Iranian-American Comedian K-von Jokes About His Roots

By Tara Biglari

The world’s a playground for jokes and laughs, at least for comedian K-von. Kevan Moezzi (his real name) draws inspiration from his Iranian roots for comedy routines that have earned him international acclaim.

K-von was born to an American mother and Iranian father in Reno, Nevada and grew up in Las Vegas. He had an all-American childhood: he celebrated the Fourth of July, ate Kentucky Fried Chicken like his peers. But as he got older, K-Von was encouraged to talk about what makes him different from everyone else. The key was his heritage.

After working odd jobs, including selling massage chairs at a Las Vegas mall, K-von moved to Los Angeles at age 23 to pursue a career in comedy.

His style is light-hearted and he often takes his Iranian identity as a source of humor and pokes fun at himself for barely speaking Persian.

K-von’s career has picked up speed in recent years. He did a Ted Talk where his jokes about the Persian New Year garnered thousands of hits across the internet, and he starred in Maz Jobrani’s 2016 film Jimmy Vestvood: Amerikan Hero, in addition to his live, online, and television projects.

Kayhan Life caught up with K-von to chat about his comedic journey, where it has taken him and what he plans for the future.

How did you first get involved with comedy?

When I was a little kid, I used to read a lot of comedy magazines and funny books because my mom wouldn’t let me watch TV. As I got older I started discovering TV shows like Saturday Night Live and I said, ‘I want to do this someday when I grow up.’ Now, looking back, I’m doing exactly what I set out to do when I was little kid do.

How long have you been doing this full-time?

Money comes and goes in comedy. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, but when you start they pay you in chicken wings or they offer you free french fries to get you to the gig. It’s hard to pay bills with chicken wings and luckily I had a very nice job. But as I built my comedy act, I had to decide when to give up the easy paycheck and go all out with comedy. It lasted about four years. I haven’t had a regular job since then so in many ways I retired at the age of 29 but at the same time I work long hours to make sure I don’t have a real job!

What do you like about comedy and how did you get into it?

Comedy is a way to unleash every aspect of your creativity. A lot of people see us on stage and think, “This guy comes on stage and tells jokes.” What they don’t see is [what] is happening behind the scenes — writing, filming, editing, producing videos, content, fun articles and books – so when you show up you have an arsenal of fun stuff to draw from.

To better answer the question, I like comedy because it’s like a Rubik’s Cube. If you’re a very creative person, you’ll never quite master comedy, but you’re getting closer and closer to it and looking perfect. . . It’s always under construction.

How is the turnout at your shows and is the audience mostly Iranian?

I’m lucky in a way because I have several different shows. I have my Persian show which has garnered a strong audience and garnered me many fans online – it also appeals to non-Iranian viewers from the Middle East and Asia who find similarities in our life experiences.

Then I have my college show that goes all over America for students from all over the country, and it’s very different. Some people see me there and they say, “Hey, you didn’t make any Middle Eastern jokes!” and I say, “Well, this is Nebraska, there are no Middle Eastern people. . . ” Of course, there would be no point in discussing the intricacies of cooking Zereshk Polov. But sometimes an Iranian or two will stumble in and be like, “Hey, what are you doing in Iowa?!” which is very cool. Overall, the best shows are when there’s a diverse mix of people because that’s when I can pull jokes out of my entire tool belt.

How do you find YouTube/Facebook as a medium these days?

When I started comedy, my idea was not to reveal too many jokes online. In this way, people could be surprised personally. But as the competition grew, people started asking me if I still did comedy, which was really painful. So I changed my mind and decided to give away a free comedy clip every week for a year and see how that works. The number of people following me online has quadrupled, people from all over the world have started tagging and sharing each other and it’s awesome.

I also now make short clips of unprepared things that happened during the week. I’ll give you an example. At a show I asked a viewer what he does for a living. He looked at me and just said “Persian”. So I ran around with it for a few minutes and said, “I asked what you do for a living, unless Persian is a job now.” Holding up my camera and telling this story, I got 25,000 views in a week, which I thought was a cool way to get 25,000 people who weren’t at the show laughing, involving them and making them feel like a part of it.

How was working with Maz Jobrani?

Maz is such a great example and entertainer for the community. Everything about him is just friendly and upbeat, he really is an ambassador of culture and comedy. I was fortunate that he chose me to open for him on 75 stops on his comedy tour when he was just beginning to become world famous. Those were some of the best three years because it showed me how to handle the lifestyle. There’s two options: smoking cigarettes and getting drunk every night and barely making it to show comedian, and then there’s the long-term, stable comedian and that’s the kind of comedian Maz. That’s how he was able to stay relevant for over a decade and still be healthy and happy. It’s great to watch him because you learn to take care of yourself on and off stage.

Have you ever been really nervous or have you messed up on stage?

The first time you’re on stage it’s nervous, the first big show in a comedy club is a little bit nervous, but then you get the hang of it, and then when you’re on TV for the first time, you are you a bit nervous, so everything is the first time. The more often you do it, the more comfortable you’ll feel. Only bigger, newer opportunities get me really nervous, everything else is like “this is my job, let’s do this”. It would be like a heart surgeon getting nervous about heart surgery – even if you and I were nervous, it’s their job.

If you’re stupid on stage, at least you can joke about it and make fun of what you’re making fun of. Doing comedy means insulting people – it’s very interesting because we don’t run for office, we don’t influence public order, my thoughts aren’t going to change laws, so it makes me angry when people are really offended by a joke. Once in the crowd, someone was sitting on a laptop about 12 meters away from me. So I made a comment on that and said, “Sir, what are you typing back there?” and the person says “I’m a girl” and I say “oh . . . it’s hard to tell from here, the lights in my eyes’ and she said, ‘it’s pretty easy to tell!’ She closed her laptop and stormed off. . . it was super awkward. How do you get out?!

Do you have any shows or cameos planned for the future?

I have a new hour-long special coming out this Christmas. You can’t joke a lot about the Middle East, so my special will cover elections, the Olympics, dating and broader topics. I don’t want people to say, “If you’re Persian you’ll like this guy, but otherwise you won’t find him funny,” so it has tidbits that are funny for all kinds of people. Then I plan my tour that goes all over North America and try to jump across the pond with Sweden, London and Australia. I’m sticking to my plan of putting a new video online once a week and then just keep taking it!
