Michael Schjønberg

Michael Schjønberg Christensen (born January 19, 1967) is a Danish football manager, club official and former player. He currently oversees Faroese club 07 Vestur.

During his active career he played more than 100 games for the two German clubs Hannover 96 and 1. FC Kaiserslautern and won the 1991-92 DFB Cup with Hannover and the 1997-98 Bundesliga championship with Kaiserslautern. He also represented Danish clubs Esbjerg fB and OB. He played 44 games and scored three goals for the Danish national team and participated in the international tournaments King Fahd Cup 1995, Euro 1996, FIFA World Cup 1998 and Euro 2000.

After suffering an injury in 2001, he became a football coach in 2003. In 2004 he was first coach of the Danish club Herfølge BK alongside Allan Nielsen. He held several trainers and officials in his former German clubs and was interim coach of Hannover 96 in 2006.

Club career[ edit ]

Esbjerg-born Schjønberg began his career as an attacking midfielder for hometown club Esbjerg fB, making 103 first-team appearances in total. He and Esbjerg teammate Jesper Kristensen attended a training session with Esbjerg native Allan Nielsen at Nielsen’s German club FC Bayern Munich in the winter of 1989.

Hanover 96[ edit ]

When Bayern’s amateur coach Hans-Dieter Schmidt later became coach of German club Hannover 96, he remembered Schjønberg and offered him a contract.[3] In 1990, Schjønberg moved abroad to play for the second division club.

At Hannover, he was converted to a defensive player and finally entered as a left-back.[3] He won his first trophy as a senior when the club surprisingly defeated first division side Borussia Mönchengladbach and won the 1991/92 DFB-Pokal. The game ended in a penalty shoot-out, with Schjønberg scoring the decisive free-kick that gave Hannover 96 the win.[4] Unhappy with Hannover 96’s new contract offer, Schjønberg appeared ready to return to Denmark to play for OB in the summer of 1992. After the DFB Cup victory, he received an improved contract and became team captain. However, he had a hard time getting into the Danish national team. After 123 league games and 12 goals for Hannover 96, he looked around for a new club in the summer of 1994.

OB[edit]

Schjønberg joined OB in 1994 on a transfer deal worth DKK 700,000. The transfer came about as Schjønberg was more likely to secure a place in the Danish national team by playing for a Danish club.[5] He was called up to the national team in January 1995. With OB he reached the quarter-finals of the 1994/95 UEFA Cup. It was OB’s greatest European result as the club eliminated Spanish giants Real Madrid (against whom Schjønberg scored in the first leg)[6] before falling narrowly to Italian club AC Parma in the quarter-finals.

1 FC Kaiserslautern

After UEFA Euro 1996, he returned to Germany to play for 1. FC Kaiserslautern, second division club, in a transfer deal worth DEM 1.35 million.[7] In its first year with the club, 1. FC Kaiserslautern managed to get promoted to the Bundesliga. His success continued as the club remarkably won the title after returning to the top flight.

Schjønberg was an important part of this achievement. He scored the club’s first-ever goal of the 1997/98 season in the opening game against holders Bayern Munich. With ten minutes remaining, Schjønberg headed in a cross from Swiss midfielder Ciriaco Sforza to secure the 1-0 win. That victory was the beginning of Kaiserslautern’s fairy tale, and Schjønberg made 32 of 34 league appearances and scored four goals as the club became the first promoted team from Bundesliga 2 to win the Bundesliga title at their first attempt. Schjønberg returned to Kaiserslautern after the 1998 FIFA World Cup and was seriously injured early in the 1998–99 season. In September 1998, Schjønberg collided with VfL Bochum goalkeeper Thomas Ernst and broke his shin. He went through a seven-month rehabilitation period and returned in April 1999.

Schjønberg made a memorable appearance in the penultimate game of the 1999–2000 season. Goalkeeper Georg Koch was injured in the game against SC Freiburg and was replaced by reserve goalkeeper Uwe Gospodarek. Gospodarek had picked up an injury at half-time and with no goalkeeper left in the squad, Schjønberg took over the goalkeeper’s gloves. In the 59th minute Levan Kobiashvili scored against Schjønberg to give SC Freiburg a 2-1 lead, otherwise Schjønberg shot clean. He capped his performance with a saved penalty when he saved Alexander Iashvili’s shot in the 84th minute.[8]

In Kaiserslautern’s 2000/01 season he suffered another injury in the second game against VfL Wolfsburg. He returned in December of that year and eventually reclaimed his spot on the starting lineup. However, these injuries caught up with him and due to old injuries and acute knee problems he had to promptly end his football career after the 2000/01 season. During his time, he played 117 league games for 1. FC Kaiserslautern, scoring 13 goals.

International career[edit]

Schjønberg made his debut for the Danish national team in January 1995 in the King Fahd Cup 1995. He played all three of Denmark’s games in the tournament, which they eventually won. He was also selected for the 1996 European Championship, where he played in Denmark’s last two group games before elimination.

After that memorable domestic season, Schjønberg was selected to play for Denmark at the 1998 World Cup in France, where he played four of Denmark’s five matches before retiring. He started the tournament as Denmark’s left-back but lost the spot to Jan Heintze as the tournament progressed. He was called up to represent Denmark at Euro 2000 and played in Denmark’s three games before elimination. The last group game against the Czech Republic on 21 June 2000 would be Schjønberg’s last game for the national team.

Manager career[edit]

After ending his active football career, Schjønberg switched to coaching when he became youth coach at 1. FC Kaiserslautern in July 2003. In July 2004 he moved to Denmark, where he coached the Danish Superliga side Herfølge BK together with his good friend Allan Nielsen. Herfølge BK were relegated to the Danish 1. Liga, but Schjønberg kept his job. In November 2005 he became assistant coach of Hannover 96 by manager Peter Neururer. When Neururer was sacked in September 2006, Schjønberg represented a single DFB Cup match as head coach, in which Hannover 96 defeated Dynamo Dresden. When Hannover 96 signed Dieter Hecking as the new head coach, he brought in Dirk Bremser as his assistant and Schjønberg became coach of the club’s amateur team.

From April 4, 2007 to November 7, 2007 he was sporting director of 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

In the summer of 2008 he was appointed as the new sporting director at Danish club FC Vestsjælland and was appointed head coach of the club on 1 April 2009, Schjønberg replacing Jeppe Tengbjerg. He was released on June 29, 2011 for a poor finish to the 2010–11 season.

In January 2013 he was appointed first-team coach at Norwegian club Vålerenga Fotball.[9] Vålerengas manager Kjetil Rekdal knew Schjønberg from his time in Kaiserslautern, where he had worked under him.[10] In November 2014 he was appointed manager of Nest-Sotra Fotball in the Norwegian First Division.[11] He was released in May 2015.[12]

In the summer of 2016 he became the manager of FC Svendborg in the Danish second division.[13] However, due to financial problems, the club could not afford his salary and he left the club in December 2016.[14] In June 2018 he became the new manager of the lower division Aarup Boldklub.[15]

On December 16, 2020 he was appointed as the new manager of Vendsyssel FF in the Danish 1. Liga.[16] At the end of the season, with Vendsyssel narrowly avoiding relegation, Schjønberg decided to turn down Vendsyssel’s two-year contract extension for personal reasons and therefore left the club.[17]

On January 13, 2022, Schjønberg was appointed manager of Faroese club 07 Vestur.[18]
