‘Kimmel’ Writer Louis Virtel Wonders What’s Next for Bisexual Robin (Video)

The big comic news this week is that Batman’s sidekick Tim Drake — the current Robin, in case you’re not familiar with Bat-Pals’ incredibly convoluted lore — is bisexual. And on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Thursday, showwriter Louis Virtel shared his thoughts on this big announcement, the history of queer comic book characters and the sexual orientation of a classic bat villain.

If you want to know more, you can start by reading a breakdown here. Now back to Louis Virtel, also known as a comedian and former Jeopardy! Candidate. He spoke about it in a segment titled “Virtel It Like It Is” during guest host Sarah Silverman’s monologue.

“Robin: Bisexual. If this has shaken you to the core, I don’t know what to tell you. You’re like one of those housewives in the ’50s who saw Liberace and thought, ‘He’s got a cape, a feathered headdress, and once he has a Christian wife, he’s going to have everything!'” Virtel began.

“It always led to that. Since the ’60s, Robin hasn’t had a big personality other than tight clothes and shaving his thighs, and honestly, I feel seen. That was Dick Grayson’s Robin. Here’s a picture of Robin in his current incarnation, Tim Drake,” he continued. “Remember when superheroes looked like gods to us? Now they look like some peloton instructor named Shane.”

“OK, there aren’t many gay superheroes, but a lot of superheroes are gay icons. Like Aquaman. You can’t tell in this photo, but he’s helping thousands of gay tweens through puberty right now,” Virtel joked.

Virtel then listed several gay superheroes before adding: “My favorite queer superhero is Cobweb from the ‘Tomorrow Stories’ series. Here, her only superpowers — not making it up — are 1) attraction and 2) making an entrance. Neither are superpowers. That’s just Beyoncé at the Soul Train Awards. And there should be comics about that!”

“Honestly, I’m glad Batman accepted Robin like that,” Virtel said as he pulled the piece down. “He watched his parents get murdered while holding theater tickets. That sounds like the origin story of the world’s gayest supervillain.”

“But Robin’s out and now there’s a chance we’ll get some interesting gay storylines from one of the greatest comic book characters of all time: will he date a lot of guys? Get caught by the penguin on Grindr? Make the mistake of spending $500 to see Madonna in concert when she never performs “Lucky Star” again? Only time will tell, but Robin, welcome to the herd,” Vitel said.

“And Riddler, baby, if you want to talk, I’m here.”

Watch the full monologue above. Virtel’s bit begins about five minutes later.

Culture vulture Louis Virtel is here to show that pride means having a good time, whether it’s about the entertainment industry, the occasional Jimmy Kimmel Live! (where he works as a writer) or quarrels about his favorite Madonna.

With Ira Madison III, Virtel hosts the weekly Keep It podcast on Crooked Media with guests ranging from comedians, journalists and actors to musicians, activists, politicians and more. They discuss how contemporary entertainment intersects with politics and society. “It’s in my blood to constantly read gay news and consume gay pop culture,” he says.

“I think it’s definitely important to have a gay presence on a late-night talk show in a writer’s room because, for one thing, we’re always on the news.”

What is particularly important to Virtel is being a queer person who elevates other underrepresented queer voices. “I think most of the time when people are looking for an authority on queer issues, they end up with someone who looks like me: a white gay guy who’s super talkative. But there are still many voices in all media, cinema, television, books, whatever, where they are left or misunderstood. And I think it is our common task to understand each other.”

Comedian and television personality Louis Virtel was first recognized as a contestant on the game show Jeopardy! known. Virtel gained an army of fans after throwing a cheeky retro-cool snap after correctly answering a daily double, and the clip soon went viral, amassing more than 3 million YouTube views. Since his rise to fame he has appeared as a pundit on The Bio Channel, CNN and HLN and more recently Chelsea. He is also the co-host of the Keep It! podcast.

Virtel grew up in Lemont, Illinois and was a big fan of game shows from an early age. Feeling like the only gay person in Illinois aside from his neighbor, he moved to Iowa to study journalism, got an internship at The Advocate, and eventually found his calling and audience in Iowa City.

After graduating, Virtel moved to L.A., where he wrote for Movieline and began performing stand-up comedy on the side. Although he never took his comedy seriously at first, others soon took notice and his YouTube series Verbal Vogueing – featuring his famous snap while exploring pop culture and everyday issues – became an online hit. The popular series also landed Virtel a stint as a writer for After Elton (MTV’s gay blog), followed by his own show The Snap for entertainment news website HitFix.

Virtel says he wants “to let people know that being gay exists and that it’s okay,” and as his career continues to soar, his ambition to become the “Madonna of Comedy” is becoming a reality.
