Kurtis Walker, known professionally by his stage name Kurtis Blow, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record/film producer, b-boy, DJ, speaker, and minister. He is the first commercially successful rapper and the first to sign to a major record label.
As the first commercially successful rap artist, Kurtis Blow is a towering figure in hip-hop history. His popularity and charisma helped prove that rap music was more than a flash in the pan and paved the way for the even bigger advances of Grandmaster Flash and Run-D.M.C.
Blow was the first rapper to sign (and release an album) with a major label; the first with a single certified gold (1980s milestone “The Breaks”); the first to embark on a national (and international) concert tour; and the first to solify rap’s mainstream marketability by signing an endorsement deal.
Incentally, he really was the first major solo rapper on the record, and as such he was a natural reference point for many aspiring young MCs in the early days of hip-hop.
For all of his immense importance and influence, many of Blow’s records are not all that well dated; His rap technique, smooth for the time, just wasn’t as developed as that of the more advanced MCs who built on his and followed him up the charts.

As a result, Kurtis gave up the ghost of his recording career but found other ways to keep the old-school spirit alive. He contributed rap material to the TV soap opera One Life to Live in the early ’90s, and later hosted an old-school hip-hop show on Los Angeles radio station Power 106 for several years.
In 1997, Rhino Records capitalized on his status as hip-hop’s elder statesman by hiring him to produce, compile, and write synopsis for the three-volume series Kurtis Presents the History of Rap. In the same year he played a significant role in the rap documentary Rhyme and Reason.

As host and associate producer of Miramax’s Rhyme and Reason, he provided an informative account of the status of hip-hop while contributing to the three-volume 1998 record release The History of Rap for Rhino Records. Kurtis also co-produced “Slippin, Ten Years With The Bloods” and was recognized by Showtime as the most watched documentary of 2003. Kurtis was recently a producer on the Netflix show The Get Down.
Kurtis has spoken out strongly against racism. He was an active participant in the Artists United Against Apartheid album Sun City. He worked with Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Operation Push and National Rainbow Coalition in Chicago and with Rev. Al Sharpton’s Action Network in New York City. In 1995 he began working on the air at Radio Power 106, the #1 CHR radio station in Southern California. He hosted the Old School Show on Sunday night with hits from the past. He also worked for Sirius Satellite Radio on classic old school hip-hop station Backspin (channel 46) from 2000 to 2004.
Beginning in 1996, Kurtis Blow was featured in a hip hop show at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
