“We have no problem with the city spending on these types of events to encourage emerging talent and the genre, but there is a problem if you’re an established artist and need support from R3m. This is an established person that people already know, if we really want to develop new artists then why isn’t this money being spent at grassroots level,” Graham sa.
IFP Councilor Mdu Nkosi sa she supported the proposal because “IFP and culture cannot be separated”. He sa events with the likes of Cassper Nyovest and artists from abroad are always funded.
“People know that IFP and culture cannot be separated, we take Maskandi music seriously as it speaks to our people and they all love it,” he sa.
Nkosi sa the community has a lot to do to promote the maskandi music brand so that one day a talent like Khuzani could come from the eThekwini region.
“The city has money that they spend in these places, but we complain that they don’t support the artists that they produce. We have to see how they promote people. The truth is, people like Khuzani come from where they come from and they become big superstars.
We at eThekwini have promoted the genre enough, we need to see artists in the future that we will say have been proudly produced at eThekwini, we need to make sure we don’t lose talent to Johannesburg,” he sa.
