Regional Mexican artist Julión Álvarez announced Monday (June 20) that his music is officially back on Spotify, five years after authorities banned him from benefiting from his music in the United States.
During an Instagram Live, Álvarez gave his fans an update on his music – old and new – and his situation with US authorities. “After I was delisted by the authorities in May, it was all a process involving not only us but also the label (Universal Music Group/Fonovisa). We still have a deal with them, so they had to legally upload my music.”

In 2017, Álvarez – frontman of Julión Álvarez Y Su Norteño Banda – was linked by the US Treasury Department to Mexican drug lord Raul Flores Hernandez and the Flores Drug Trafficking Organization, which authorities say “all assets of the individuals and designated legal entities involved.” under US jurisdiction or under the control of US persons are frozen and US persons are generally prohibited from transacting with them.”
Álvarez has since categorically denied any links and was removed from the Office of the Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) list of Specially Designated Nationals on May 27.
In his social media post, the Chiapas-born artist also explained that there were multiple accounts that attempted to “illegally” upload his music to digital streaming platforms, but that these were eventually removed. Spotify was the first DSP to allow fans to stream Álvarez’s albums again, including his 2017 set Ni Diablo Ni Santo, which peaked at #9 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart.
“We’re slowly working with other platforms to bring my music to the others,” the singer said. “Things continue to be favourable. It’s another win and in a way I’m getting the tools back to keep working. God willing, we’ll be able to release new music in a few days.”
During a press conference in Mexico when it was announced that he was being delisted, Álavrez explained why he was even associated with the drug trafficking organization. I had no idea these people [whom I did business with] were being pursued by the government which is why they put me in touch with them,” said Álvarez, who produced the letter clearing him of all charges. “I learned many things during this process. Personally, I’m more patient and calmer now. Since this situation there has been a before and after. Now I have the strength and knowledge to manage my finances. I’ve been through a lot of investigations and discrimination, but now I can walk out with my head held high and say we’re victorious.”
Álvarez had not toured the United States since his official appointment – which was at the height of his career as one of the top-selling acts in the regional Mexican genre.
