Joel Osteen

American televangelist and author (b. 1963)

Joel Scott Osteen (born March 5, 1963)[2] is an American pastor, televangelist, and author based in Houston, Texas. Known for his weekly television services and several bestsellers, Osteen is one of the more prominent figures associated with prosperity theology.

Early life and family[edit]

Born in Houston, Texas, Osteen is one of six children born to John Osteen and Dolores (“Dodie”) Pilgrim. His father, a former Southern Baptist pastor, founded Lakewood Church (of which Osteen is the current senior pastor) behind an old feed store.[3] He graduated from Humble High School, a public high school in Humble, Texas, in 1981 and attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he majored in radio and television communications but did not graduate. he did not graduate from a Divinity School.[5][6] In 1982 he returned to Houston, founded Lakewood’s television program and produced his father’s televised sermons for 17 years until January 1999, when his father died unexpectedly of a heart attack.

Career [edit]

On January 17, 1999, Osteen preached his first sermon. On October 3, 1999, he was set apart as the new senior pastor of Lakewood Church.[8] In 2003, Lakewood Church acquired and renovated the Compaq Center, the former home of the NBA Houston Rockets and the AHL Houston Eros. According to Osteen, as of 2008, Lakewood Church’s weekly television program was viewed in more than 100 countries.[11] The Lakewood Church estimates that 7 million viewers watch the services each week.[12] [Circular]

Osteen was included in Barbara Walters’ list of 10 Most Fascinating People in 2006.[13][14] Former presidential candidate John McCain described Osteen as his favorite inspirational author.[15] The Osteen family attended the 2010 Easter breakfast hosted by President Barack Obama at the White House.[16]

By 2014, Lakewood’s attendance had increased from 5,000 to 43,000 people.[17]

Sermon style[edit]

Osteen’s sermon preparation involved memorizing his remarks and listening to himself on tape.[18] Osteen says he chose to focus more on the goodness of God and living an obedient life than on sin.[19] He says he tries to teach biblical principles in a simple way, emphasizing the power of love and a positive attitude.[20] When asked why he doesn’t focus more on sin, the devil, and hell in more detail, Osteen said in an interview with CBN News:

Growing up, the devil was a reason I had a headache, or the devil was a reason I got angry today. We’ve always blamed the devil. I think when I say the enemy today, I like to broaden it. Sometimes our own thoughts can be the enemy. We trained wrong. Or the enemy can be our own lack of discipline. Some people preach about hell as if you’re already going there, and to me the gospel means “good news.” I would rather say God is a God of mercy. So I think people already know what they’re doing wrong and I definitely believe in Hell. But when I see thousands of people in front of me, it just doesn’t occur to me to say, “You’re terrible and you’re going to hell.” I would rather say that God is a God of mercy. You must live an obedient life, but for every mistake you make there is grace and I believe we can do better.[7]

Events [ edit ]

Since 2004, Osteen, along with his wife, have hosted Night of Hope events as well as their annual stadium event called “America’s Night of Hope” across the United States and around the world. The event features contemporary Christian music and inspirational messages to reach the crowds at the venue and other online viewers.[24] Osteen also hosted an event called Kanye’s Sunday Service at his Lakewood Church in 2018 in partnership with rapper Kanye West. According to media reports, the event was attended by 17,000 people and was attended by many people streaming online.[25] He also held his Easter service during COVID-19 with Mariah Carey and Tyler Perry.[26]

books [edit]

Osteen’s first book, Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential, was published in October 2004 and reached #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list.[27]

In October 2007 he published his second book, Become a Better You: 7 Keys to Improve Your Life Every Day. It also topped the New York Times bestseller list[28] and had a first printing of three million copies ] Osteen has said that the book focuses more on relationships and doesn’t stick to where we are in life.[30]

In addition to these two books, Osteen has written more than 18 others. See book list.

Personal life[edit]

On April 4, 1987, Osteen married Victoria Osteen (née Iloff), who later became associate pastor of Lakewood Church.[2] They have a son and a daughter.[31] Also in 2002 were his older siblings, Paul, Lisa, and Tamara, and his younger sister, April, in the full-time ministry, and his half-brother, Justin, in missionary work.[8]

Osteen lives with his family in a 17,000 square foot mansion in River Oaks that is estimated to be worth $10.5 million.[32] Osteen says that as the senior pastor, he does not receive a salary from the church, which has an annual budget of $70 million,[33] and instead relies on proceeds from book sales.[34]

Political and social views[edit]

Osteen has generally avoided discussing or preaching on controversial issues such as gay marriage, abortion, and politics.[13][35] After publicly saying that homosexuality is “not God’s best,”[36] he has stated that he believes the church tends to overly focus on single issues (like homosexuality) to the point of neglecting others.[ 13][37] When asked if he believed that God approves of homosexuality, Osteen said that according to his interpretation of Scripture, homosexuality is a sin, but that gay people are welcome in his church without judgement.[38][39] [37][40]

In an interview on Fox News in 2008 during the Republican Party’s presidential election, when discussing whether he thought Mormons were Christians, Osteen indicated that he believed they were. He further admitted that he had not studied religion.[41] In a 2011 interview, Osteen stated his support for Israel.[42]

controversy[edit]

Prosperity Gospel[edit]

Osteen’s sermons and writings are sometimes criticized for promoting prosperity theology or the prosperity gospel, a belief that the reward for material gain is the will of God for all devout Christians.[35][41][43][44][45 ] [46]

On October 14, 2007, 60 Minutes ran a 12-minute segment about Osteen entitled “Joel Osteen Answers His Critics”, in which Reformed theologian Michael Horton told CBS News correspondent Byron Pitts that Osteen’s message was heresy. Horton explained that the problem with Osteen’s message is that it makes religion about us instead of about God.[47]

Osteen is estimated to have a net worth in excess of $50 million, with his church taking in $43 million annually in collections.[48]

Hurricane Harvey Answer[ edit ]

In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in August 2017, Osteen was heavily criticized for not providing Lakewood Church, a 606,000-square-foot, 16,000-seat former sports arena, as emergency shelter for those displaced by the storm.[49] [50][51][52][53] On August 27, church posts and the social media accounts of an associate pastor of Lakewood Church indicated that the church was “inaccessible due to severe flooding” and associate pastor John Gray continued: “If we could get there, we would open the doors. “[54][55] Lakewood spokesman Don Iloff later described floodwaters as being within a foot of pouring over the facility’s water gate and entering the building.[56] He also explained that pictures showing Lakewood free of flooding were taken Monday after the flood waters had subsided.[57][58]

Osteen denied the claim that flood waters closed the church, saying, “The church has been open from the start” and “[w]he’s always been open … How this notion came about that we’re not shelters and we don’t take people.” up is a false narrative.”[53][59] This contradicted his earlier statement that the church would open when other refugee centers were full.[53][60] On the evening of August 28, Lakewood announced that it would open at noon the next day as an available shelter for storm victims and rescue workers, which it did.[53]

On August 15, 2018, less than a year after Harvey struck, the city of Houston and Mayor Sylvester Turner proclaimed a day honoring Lakewood and Osteen’s support in the rebuilding efforts across the Houston area. It said Lakewood and his pastors had “assisted more than 1,150 Houston-area families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by flood waters” and purchased “$1.1 million in building materials, furniture, equipment, and paid labor, as well as through the contribution of more than 2,500 volunteers”.[63]

Other [edit]

In 2011, Osteen and Lakewood Church were sued by the band The American Dollar for copyright infringement.[64] A judge ruled in Osteen’s favor in 2012, but gave The American Dollar permission to change the case.[65]
