Comedian Justine Stafford on being diagnosed with EUPD

Comedian, author and digital content creator Justine Stafford spoke to Ryan Tubridy on RTÉ Radio 1 about her diagnosis of Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder. Listen again above.

“I went from 12 stone to six and a half,” Justine told Ryan, describing the beginning of her mental health struggles. At just 12 years old, she became anorexic* and adopted a calorie-restricted diet and an exercise regimen that included nightly runs and ice-cold baths.

Justine had hoped that her extreme weight loss would help her come to terms with some of the students who bullied her about their weight in her first year of secondary school. Of course, her beliefs were misguided and she became incredibly ill from the disturbance.

“It was still the same. I was invisible, no one really noticed me and all the work I put in felt like it was for nothing,” she explained. “Everything stopped. I think it was everyone’s shock at how drastic things had gotten, they were afraid to speak out at that point.”

Though she tried to keep her eating disorder a secret, Justine’s extreme weight loss was apparent to her family, who begged her to get help. She was eventually admitted to St. Patrick’s Mental Health Service for treatment, per her parents’ orders.

“The general rule of thumb would be to investigate the reasons I stopped eating in the first place, but because my weight had gotten so low they had to step in and force me to eat first.”

“I still didn’t want to get better,” she continued. “I still thought I was overweight and felt like everyone was against me and forcing me to gain weight.”

In the end, it was the content creator’s love of making films and a deep-seated desire to make others happy that drove her to eat. However, the real problems were yet to be uncovered and her anorexia nervosa soon turned into bulimia.

“I could see people were happy that I was gaining weight, that then encouraged me to eat more because I was making people happy and at the end of the day I just wanted to be liked and fit in. I knew that if I kept eating, people would be happy and bulimia would develop because I wasn’t comfortable eating so much,” she explained.

Eventually, the teen opened up about her “very mysterious illness” to her family, but continued to struggle with her eating disorders, particularly during stressful times in her life like leaving cert.

Nevertheless, the now 25-year-old studied film and radio at THD and shortly thereafter landed an internship at a radio station, followed by a job at Joe.ie. Admittedly, it was a surprising career choice given how stressful and unpredictable being a freelancer can be, but According to Justine, her job is extremely rewarding.

“It created content and made people happy, laughed, entertained — that’s when I’m at my happiest,” she told Ryan.

Unfortunately, although she sought and received support from counselors at various stages, the Meath woman was dealing with other mental health issues and, faced with multiple stressors, attempted suicide last year**.

“I thought there was no way I could come back, I didn’t want to try anymore. I’ve had this disease longer than before and it was very difficult,” she said.

Justine was rushed to the hospital where she received further treatment and was eventually diagnosed with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder, also known as Borderline Personality Disorder, prompting the young woman with an immediate sense of relief.

“This condition described everything I had been going through: intense anxiety, very unstable emotions, difficulty building relationships, lots of suicidal thoughts, and self-destructive behavior. When I heard all these things, it made sense to me. It was a relief, if anything.”

Last year I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder/Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder.

Before I was diagnosed I had never heard of the disease or what it meant and I wish I had.

“I’ve relapsed myself. I’ve had bad bouts with bulimia and it’s always discouraged me, but I’m trying not to get caught and just keep going. I still struggle with maintaining stability in my life, be it in my relationship with food, work and relationships.

“But managing the disease is possible and seeking help is really the most important step in finding the right treatment that works for you and can help you take control of EUPD and move forward with the rest of your life.” focus,” she wrote.
