Comedy actress and author Kathryn Feeney, FCLC ’10 has big reason to celebrate. Feeney plays bartender Katie on new Netflix sitcom Mr. Iglesias, which premiered in June and was recently renewed for a second season.
The show stars comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias and follows a high school history teacher on a mission to nurture gifted but underprivileged students. According to Feeney, a similarly good-natured spirit exists off-camera.
“Kevin Hench, who created [the show], and Gabriel Iglesias have a motto that’s actually on the show: ‘Work hard and be nice,'” Feeney recalled. “Every time I have been there I have felt at home, so welcome. Everyone was really nice.”
One of Feeney’s best friends, fellow actress Maggie Geha, was cast to play the series’ cheeky history teacher Abby Spencer. Shortly thereafter, Feeney encountered the “Mr. Iglesias” creator at a studio lot where she was working on another project. They began discussing Geha’s casting, and from there, “things just started to fall out for Feeney.” She sent along her role and soon landed the part.
“It was one of those things in this business where you say, ‘Luck is when opportunity meets preparation,'” Feeney said. “It felt a lot like that. It wasn’t the traditional way of getting a part…but if I hadn’t worked all these years and put together a strong comedy role, I probably wouldn’t have gotten it, even with this crazy encounter.”
She also stars in the film adaptation of Where Are You Going, Bernadette?, which just hit theaters on August 16th. Feeney only appears in one scene as a pharmacy clerk, but that scene gave her an “exciting opportunity to work closely with the film’s star, Cate Blanchett.
“It took 13 hours to shoot that one scene,” Feeney said. “I was scared, but only because I let myself be like that. She was absolutely lovely and really cool to watch her work… I’ve never worked with anyone at this level before.”
Feeney’s own career in Los Angeles began shortly after graduating from Fordham. She has lived and worked there for seven years now, but the New York native says “100,000%” plans to retire in the near future.
“It’s much more spacious here; It’s hard to connect with people,” Feeney said of LA. “I’m considering [moving back to New York] as we speak. I’m engaged and my fiance is from Pittsburgh. He’s also an actor, and we’ve both always, always known that someday we’ll go East again.”
Before settling on the West Coast, Feeney was a child actress in New York from the age of 10, appearing in a nationwide tour of Ragtime, among other productions. However, she was not a theater major at Fordham; Her early exposure to professional theater led to her becoming disillusioned at a young age.
“By the time I was 12, I felt unemployed. All those horrible things that make life difficult when you’re an adult pursuing a career in art, I experienced that when I was a kid,” she said.
That feeling led her to pursue different paths in college – she majored in Political Science and Communications with a concentration in Journalism and devoted much of her time to The Observer. The unexpected loss of one of her colleagues in a car accident caused her to reconsider her passion.
“Casey [Feldman] was the news editor when I was the assistant news editor,” Feeney said. “When Casey passed, many of us went through a lot of emotions. It kind of spurred me to decide to go back to acting and pursue my career in show business because I thought, ‘Well, I might as well pursue my dreams while I’m still here.'”
That’s not to say she’s given up her other interests entirely. Feeney has put her plans to attend law school for her acting career on hold, but recently began attending law school part-time while working on acting projects.
“It’s always interested me,” she says. “I don’t know what I want to do with it. I have no plans to become a full-time lawyer…but I thought this opportunity would come and I’m taking it day by day and seeing where it takes me.”
Perhaps in the second season of “Mr. Iglesias.” Whatever project she takes on, on whatever coast, she’s sure to keep busy.
