rica on a Travelscope scouting trip and to France for a scouting and personal trip. Finally, in September 2021, I was able to film an episode of Season 12 of Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope on South Padre Island, Texas, and it wasn’t until March that I went to Ireland to film another episode, featuring Ireland’s patron saint, St. Patrick is celebrated. So while there were obstacles to overcome and extra precautions to be taken, the thrill and rewards of travel are always worth the effort, in my opinion.

A. Who has a crystal ball? I will say there will be many more outdoor dining and many more outdoor events. Travel that emphasizes nature – hiking, glamping (luxury camping), visits to national parks and natural areas – will increase. It also depends on how many new COVID variants emerge and whether they start to significantly affect the health of the entire population. I think as long as vaccines keep up with variants, people will travel. It’s in our DNA.

Q. With rising fuel prices, staff shortages and inflation, do you worry that travel will become too expensive for the average person?
A. Some destinations and travel experiences can get expensive, but there are wonderful options to suit every budget. The idea is to be flexible, creative and find joy in simple things. For example, an inexpensive picnic of local meats, fruit, cheese and bread bought at a French farmer’s market and eaten along a beautiful flowing river such as the Dordogne or Lot with family, friends or lovers is as extravagantly a wonderful experience as a meal in a 5 star Michelin restaurant – maybe even better. Travel is about the people you meet and share your journey with.
Q. Where have you never been that you would like to visit in the years to come?
A. There are so many places. I haven’t experienced most of Africa and South America and I’ve never been to Antarctica. All places I would love to visit, but if I had to pick one spontaneously, I’ve never been to New Zealand and it’s definitely on my bucket list. I’ve featured guests from New Zealand on my radio show that I’ve been doing for 23 years and they really won me over. There are so many dramatic natural places to visit; to have so many different experiences. The Kiwis are a friendly people and the indigenous Māori culture is very much alive and thriving.
Q. What will you be talking about at Pompano Beach?
A. I will share how I became a travel journalist and some of the amazing and life changing travel experiences I have had. I will be using slides and video clips from my PBS and CreateTV television shows to illustrate my theme. The presentation will be part travel destination articles, part travel tips and ideas, and part memoirs – like my new book Musings – The Short Happy Pursuit of Pleasure and Other Journeys – which I will also be presenting. I will also have the great pleasure of meeting some of my Florida viewers at the show and will try to answer their questions.
