Early life and education[edit]

Desjardins was born in Hawaii but grew up in Annandale, Virginia.[5] Her father was a naval officer who retired with the rank of captain and later worked as a university lecturer. She has three siblings and seven paternal half-siblings.[6][7] Already in her childhood she was interested in politics.[5]

Desjardins studied at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, between 1990 and 1994 and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics.[8] She then went to Russia for two years to study at Herzen University in Saint Petersburg, where she studied Russian Studies and learned Russian.[8] From 1996 she attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. The following year she received a Master of Science degree in journalism from that university.[9]

Career [edit]

Desjardin’s first job in journalism was at local television station WBTW in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, between 1998 and 1999, when she was fired. She then worked as a freelance reporter for The Sun News, a Myrtle Beach newspaper, and at the same time as a freelance reporter for Reuters news agency. After a few months, in October 1999, she left The Sun News and joined Columbia NBC affiliate WIS as a political reporter, while remaining a reporter for Reuters.[10] At WIS, she covered the South Carolina Legislature, the Confederate flag display debate in the South Carolina State House, and the 2000 Republican primary.[8] In 2003, Desjardins became a reporter at the Associated Press bureau in Washington, D.C., where she covered, among other things, the 2004 presidential election; Medicaid; hurricanes; and the Iraq war.[8]

CNN received a Peabody Award for reporting on the team in 2008.[4][13] While at CNN, she and Rick Emerson wrote a book on personal finance called Zombie Economics: A Guide to Personal Finance. It was published by Avery Publishing in May 2011.[9][14] Desjardins chaired the annual dinner of the Radio and TV Correspondents Association in June 2014.[15] She left CNN after being fired in August 2014.[16][17]

She also writes articles for the NewsHour website.[4] Her current title on the NewsHour is Capitol Hill Correspondent.[18]

Desjardins was at the US Capitol reporting on the 2020 Presidential Electoral College vote count and certification on January 6, 2021 when the building was attacked by violent mobs. Despite being attacked by a rioter,[19] she reported live throughout the attack and was evacuated to the Longworth House Office Building along with members of Congress and staff. Later that evening, Desjardins returned to report on the delayed certification process and stayed at the Capitol until 3:45 the next morning. In 2022, PBS NewsHour received a Peabody Award for its January 6 coverage, with Desjardins being the only reporter to broadcast live from the Capitol outside of the cordoned-off area.[22][23]
