Kayla Mak Went From Her Home Studio to NBC’s World of Dance

If she’s not already on your radar, rising contemporary ballet dancer Kayla Mak should be. The 16-year-old has been training at Westchester Dance Academy in Westchester, New York, under the tutelage of Kelly Burke (dance teacher, October 2015) since he was 3 years old. Recently, Mak blew audiences away on Season 3 of NBC’s World of Dance. “The presence on this show is so great,” she says. “I’m so excited to push the door a little wider into contemporary ballet and television.”

On her way to WOD “I’ve seen the show since the first season. Some of my friends were there and I thought it would be a great opportunity for them. I wish I could too. Then my studio owner got a call that they wanted some of their dancers to audition for season 2, so I decided to give it a try. I went to New Orleans to try it, but I didn’t make it. I was disappointed but I went home and had another year of training and growth. I had to mature in my movement before I received an email from the producers asking me to audition for this season. I was so honored and felt so ready to finally be on the show. I believe everything happens for a reason.”

On the lessons WOD taught her: “What I learned from the show was that confidence is key. I’ve learned to believe in myself and to get out of my head. As a classically trained dancer, I can be very hard on myself. I don’t give myself enough credit and even break myself down, but on the show I’ve learned that I need to believe in myself more. I’ve learned to rely on the process and go with the flow. I also learned about musicality and how it moves me as a dancer. In competitions I tend to get corrections on how to connect to the music and how it should move the audience. That was an important criticism that I got on the show as well. The judges gave me corrections that gave me clarity on how to better apply that feedback.”

About the Home Studio Training “My teacher, Kelly Burke, received excellent training from the School of American Ballet. She was also educated at a contemporary school, so has experience in both fields. She brings both techniques into her school so that we dancers become well-rounded. I dance about 24 hours a week depending on whether or not I have competitions or extra rehearsals. I take about three or four ballet lessons a week, plus tip lessons, jumping and turning lessons, jazz lessons and rehearsals. I don’t dance on Tuesdays or Sundays unless I have competitions to give me a day or two to recover. I stick with my studio because I know they have my best interest at heart. They opened doors for me and I am so grateful for that.”

Why You Should Know Kayla Mak

Backstage, 9-year-old Kayla Mak is like any other fourth-grader. She is a happy child who likes math and watches TV. (Her favorite show is, of course, So You Think You Can Dance.) But bring her on stage and you’ll see a very different Kayla — a girl who’s anything but ordinary.

At the New York City Dance Alliance Foundation’s fall show, Bright Lights Shining Stars, in NYC, Kayla performed in a large group with her studio, Westchester Dance Academy. Although the older dancers began the ballet routine, it wasn’t until Kayla bourreted from the wings that the crowd went wild. Kayla was the smallest dancer out there, but it wasn’t just her height and oversized smile that drew attention — she wowed audiences because she could more than keep up with girls twice her age. Kayla mastered her pirouettes with ease and showed huge jumps, crazy flexibility and breathtaking penchées.

Kayla has been training at the WDA in Mount Kisco, NY since she started dancing at the age of 4. “My mom was a dancer and she said, ‘You’re dancing all over the house, let’s get you into a studio,'” Kayla says. Soon she was enrolled in her first ballet class. “I love using ballet to express my feelings,” she says. Kayla also studies poetry and jazz and started competing when she was 5 years old. In addition to her solos, her contemporary ballet solo “Arabian Waltz” earned her the title of National Mini Female Outstanding Dancer at NYCDA and Young Dancer of the Year at American Dance Awards last summer – Kayla performs in group routines that she says ” Fun because I get picked up a lot, but it’s a bit scary dancing with the older girls.” When she’s intimidated, it doesn’t show: Kayla performs with the utmost confidence. This year, her training will extend beyond the WDA as she tours, assists and teaches with NYCDA.

What’s next for Kayla? “I want to be a professional dancer,” she says. “Any type of dancer.” A simple answer from an extraordinary young girl.
