Ken Osmond

American actor and police officer

Kenneth Charles Osmond (June 7, 1943 – May 18, 2020) was an American actor and police officer. Osmond began his career as a child actor at the age of four, playing the role of Eddie Haskell in the television situation comedy Leave It to Beaver from the late 1950s to early 1960s and reprising it in the American revival series The New Leave It to Beaver 1980s . Typed by the role, he found it difficult to get other acting jobs and became a Los Angeles police officer. After retiring from police work, he resumed his acting career.

Early life[edit]

Osmond was born in Glendale, California to Pearl (Hand) and Thurman Osmond.[1][2][3] His father was a carpenter and prop maker, and his mother, whom he described as “a typical movie mom,” had ambitions to get him and his brother Dayton into acting.[2][4] Osmond began auditioning professionally at the age of four and began working in commercials. His mother took her sons to acting classes every day after school; eventually he studied dance, acting, diction, dialects, martial arts and horseback riding.[2]

Career [edit]

Early years[edit]

Osmond began working in feature films as an extra. The first thing he remembered was appearing in the film Plymouth Adventure with Spencer Tracy and Gene Tierney.[2] He had his first speaking role at age 9, a small part in the film So Big with Jane Wyman and Sterling Hayden.[2]

He has continued to appear in small roles in feature films such as Good Morning Miss Dove and Everything But the Truth and has had numerous guest appearances on television series including Lassie, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Wagon Train, Fury, Circus Boy and The Loretta Young Show.[ 2][4] He also appeared on the series Official Detective in 1958 as Henry in the episode “The Deserted House”.

In 1959, Osmond played 16-year-old “Tommy” in the episode “Dead Aim” of the ABC/Warner Brothers western series Colt .45, starring Wayde Preston. John Doucette was cast as bounty hunter Lou Gore and Bing Russell portrayed Jed Coy in the episode.

Osmond made a guest appearance on Petticoat Junction in 1964. He was seen as Harold Boggs in the episode “The Genghis Keane Story”.[5]

Leave it to Beaver[edit]

In the fall of 1957, 14-year-old Osmond was called to a typical “Cattle Call” audition to read for the role for which he excelled most, that of Wally Cleaver’s best (and worst) friend, Eddie Haskell’s family Sitcom Leave it to Beaver.[2][4] After a series of recalls to narrow the field, Osmond finally landed the role.[2] The character of Eddie was originally intended to be a “one-shot” cameo, but those involved in the show were impressed with Osmond’s portrayal, and Eddie Haskell eventually became a memorable character on the show throughout its six seasons ][4] him appeared in 97 of the show’s 235 episodes.

Osmond’s portrayal of Eddie Haskell became a cultural reference and archetype for the behind-your-back rebel. Teenage Eddie Haskell was polite and subservient to adults, but ridiculed adult social conventions behind their backs. He constantly tried to involve his friends in activities that would get them into trouble. Parents like Ward and June Cleaver hoped that Eddie would not be a role model for their children, but someone they would point to as an example of what not to do. It is still known today that the term “Eddie Haskell” denotes an insincere flatterer or sycophant.[6]

During the show’s final years, Osmond served as an armorer in the US Army Reserves and was granted permission to film episodes in exchange for personal appearances for the Army’s Special Services.

Typecast[ edit ]

After Leave It to Beaver ended in 1963, Osmond continued to make occasional appearances on television series such as CBS’ Petticoat Junction, The Munsters, and a final returning appearance on Lassie in the episode “A Matter of Seconds” (1967) as the motorcycle delivery man who died hitchhiking collie in his sidecar. He was cast in the feature films C’mon Let’s Live a Little (1967) and With Six You Get Eggroll (1968). However, he was typecast as Eddie Haskell and had trouble finding steady work. In 2008, Osmond told radio host Stu Shostak in a radio interview, “I was very heavily typecast. It’s a death sentence. In Hollywood you get typecast. I’m not complaining because Eddie was too good to me but I found the work hard. In 1968 I bought my first house, in 1969 I got married and we were planning a family and I needed a job so I went out and registered with the LAPD on.”[2]

law enforcement[edit]

In 1970 Osmond joined the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and grew a mustache in order to remain relatively anonymous among the average citizen, if not among his associates. He worked as a motorcycle officer.[10][11]

On September 20, 1980, Osmond was hit by three bullets in a chase with a suspected car thief. He was protected from two of the bullets by his bulletproof vest, with the third bullet ricocheting off his belt buckle.[4][12][13][14] The shooting was later dramatized in a November 1992 episode of the CBS series Top Cops.[15] Osmond applied for a disability pension in 1984, but after a hearing of evidence in 1986, the Los Angeles Board of Pension Commissioners denied his application by a vote of 4 to 2. Osmond appealed to the Superior Court and in 1988 a judge overturned the board’s rejection and awarded Osmond a life pension and he retired from the force.

Urban legends[edit]

By the early 1970s, it was widely reported that Osmond had become rock star Alice Cooper.[6] According to Cooper, the rumor began when a college newspaper editor asked him what kind of kid he was, to which Cooper replied, “I was obnoxious, gross, a real Eddie Haskell.” However, the story ended with Cooper being the real one Eddie Haskell was.[6] Cooper later told the New Times, “It was the biggest rumor ever spread about me. Eventually I got a t-shirt that said ‘No, I’m not Eddie Haskell’. But people still believed it.”[6]

Another common urban legend of the 1970s was that Osmond had grown into adult movie star John Holmes. The story apparently began when fan magazines falsely reported that Osmond had started such a career.[21] The rumor was dispelled when a Los Angeles movie theater lit up its marquee advertisement, “Eddie Haskell of TV in ‘Behind the Green Door’ – X-rated,” prompting Osmond himself, then an LAPD officer, to head to the movies to to request this the manager removes his character’s name from the marquee.[21] Osmond testified at his 1986 disability hearing that in 1971 he was called to the LAPD’s Department of Internal Affairs and asked to strip to prove he was not John Holmes.[16]

In the early 1980s, Osmond sued a Los Angeles adult bookstore called “Le Sex Shoppe” for selling an erotic video starring Holmes. The video advertised that the film featured “‘Little Eddie Haskell’ from ‘Leave it to Beaver'”. Osmond claimed that the film’s publicity defamed him, but the court dismissed the case and Osmond appealed to the California Circuit Court of Appeals, which also ruled against him that there was no evidence the bookstore owner used the defamatory language on the packaging knew and therefore did not act “intentionally” in selling the video.[22]

Back to acting[ edit ]

In 1983, Osmond appeared alongside Beaver co-stars Jerry Mathers, Richard Deacon and Jeri Weil as a game show contestant and celebrity guest star on the Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour. Osmond returned to acting in 1983, reprising his role as Eddie Haskell in the CBS television movie Still the Beaver, which followed the grown Cleaver boys, their friends, and their families. The TV movie was a success and led to the revival comedy series The New Leave It to Beaver, which premiered the following year. The show ran for four seasons from 1984 to 1989, beginning on Disney Channel and later moving to WTBS. On the show, Osmond played Eddie Haskell as a husband and father, while his character’s two sons, Freddie Haskell and Edward “Bomber” Haskell Jr., were played by Osmond’s two real-life sons, Eric Osmond and Christian Osmond. [26]

In 1987, Osmond received the Former Child Star “Lifetime Achievement” Award from the Young Artist Foundation for his role as Eddie Haskell.[28] In the 1980s and 1990s he continued to appear in television on the shows Happy Days and Rags to Riches and in the television movie High School U.S.A., as well as in his role as Eddie Haskell on television shows such as Parker Lewis Can’t Lose and Hello Honey, I’m Closed home!. In the 1997 feature film Leave It to Beaver, Osmond played Eddie Haskell, Sr. and Adam Zolotin played his son Eddie Haskell, Jr.[2] He also had a small role in the 2016 indie film Characterz.[30]

Personal life[edit]

In 1969, Osmond married Sandra Purdy.[2][31] They had two sons, Eric E. Osmond and Christian S. Osmond.[2][4][26] After retiring from the police force, Osmond handled rental properties in Los Angeles County and made occasional personal appearances at film festivals, collectors’ shows, and nostalgia conventions.

On September 18, 2007, Osmond filed a class action lawsuit against the Screen Actors Guild, alleging that the SAG collected $8 million in foreign arrears for US actors but did not distribute it to the actors.

In August 2011, Osmond emerged as the celebrity spokesperson for St. Joseph Aspirin.[35]

Osmond co-authored the book Eddie: The Life and Times of America’s Preeminent Bad Boy with Christopher J. Lynch, which was published in September 2014. The foreword was written by Jerry Mathers.[36]

death [edit]

Osmond died on May 18, 2020 at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 76 of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and peripheral arterial disease.[3][30][37] News of his death was first announced by his son Eric in a statement through Osmond’s representative.
