Sparks taught himself to play guitar when he was quite young. He was influenced by artists such as Wayne Raney, Stanley Brothers, Tommy Sutton and Paul “Moon” Mullins. Although he played in country and rock bands during his high school days, his bluegrass career began when he joined the Stanley Brothers in 1964.
At the time, Sparks was playing in a neighborhood band in Mdletown known as Ohio: “Irvin MackIntosh and His Band,” and a companion of his, banjo player Wilbur Hall, was familiar with Moon Mullins – who had only recently landed in Mdletown – and Hall enlightened Mullins about Larry. Mullins, who knew the Stanley Brothers, prescribed them Sparks and he was procured after a trial. An extensive visit ensued, and he recorded in 1965, without precedent for a small name, in Dayton, Ohio.
In late 1966, Carter Stanley of the Stanley Brothers died and Ralph Stanley needed a guitarist to replace Carter. “Ralph Stanley and His Clinch Mountain Boys” features Ralph Stanley – banjo, Larry Sparks – guitar, Curly Ray Cline – violin and Melvin Goins – bass. Sparkles moved to Clintwood, Virginia and was stopped. With Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks recorded the early forms of today’s twang-gauges, including “I Only Exist”, “Tenant Farmer’s Son” and “Going Up Home To Live in Green Pastures”.
In 1969 Sparks left the Clinch Mountain Boys, formed the Lonesome Ramblers and began recording for Pine Tree Records. The main line-up of the “Ramblers” consisted of Larry Sparks, Dav Cox, Lloyd Hensley, Joe Isaacs, and Larry’s sister, Bernice Sparks. After Pine Tree Records he went to Old Homestead Records and then to Starday Records before joining Rebel Records in 1977.

Sparks was born and raised in Lebanon, Ohio. His family was from Jackson County, Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountains. As a child, he listened to the Grand Ole Opry and WCKY radio station. He learned to play the guitar from a young age, influenced by artists such as Wayne Raney, Stanley Brothers, Tommy Sutton and Paul “Moon” Mullins. Although he played in country music and rock bands during his high school days, his bluegrass career took off when he joined the Stanley Brothers in 1964. At that time he was playing in a local band in Middletown, Ohio: “Irvin MackIntosh and His Band” and a friend of his, the banjo player Wilbur Hall, was acquainted with Moon Mullins – who had just arrived in Middletown – and Hall told Mullins about Sparks Mullins, who knew the Stanley Brothers, recommended Sparks and he was hired after an audition, followed by extensive touring and recording for the first time in 1965 for a small label in Dayton, Ohio.
In December 1966, Carter Stanley of the Stanley Brothers died and Ralph Stanley needed a guitarist to replace Carter. “Ralph Stanley and His Clinch Mountain Boys” featured Ralph Stanley banjo, Larry Sparks guitar, Curly Ray Cline fiddle and Melvin Goins bass. Sparks moved to Clintwood, Virginia and married. With Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks recorded the original versions of modern bluegrass standards, including “I Only Exist”, “Sharecropper’s Son” and “Going Up Home To Live in Green Pastures”. In late 1969 he left the Clinch Mountain Boys, formed the Lonesome Ramblers and began recording for Pine Tree Records. Larry Eugene Sparks was born on September 25, 1947 in Lebanon, Ohio. He started getting interested in music at the age of five when his older sister Bernice started teaching him some things on the guitar. Recordings by older siblings and his father’s clawhammer banjo playing further whet Larry’s musical appetite. Attending church as a child helped foster a love of singing and led to opportunities to have religious music performed on the radio.
Listening to the radio played a big part in Larry’s musical development. Wayne Raney at Cincinnati’s WCKY featured a variety of top bluegrass artists including the Stanley Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and Reno and Smiley. Other influential shows included the Grand Ole Opry and Nashville’s WLAC, which exposed Larry to a variety of blues artists whose influence can be heard particularly in his guitar style.
Around 1960, at the age of 13, Larry began playing locally with several regional groups. The experience of being in a band situation coupled with his own natural ability as a singer/guitarist prepared him for his first professional work. In late November 1964 he joined the Stanley Brothers, with whom he played lead guitar in a few trios and occasionally sang a baritone part. A tape from a Stanley Brothers performance at the University of Chicago Folk Festival in January 1965 shows Larry deftly handling the lead guitar on “When You and I Were Young, Maggie.”
Larry’s stint with the Stanley Brothers was short-lived, but it set the stage for his next professional work. When Carter Stanley died on December 1, 1966, Larry literally had very big footsteps to take his place with the Clinch Mountain Boys. Until he was outfitted with his own gear, he wore Carter’s shoes and played his 1954 Martin D-28 guitar.
For the next two years, Larry served as lead singer and lead guitarist in Ralph Stanley’s Clinch Mountain Boys. He helped Ralph record five albums, including two for Dayton, Ohio-based label Jalyn and three for King Records: Brand New Country Songs, Over the Sunset Hill and The Hills of Home. Larry’s tenure with Ralph ended in late 1969 when he left to pursue his own solo career.
While he had previously released a few 45 rpm singles, an album for the Pine Tree label called Ramblin’ Guitar essentially launched Larry’s solo career. New Gospel Songs, Pickin’ and Singin’ on Pine Tree and Ramblin’ Bluegrass followed for Starday Records.
Naturally, there were several references to Carter and Ralph Stanley in terms of material on the albums, but equally important was the inclusion of a number of songs with Larry’s name as author or co-author, including “These Old Blues”. As I Tried, King Jesus, Memories and Dreams, and Too Much Mountain Dew. Contributing to the success of many of these early recordings were two band members who helped define the sound of the early Lonesome Ramblers: mandolin player Wendy Miller and banjoist Mike Lilly.
The momentum continued to build with Larry’s 1972 album Bluegrass Old and New on Old Homestead. It was a collection he felt like he was finally “digging into”. In 1974, Larry formed a new label, King Bluegrass, and another new album, Footsteps of Tradition. He continued to expand his repertoire and hone his style—an artful blend of soulful vocals and bluesy guitar work—and found that “everything was solid” on this album. Later King Bluegrass releases included Sparklin’ Bluegrass (1975), You Could Have Called and Christmas in the Hills (both 1976).
The album You Could Have Called charted a new course for Larry. By this time he had added Tom Boyd to the Lonesome Ramblers, a versatile musician who doubled banjo and dobro. Added to the mix on the album is rising prodigy Ricky Skaggs’ mandolin, fiddle and harmony vocal work. The new and guest artists, along with an eclectic selection of top-notch material, created a slightly more refined sound for Larry.
Two groundbreaking recordings followed shortly after You Could Have Called. The first was a concept album for the County label that paid homage to the music of Hank Williams. Pairing Williams’ songs with Sparks’ voice was a natural fit, given an extra boost by veteran violinist Chubby Wise. The other release was Larry’s first for the rebel label John Deere Tractor. Featuring a crack edition of the Lonesome Ramblers, including violinists Kirk Brandenberger and Tom Boyd, the album added more songs to Larry’s core repertoire than any other project. With a string of successful record releases and growing popularity as a bluegrass festival headliner, Larry has been able to sustain stellar outputs from The Lonesome Ramblers. Notable members included banjoists Joe Isaacs, Dave Evans, Scott Vestal, Barry Crabtree, and Josh McMurray; mandolin players David Harvey and Scott Napier; violinists Joe Meadows, Kirk Brandenberger and Stuart Duncan; and his own son “Dee” Sparks on bass.
Since the early 1980s, most of Larry’s recorded output has appeared on Rebel Records. For this label he has released fifteen newly recorded projects and half a dozen compilation albums and CDs. Highlights included The Testing Times, Silver Reflections, a star-studded anniversary collection called 40 and most recently Lonesome and Then Some: A Classic 50th Celebration. Two other high profile releases have appeared on Rounder (Almost Home) and McCoury Music (The Last Suit You Wear).
A key component of Larry’s success from the beginning and to this day has been his commanding stage presence. In contrast to his quiet and reserved personality backstage, he exudes personality when performing. He doesn’t just sing and play guitar, he oozes soulful vocals punctuated by perfectly accented bluesy guitar notes, with a variety of circular body movements thrown in for good effect. Larry immersed himself in every song from head to toe. With a thick mop of now slightly gray hair that includes a very prominent spiked hairline, he is affectionately referred to as “Count Sparkula” by some of his fans!
Gospel music has always been an important part of Larry Sparks’ repertoire. Some of his first and many subsequent albums consisted entirely of gospel material. Many of his secular bluegrass albums contain at least one or two gospel tracks. In the early 1990’s Larry brought new credence to his performances of this material as he dedicated his life to Jesus Christ. Since that time, his personal appearances have often testified to the positive impact that decision had on his life. In addition to an active tour of the United States, Larry has also taken his music to Canada and Japan. Career highlights include appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, Austin City Limits, other PBS programs and of course his induction into the International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of Fame in 2015.
